1. Video editing - Main Actor/2

I know there are more important issues regarding ecomstation and its future but.....I've been trying the old Main Actor/2 from1998 which was released for free use for some time ago. Though it is really old it has many functions that you find in modern videoediting software today, like the sequencer. Effects and transitions are fully enough for me. And it seems very fast compared to programs of today, when testing around. For example "Pinnacle" is very slow even with a dual core processor. Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere are more easy to work with.

Main Actor/2 has of course an ugly design compared to modern ones, but I don't mind. The real bad thing is old codecs and I'm jut wondering if it would be possible to make a program or some sort of "helper"-application that could install new codecs? If that was possible we should have a usable video editing software, which would be great. With todays videocams with harddrives the capturing process wont be a big problem.

i could not disagree more. lack of multimedia software is the end of the platform. i am using winxp thru vpc more and more because flash v9, etc .... oh forget it. i have repeated myself for 15 years. time to stop.

i have a sizable investment in os/2 that makes running os/2 in a virtual machine on mac osx or winvista worth it. it no longer matters that scitech or warpvsn or uniaudio is done. in the virtual scene an old video adapter, just perfect for an old piece of software, is supported. the issue now is do i chance another minority system ( mac osx) or do i get real and practical and use vista full time instead of letting it sit on myshelf.

with os/2 in the vm i won't have to purchase commodity office apps, i'll be able to buy the multimedia stuff. i want to run something like cubase. i have ceres sound studio but it needs a lot of work. sigh

Ok ok I see the point... but don't make this thread to yet another virtual machine thread please. Just thought that one maybe can take advantage of a quite good (if old) video editing software and modernize it. But I'm perhaps far out in the blue, maybe it is technically not worth it (or not possible) and then one have to give it up. There are also virtual dub and clones of it for linux that could be portable, but they don't have the sequencer that makes videos easier to work with.

I will give MainActor/2 a try.

Have you checked out the Uniaud/Warpvision thread? It mentions a 'subscription' idea that sounds like a good plan.

Perhaps one could start a bounty for Main Actor/2? Was the source code released?

Yes, I've read the thread and I also think the subscription idea is good, if there isn't too many projects financed that way. I don't think the sourcecode of Main Actor/2 is released.

Hi Melf,

I got MainActor/2 with my ELSA Winner 2000/Office. I never used it, as it was not easy to understand. I pretty much stay inside the realm of OS/2, so a lot of new stuff I really don't experience. I have to admit, that I do like the VideoIn that comes with OS/2. I've used it to render animations created with the DOS version of POV-Ray. Video-In will allow you to assemble a series of bitmaps. As long as you stay within the limits, it works great.

Well, if you get enough motivation, perhaps you may lean how to update MainActor/2 with new CODECs (COmpression DECompression). I try to putter with C and hope to become an asset to the OS/2 community as my skill grows. At least there are plenty of cheap OS/2 programming books in the used bookstores (and eBay) to keep me busy. Take care.

Hi Cyberspittle!

I've tried VideoIn before and for me it is to "raw". I'm very fond of timelines and as a matter of fact I guess it would be very easy to render animations in Main Actor. But you already have a working solution. Well, sometimes I wish I were a programmer, instead of a middleaged psychologist, so I could do something about things myself!

Hi Melf,

Well the internet may have a solution for you soon. Photobucket (I believe) has a beta program for their bonus members using Adobe web-based software. Once the beta is complete at the end of March, this service will be available for regular members.

I just checked ... it is Photobucket ...

Hang in there buddy!

I don't think it would be a problem updating the codecs in mainactor, the problem is weather or not the sdk is public or not. Even if it is not, it may be possible to reverse engineer. I doubt we could put a wrapper for OS/2 codecs since I believe there was a good reason for main actor not to use the OS/2 codecs originally.

to take this thread in a slightly diff. direction...could someone off a few suggestions about using OS/2 to get VHS footage into the digital realm? I'd like to get a TV appearance by my band into .avi or .mpg format. I assume a video card with an S-Video connection, and MainActor/2 would do the trick?? Any tips or guidance would be appreciated...

Hi

Not having any experience of this myself my suggestion would be a WinTV card with Video In capability supported by EmperoarTV, http://www.s-t.de/emperoar/ which lists on that page this capability:-

"Record from external analog video sources".

Hope that helps

Pete

anyone out there using OS/2 for this purpose (VHS video to digital video file format)? would be happy to get some input or details on on your experiences...
