Hi Tom

I guess the big give away would be the lack of getting wet  ;-)

Hardware / Re: laptop worck with ecs
« on: August 12, 2014, 03:06:43 am »
Hi Robert

I have both eCS 2.2 Beta 2 and Windows7 Ultimate installed and working fairly well on a Dell Latitude E5500 which is fairly recent, about 3 years old. Basic spec is: Intel Core2Duo T9600 cpu @2.80GHz, 2GbRAM, Intel GM45 graphics, 15.6" screen, 160GB hard drive

There are problems though:-

1] The touchpad does not work in eCS - nothing wrong with the hardware, it is simply that the eCS driver does not understand the not quite standard PS/2 attached touchpad. There is a chance this will get fixed in the near future.

Solution: use a USB mouse/trackball.

2]  The E5500 was supplied with a Dell 1510N Wireless card (same as Broadcom BCM43xx series) which I could not get working despite lots of help from people who know how to get these things working.

Solution: Swap out the Dell 1510N wireless card and insert an Intel 5100 a/b/g/n wireless card and install the correct drivers from 1 of the genmac packages - which driver you use will depend on the Device and Product IDs eg [8086:4232]

Hope the above is of help

Hardware / Re: Webcam Support for OS/2 and eCS!!
« on: August 10, 2014, 04:51:48 pm »
Hi Alex

From my eventually successful attempts to get an Acer webcam working with eCS a while back I suspect that Wim may be more interested in the contents of the .bin file that USBDock can create for your webcam.

Run USBDock with the /bin parameter (or use USBcfg 0.8.2 to run USBDock) and you will find files 17ef:4807.bin and 17ef:4807.log created in the USBDock directory - on eCS systems that is usually [BootDrive]:\ecs\system\USBDock

Hope you and Wim get this working  :-)

Setup & Installation / Re: Is eComStation DEAD?

Hi All

You can take a Ferrari's chassis, dash and seats, and stick them onto the innards of a Volvo... but what you end up with will not be a Ferrari. It might be a nice car, but neither Ferrari lovers nor Volvo lovers would likely be impressed.

Just to add a touch of humour to this discussion:

Sometime around 1980 a friend purchased a Reliant Robin - a fairly cheap lightweight 3 wheel car(?) with a fibreglass body; often the butt of British comedy - and we customised it somewhat by changing the radiator grille for a radiator grille that originated on a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

Rolls Royce sales agents would foam at the mouth if my friend drove across their car sales/service forecourt but Rolls Royce owners often behaved the same as the rest of humanity and were amused to see a "Roller" grille on a beat up old "plastic pig" (fairly common uk slang at the time for the Reliant 3 wheelers) and often asked how much work had been involved. No Roller owner was that interested in playing Swapsies though...

With regard to the rest of this discussion: I think I would be amused to see a good working clone of the WPS on linux
and interested in how it had been achieved. I doubt I would want to use it though as I am simply not that keen on linux and doubt that putting a WPS clone on linux will change my mind about linux - somewhat similar to Roller owners looking at a Roller grille on a Reliant 3 wheeler but not wanting to swap vehicles I guess  :-)

Hi Martin

You may want to have a look at BS_Info which displays a wealth of system information http://wdsibyl.org/en/Downloads/display/lid/89

Hi Andi

Where can I - and possibly others reading this discussion - download OO410?

It would be nice to see how it compares to OO4 which works reasonably well here but has some problems.

Hi Martin

You will probably find that UNICODE.SYS has a hard coded path for \LANGUAGE which will, of course, result in "file(s) not found" error messages.

Hi Ivan

Seems all the youtube clips I watch play fine with the current eCS Flash GA -  11.5.502...

Maybe I've just been lucky so far  :-)

Hi Ivan

No, just those two, though if I unimix -names list I get the attached list:

I did not know about the -names option for unimix; not sure how much use it is in comparison to :-

unimix -list > mixer.txt

which will show the names, control ids *and* the values in use.

Which of the currently available drivers are you actually using? - there is a bit of a choice on http://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/

What chipset/mixer is involved? - seems to me that some versions of uniaud work better than others with some hardware.

Hardware / Re: Testing GenMAC with Unsupported drivers

Hi Martin

Both my Acer Travelmate 5320 and Dell Latitude E5500 laptops came with Broadcom wireless nics.

I failed to get wireless working on either laptop until I threw away the Broadcom nics and installed equivalent Intel nics; for the Acer that was a 3945abg and for the Dell a 5100abgn.

I suspect you need a 5100abgn to replace your Broadcom nic  :-)

Hi All

No, neither of my laptops can use WPA2.

Attempting to use WPA2 results in an inability to connect.

Of course WPA2 AES works fine under Windows on both laptops.

Hi Paul

Untested build of wpa_supplicant 2.2 - http://smedley.id.au/tmp/wpa_supplicant-2.2-os2-20140618.zip

Does not seem to want to work here - xwlan gives a couple of unexplained beeps and cannot connect.
Reinstating the older 2.0 gets connectivity back.

Hi Martin

I just spotted a thread about WPA2 in the genmac mailing list see news.gmane.org thread WPA2-PSK

In the above thread Doug states "WPA2-PSK support seems to have problems. Try WPA-TKIP. You *may* be able to get WPA2-PSK to work with the updated supplicant and the updated XWLAN, but you should understand a bit about how it all works, if you want to try that. You will also need the new DHCP support."

I also seem to recall reading somewhere, possibly in the above newsgroup, that WPA2 may not work with all (genmac) drivers.

I cannot remember whether my laptops are using WPA2. I'll have to check that later and if WPA2 is not in use I'll give it a try and report back.

Hardware / Re: eCS on an eCS board based computer?
« on: May 30, 2014, 03:47:52 am »
Hi Andy

Well, I removed the Dell 1510N wireless nic from my Dell E5500 laptop and installed an Intel 5100abgn wireless nic.

Checked it worked fine with Windows7, shrank the Windows7 volume, installed eCS2.2 beta2, installed genmac and the Intel 5100 driver from GenMU_TEST-0-2-7.wpi

I now have a Dell E5500 with wireless connectivity - but, if speed 54Mbps is anything to go by, it is not using N when booted from eCS. Maybe I need to do some sort of tweaking somewhere?

Pete
