Hi

I know it's old, but I just wanted to run it to try it out. HotJava Browser 3.0 seemed to run time ago.

Today I'm trying to run it with OpenJDK 1.6, but I only get the splash logo.
I'm trying:  java -cp browser.jar sunw.hotjava.Main

Regards

Hi Martin,
this browser requires the old Java version 1.1. With that, it runs.

I've created a small startup script that should make the launch successful. In the startup script, the program path and possibly the installation path for Java 1.1 need to be adjusted.

The second script is also called from the program directory and creates a program icon for my script on the desktop.

Regards,
Peter

Hello.

FYI: I'm comparing the Java apps that runs in OS/2 from Hobbes Archive to the GFD repository. (http://cyberia.dnsalias.com/Gfd.App.Java.Htm).
I'm uploading somethings that I found missing on hobbes. If you find any other Java application that may be missing on hobbes just let me know.

- Colossus_2005-03-01.zip
- Cribbage_2-04.zip
- JavaSolitaire_1-3.zip

If you have any other Java app that runs, that can be uploaded to Hobbes, just let me know. (post it here or contact me)

Hello

Does anybody knows how to use an Apple I ?? just to see if this emulator works.

http://apple1.chez.com/Apple1project/Emulation/Pom1-0.70b-JAVA.tar.gz

It runs with "java -DECHO="N" -DROMFILE="6502.rom.bin" -cp Pom1.jar pom1.Exec"
, but I'm not sure if it works fine.

Try PRINT "HELLO" and PRINT 1+2. These would work on an APPLE II, not sure if the APPLE I had basic.
Hmm, see https://www.applefritter.com/replica/chapter5 seems originally it did not have it in ROM. And it booted into the monitor. Come to think of it, I believe the 1st APPLE II also booted into the monitor, which was quite capable and included a mini-assembler.
Edit: Fix typo

No, the Apple I had no builtin Basic. It came with Wozmon, where you can look at memory locations and change them.
So what you would do, like most computers of its time, e.g. Altair etc, is, poke your assembled program into memory by keyboard or serial connection, and then run it.

Seems the emulator is using the Replica 1 ROM which does have basic included.

You might actually be able to get ahold of Woz and see if he will respond. I don't know his email address though.

Hello

Last night I was using Gemini AI to produce a java launcher for some "old Web browser applet Java games" to run without the browser and directly from the java command.
I had success with this two little old games.
-- BattleShip2000_2000-07-12.zip
-- Breakout_2001-04-26.zip

I think this is a first time that a piece of code made by a AI worked for me. I included the launcher source code on the files.

Hello

Does anybody knows if WeirdX runs on OS/2 or how to use it ?

I run it here with "java -jar weirdx-1.0.32.jar" but it just gives me a white screen.

Only a white screen here too. Looking at the README.OS2, it looks pretty hit and miss and may need an older Java. Colour depth might matter too, with it wanting 64K colours.
Seems I might have had it running years back but not sure.

I run it here with "java -jar weirdx-1.0.32.jar" but it just gives me a white screen.

This behavior is actually quite normal for the program. Similar to HOBX11 or PMX, it simply provides an X server to display X11 software within the WPS. Essentially, there are two ways to fill the empty program window: you can either run XFree86 software locally on your PC or redirect the program output from a Linux system to be displayed on the WPS.

A key advantage is that WeirdX is 'EFI-safe,' meaning it runs on ArcaOS under EFI. In contrast, XFree86 and HOBX11 do not work on EFI-based systems. Correction: HOBX works

Despite what the readme suggests, it actually runs well on more recent Java versions, including those on ArcaOS. However, there is a catch: its capabilities are limited to the X11R6 standard. Consequently, it cannot handle the requirements of modern, up-to-date Linux systems, so you will have to test individual applications to see if they are compatible.

You can find further information and a screenshot on this archived page:https://web.archive.org/web/20120503060039/http://www.jcraft.com/weirdx/

There are three display modes available: InBrowser, Rootless, and RootlessWM (which can be configured in the 'props' file). RootlessWM is theoretically the most elegant option because it integrates the application window directly into the WPS. Unfortunately, this mode suffers from a significant bug that makes it almost unusable: all menu pop-ups appear behind the main window, making them very difficult to access. While there are workarounds, they aren't practical for daily use.

I have attached screenshots of both modes from an old virtual environment (eCS). In these examples, Firefox is being streamed from a Raspberry Pi 3 to the system.
