OK, so I fixed some logging code....

Firstly, there was a pretty major code re-structuring in relation to the sound code between 4.0 and 4.1. Some of the added api calls I simply stubbed as I didn't think they were important, some I implemented.

What I believe is happening is that whilst the HDA chipset is being recognised, I don't think the code to support the mixers is being loaded at all. I see no logging from (for example) patch_sigmatel.c

What I need to do is step through the code and determine where the hda_intel/hda_codec code is supposed to call the code for the mixer, then work out why it isn't being loaded. I suspect this will come back to some code I stubbed that needs to be at least partially implemented - I just don't want to waste time implementing the wrong code...

No timeframes on updates, I have a busy week coming up...

OK I think I figured out that I need to implement driver_register() that than stubbing it. I got what I think is enough implemented, and got it compiling, however, for my efforts I'm rewarded with a Trap.

I'll try debug that tomorrow.

Cheers,

Paul

Just updating things, with help from Steven Levine, I fixed the trap very quickly. I then found I had to implement some more stuff. I think I'm VERY close, but at this stage, still no working HDA.

I just need to find the last bit of missing glue - hopefully soon - as I've spent way too much time on this over the last couple of weeks...

Note: This build will NOT produce sound on HDA hardware....

However, I found some missing 'glue' and made progress. I still have some code wrapped around '#ifndef TARGET_OS2' statements to prevent traps....

What I'm interested in is whether the mixer is correctly detected or not - in particular for Sigurd as his hardware should now be supported.

I'll keep working on fixing the traps so we can actually get sound :)

AC97 hardware should continue to work....

No trap, no sound and no connect to PMmix.

Is the mixer displayed correctly by unimix -card ?

No trap, no sound and no connect to PMmix is the expected behaviour.

https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-4.14.202-20201101b.zip has some updates - still no mixer controls yet - calling the code to set them up hangs the system whilst processing uniaud32 (hence it's commented out right now)

However, 'copy alsahlp$ alsa.log' gives encouraging results that we're VERY close :)

Hi Paul

uniaud32-linux-4.14.202-20201101b.zip is not working for me on the Thinkpad L420. (Intel HDA 8086:1C20)
- No traps, no sound after reboot.

Version 2.02.06 / 6 May 2020 14:21:32 was working fine for me.

Regards

Thanks - that's good to know. I'll only tested here with virtualised sigmatel hardware. As I mentioned - the code to setup controls is currently commented out as it's causing a hang loading uniaud32.sys. I made progress last night understanding why that's occuring. Hopefully soon you'll have no traps AND sound.

The positive is that the ALSA core has detected the hardware and all the appropriate inputs/outputs - we just need to make them work ;)

OK I found where the code is hanging - I don't yet know why it's working, but am semi-confident if that issue is fixed, I'll have working sound again with a significantly updated core code.

(Not sure anyway is reading/cares about these updates, but just trying to keep people informed on the status of this work)

updates are great, they serve several purposes including:

1) lets us know something is happening.
2) lets us know there is a lot more to it then simply recompiling code (which some of us really appreciate!).
3) you put a lot of effort into something you don't need to, which once more many of us really appreciate, and I note your karma is high :).

Hi Paul,

I am very happy to see your progress and I could just repeat the words of Ianmanners, wich I can confirm in anyway!

To have sound on a Laptop with native ArcaOS/ OS/2 that was build in 2018 is great and with that you keep my motivation to still play around with OS/2 alive!!

All the best and thank you again!

Paul,
As this helps my favorite OS. I appreciate your efforts. And we all need a boost from time to time. I will continue to test.
