Hi all,Please can you help me to setup a home network. I've reinstalled OS/2 on 1 PC hoping to use the OS2MT utility to apply all fixes, patches etc on a freshly installed partition but must use file and print sharing to share internet connection on XP machine as I have an iBurst wireless connection to my ISP and there is no support for OS/2
Don't know much if anything at all about networking and been searching all over the 'net for help on explaining networking and protocols but can't seem to get to grips with it.
I've got as far as installing NIC ( a CNet ProG-200S using the RealTek 8169 chipset ) and installed drivers via MPTS- all seems good and can ping my own card but not XP machine. Tried playing around with settings in XP and used the Network Setup Wizard. XP machine has an onboard RTL8139 NIC. I've also disables/uninstalled all Anti virus software and Comodo firewall but to no avail. Friend came over with laptop and XP preinstalled... setting up network was a snap using the wizard. Damn Small Live edition seems to use the network for internet access in a snap too
Friend keeps chuckling at me telling me to just ditch OS/2 but damn him if I'm going to do that!! Shown him a few neat tricks like using shadows as shortcuts in XP, neat trick is that shortcuts don't update automatically- so move the original file and shortcut no longer works
and I can do just about anything in OS/2 that 1 can do in XP without the overhead- OS/2 still runs fine on P1 200 with 256MB RAM.
Ultimately, want to get home network going to access net through XP machine and dump a whole lotta files to XP machine for backup purposes as old machine doesn't support current DVD drives available nor the super large HDD. Could you also help in recommending any good books for reading up on networking and all the protocols used plus their meanings- all Greek to me.
Awaiting your favourable reply.
Many thanks,
