Hi Martin

Yes, cups needs to be installed to the root of a drive - not necessarily C:

You may find this helpful http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,631.0.html

Hi Per

Have you checked out the SQLite Manager available as a Firefox/Seamonkey extension? - see https://code.google.com/p/sqlite-manager/

Hi Leo

Your link points to my comment that cups cannot "autodetect" my network printer which is the case here.

If that is all the problem is then you could follow my tip for creating a cups printer profile manually which can then be fully configured using the cups browser interface:-

If CUPS does not see your printer then you need to use the Command line to create a basic printer that can be modified using the browser interface.

Open a command line window in \cups\sbin and enter the following command for a network printer:-

   lpadmin -p YourPrinterName -E -v PrinterIP/Port or Queue Name
          eg:-
      lpadmin -p RX585 -E -v socket://192.168.1.251/IP_192.168.1.251
                 or
      lpadmin -p RX585 -E -v lpd://192.168.1.251/lpt1

Hi

@Dave

RPM/YUM free zone  :-)

xf86sup.sys? - I guess it should have an entry in the config.sys file but it looks like the install did not add the line. I added it and rebooted.

Having realised that another part of the problem is a missing x11 server I installed hoblink x11.

I can now start gimp and xsane.

Sadly it seems it was all a waste of time as there does not seem to be any way to tell xsane which scanner to use; it seems to rely on discovering devices itself and, sadly, it fails.

Back to using scanimage - and having to "reboot" the Canon MG7550 after every scan  :-(

@Greggory

Thanks for your link http://os2notes.net/old/os2gimp2.html

The settings shown for hoblink/2 conflict with others I have seen but yours work  :-)

Hi All

I am trying to get xsane working on eCS2.1

I have installed xsane-0.992-OS2.zip plus the required support packages

 xfree86-4_5_0-runtime.wpi runtime package
 gimp-2_2_8-install.wpi, gimp-2_2_8-required-libs.wpi and gimp-2_0_7-help.wpi gimp packages
 gcc321m.zip
 libsane.dll

All the above are installed to drive K: which is set as UNIXROOT with gcc321m.dll and libsane.dll being placed in K:\usr\X11R6\lib

Installation seemed to go fine so I clicked on the gimp program icon to give it a try - there are no config.sys changes so a reboot is not necessary.

The gimp icon becomes hatched, nothing happens, the icon becomes unhatched - obviously something is not working...

I tried starting gimp from the command line. This involved opening a command window in drive K:\ and running K:\x11env.cmd followed by CD'ding to \usr\bin and entering gimp-2.2.exe

This resulted in the following messages hopefully explaining what went wrong:-

[K:\usr\bin]gimp-2.2.exe

(gimp-2.2.exe:96): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(gimp-2.2.exe:96): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers
GIMP could not initialise the graphical user interface.
Make sure a proper setup for your display environment exists.

[K:\usr\bin]

I guess something is not right in the x11env.cmd created during gimp install.
Any ideas on what needs changing will be appreciated:-

@ECHO OFF
SET X11ROOT=k:
SET BEGINLIBPATH=%X11ROOT%\usr\lib;%X11ROOT%\usr\X11R6\lib;
SET PATH=%X11ROOT%\usr\bin;%X11ROOT%\usr\X11R6\bin;%PATH%
SET MANPATH=%X11ROOT%\usr\man;%X11ROOT%\usr\X11R6\man;%MANPATH%
SET LOGNAME=%USER%
SET DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
SET G_FILENAME_ENCODING=CP850
IF $%1$==$$ GOTO DONE
%1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
EXIT
:DONE

Looking at the above I guess the questions are:-

1] How do I set a locale supported by Xlib

2] How do I create a "proper setup for your display environment"

Any help gratefully received  :-)

Hi Leo

In my experience cups works fine with print servers - even wireless print servers - whatever makes you think it does not?

I have no experience of using laserjet.drv so no idea what the problem is.

If your laser printers are postscript capable maybe you could try switching to using the pscript.drv.

Hi Ian

Earlier releases of OpenOffice(pre 4) would not work with innotek_ft2lib_260_beta1.exe and required the 2.40 release. I seem to recall that innotek_ft2lib_260_beta1.exe caused problems with Desktop icons as well - some of the eCS desktop background images containing multiple images at different resolutions could not be displayed.

Other than that innotek_ft2lib_260_beta1.exe worked fine here for a while.

I'm not sure if AOO4 requires the Innotek font engine at all but if it does it will be the 2.40 release.

Hi Erich

Open the Properties notebook for the program that you want to use to open eg firefox-24.8.1.en-us.os2.beta_3-wpi.wpi (that would be either Warpin or WPIView I guess) and on the Association page enter details that you want supported eg for the above *.*.*.*.*.*.WPI

General Discussion / Re: Problem on the PDF creation
« on: February 19, 2015, 10:46:51 pm »
Hi Mick Head

I think to test psprint.drv I would:-

1] Follow the steps in the psprint readme file in order to add the printer PPD file to the psprint.drv

2] Create a new OS/2 printer object, name the printer, select to install a new driver, enter the path to the psprint.drv file and click Refresh, select the printer from the displayed list.

3] Open the Properties of the new OS/2 printer and setup output port and Default job properties.

4] Try to print the document that fails to print with the other printer.

If the above fails with the same error I think I would then contact the author of psprint.drv, Alex Taylor, and ask  if there was any chance he could look into the problem.

Hi Mick Head

I suspect the problem is in this line of your log:-

    Error: /undefined in SavedState2

I was seeing a similar problem causing cups2 to fail to print jobs passed from my OS/2 printer.

It seems the postscript driver that I was using - ecups.drv - was the cause of the problem and switching to using the psprint.drv  - http://www.altsan.org/os2/printing/index.html#psprint - resolved that problem.
I can only suggest you give it a try and see if it helps.

Hi Alex

On testing psprint-30_905 I found RGB Color setting prints in Color, Greyscale setting prints in Color, Pre-convert to greyscale prints Greyscale.

Looks like psprint-30_905 resolves the problem here.

Hi ivan

Sorry, hope a HP user jumps in here because I have no idea...

Just for fun I had a quick look here http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/color_laserjet/hp_color_laserjet_3500.html

I suspect you need hplip.

Hi ivan

Having just done a clean install of cups 2.0 on a laptop I printed a test page and then checked the error log.

Your error log snippet posted above shows

  Request file type is application/vnd.cups-banner.

That is wrong; it should show

  Request file type is application/vnd.cups-pdf-banner.

This suggests that you may have installed over an existing cups setup or that some files remained from the existing setup.

I suspect a clean install will resolve the problem - or give us something else to try to resolve  :-)

Hi ivan

A quick look shows this problem occurs several times:-

I would expect cups to be able to print it's own test page but obiously something is wrong. May be there is a missing filter in your cups setup?

Does the printer use the cups hplip package?
