I saw an ad on television for DirecWay two-way satelite internet access. The commercial indicated that there was no software to install. Would this mean one could use it with OS/2-eCS?

Hi, BigWarpGuy,

According to a system requirement test I ran on my computer
at www.getdway.com:

"To use DIRECWAY you will need to upgrade your computer's operating system to one of the following: Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium(Me), Windows 2000, or Windows XP.

Looks like another Windows-only organization.

I doubt an email would wake anyone up.

I heard that two satellite links are expensive. I probably could not afford it any. As they say 'a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, I have cable/broad band connection that works with eCS quite well (Comcast requires DHCP support and eCS has it). I have really fast downloads (100 to 200 mbps). I am a happy camper. It cost more than dialup but I think it and I are worth it.

Actually, I called them a number of months back and their tech support guy said it would work fine with Linux or Warp... you'd just need the appropriate DDNS/DHCP setup enabled via Warp, InJoy, etc...

Hmm. curious, but is it really two way communication via satelite? Here in Sweden we have the same solution for thoose living out of range for xDSL solution and other broadband, but then it's download via satelit and upload via modem (phone line)! So there will still be a high cost on the upload traffic.

There is 2-way high-speed internet via satilite from earthlink (among others). Previously, it was a phoneline (uplink) / satelite (downlink). To use it with OS/2, you'll need a Windows system as a "go-betwee", as it can not use a cable or DSL modem/router. If you don't mind your firewall (Windows PC) compromised, it might be a worthwhile solution with an old PC running the minimum required version of Windows. There is a delay as it goes through the atmosphere, so online gaming sucks (Windows, X-box, PS2, etc.). For downloads and other activities it is better than dialup (long distance toll charges, etc.).

Satellite systems use BST (boosted session transport) in order to cut down on the chattiness of TCP. The earlier (4000 series) 2-way Direcway setups use software running on a Win32 machine to strip the data packet from the TCP and repackage it in BST to send up over the sat link and vice-versa. In these configurations, given that the proprietary BST protocol was only implemented in a Win32 executable, it was a requirement to have a Win box proxy connections to the sat link. However, in recent months, with the advent of the 6000 series transceivers, all of this has become a thing of the past.

While the 4000 series units consisted of a separate transmitter and receiver pair, cabled together via a DB-25 connector on either end of a 1-foot jumper, a USB connection to the computer, and an RG-58 connection with screw-type F connector on it to connect from the transmitter to the LNB on the dish, the 6000 series is much more network friendly. Instead of two separate units, it consists of a single box which connects to the network either via USB or Ethernet, and it will happily connect directly to a standard ethernet port on a machine running *ANY* OS or to the WAN port of a broadband router.

So, the bottom line is that now, even without a Win box proxying the connection, true 2-way satellite connectivity is possible straight from a system running OS/2 or eCS.

The downside (because every silver lining has a cloud!) is that satellite broadband (and I use the term "broadband" very loosely) is an absolute last resort. It is expensive for the performance, it's performance varies widely from hour to hour, it is extremely sensitive to sunspot activity as well as inclement weather, and support from providers is absolutely terrible. In addition, it is important to remember that BST is only useful for http traffic, and does not apply to ftp, https, pop3, smtp, or any other standard internet protocol application.

I know all of this from personal experience; I have several clients - and my brother - running Direcway 2-way systems, and have also done a single Starband setup (a big mistake). All of these installations are in network configurations with a variety of operating systems.

I hope this info helps!

Hi,

I recently emailed DirectWay asking if it is possible to configure OS/2 Warp to
connect to the Internet through a DirecWay satellite system.

I also asked for them to send me some technical details or web links on using OS/2 Warp with their equipment?

Here is the full reply that I got:

"call tech support at 1-866-347-3292"

Best,

RadarCat

Hi there BWG,
I'm in the boondocks of Australia using two-way satellitesupplied by the Australian telco, Telstra. It is using Direcway technology and a satellite positioned over SE Asia ( Singapore).I have the older 4000 technologymentioned byothers
and Telstra would only link up to a newer Windows box. I'm not using thehardware router (Dircway 4020) on our home LAN( it's very expensive)but a software routerNAT32(www.nat32.com) on the WinXP gateway. eCS sees this software and the internet works excellently over the LAN.I am not using the slower Windows ICS. There are a few discussion groups for satellite broadband... helpful ones. Let me know if you need any specifics.

I live in an apartment complex. It was easier to get a cable modem that to try to get permission to install a satelite dish (I have to get the apartment managers permission to install a satelite dish where the cable system was alread installed in the apartment). Thank you for the information. It is appreciated.
