1. FTP Client suggestions for eComStation / OS/2

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations of good FTP Clients for OS/2? I had been using EmTec FTP 5.07, but it seems to stop transferring after a few files. I dont know if it is because I am using the unregistered version or because of a bug in the program. I had previously registered it (and lost the registration code) - and though I'd be willing to re-register it, I'd rather spend the money on a currently supported program.

I've also tried FireFTP but am running into two problems:
(1) it doesnt handle "non-standard" (A-Z, 0-9, - _ +, etc) ASCII characters (and stops transferring when it finds one - such as "ÿ" (should look like a y with two dots over it).
(2) it doesnt seem to finish the connection/dir stage when connecting through my ISP (CableVision) - while EmTec FTP does.

I've also tried FTPIFS but it doesnt seem to like Pete Moylan's FTPD. I would be very happy using FTPIFS if it was a configuration issue that I was overlooking, but I have tried every setting combination in FTPIFS I could think of.

Some background... I often transfer entire directory trees (which currently I have to do one directory at a time using the rather outdated, but still usable VxFTP).

Ideally, I'd love something that was REXX scriptable, but that isnt mandatory for my needs.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Robert

I'm glad you asked this question because I'm also on a similar hunt. I'm trying to find an FTP client that will work with a proxy server. The shareware NFTP has been suggested (and might even be useful to you) but I was not able to figure out how to do the proxy connection (in the 298.2 seconds I attempted it).

Neither could I...

...wookies are funny . But on a serious note, play around with NFTP: http://www.ayukov.com/nftp/index.html

It can be used to change file permissions as well as upload/download entire structure of websites (I did limited testing in the past, accordingly do your own evaluations). It requires the emx runtime.

Best of Luck !

For some reason I can't remember the name of it right now but there are two file commanders, one is java and the other is a native OS/2 app which can log into an ftp and transfer either direction from an ftp site. I use it alot on my OS/2 server to transfer dvd iso's since os/2 file sharing can't handle large files (now I use samba)

I don't know if you're into using Java, but you should take a good look at JFTP. You can find a link to it on the OS/2 World Java page (http://www.os2world.com/java/). I've used it before and it works very nicely. I've had problems with Emtec FTP before (and it was a "helped" version) and I don't recommend it.

I wish Filezilla was ported to OS/2. That's what I use on my Windows machines.

Hope this helps,
Sean

Hi folks,

I would also recommend to give a try to JFTP.
Unfortunately, it's a very ambiguous project/program name. The one I propose (like most others too I guess) is
http://www.jmethods.com/products/jftp/

It requires you to "register" for a free license, but that works pretty fast and easy and the program is cool. Don't know however if it is suitable for your special needs... just check it out.
What I like is that "OS/2" is stated on the download site as one of the platforms that it runs on. Nice, huh? Requires some guts to still mention OS/2 as a platform...

As for the file managers, I don't know the second one, but the first one that comes to mind surely is "F" which is available here:
http://filemanager.free.fr/

Additional info on F is available in the review by Christian Hennecke from the November 2004 edition of the VOICE newsletter:
http://www.os2voice.org/vnl/past_issues/VNL1104H/vnewsf2.htm

The second file manager with built-in FTP support *could* be the EF-Commander (native OS/2 GUI, shareware at 25 euro approx.):
http://www.efsoftware.com/cw/e.htm
(above link is for the english version of the site)

Cheers,
Thomas

Here is a REXX-FTP bookmark from a month ago => FTPBox/2 0.02 ...
http://www.os2world.com/cgi-bin/news/viewnews.cgi?category=32&id=1175912832

It would be interesting to see what you think if it works either as is, or with any extensible REXX scripting.

Here is another REXX-FTP that requires VX-Rexx, vxftp100.zip, which has an explaination available along with other FTP apps at...
http://www.os2world.com/freeos2/ftp.html#vxftp

Did you ever hear of a bookmark packrat? My eComStation bookmarks are now extensive enough to on occasion have some broken weblinks.

I too recommend Java based JFTP. One key reason I use this: it handles the AS/400 ~ iSeries Name Format. It is a bit slow and hungry for resources like OpenOffice, but does a good job. Worth the registration. The native OS/2 versions do not seem to handle the AS/400 ~ iSeries Name Format, otherwise I would prefer those.

Spent the other 7.8 seconds required and got it. It's not that hard. Just edit the nftp.ini. Works well.
