1. Lexar USB2.0 Jumpdrive 512MB works with USB2.0 ports but really slow with US1.1 ports

Hi,
I have a Lexar USB2.0 Jumpdrive 512MB that works at full speed on my desktop with USB2.0 ports but on my Thinkpad T30 it works really slow. For example doing a dir takes about 3 minutes to get back to the prompt!

In constrast, I have a Sandisk Cruzer 1GB USB2.0 that works fast on my T30. This did not start out this way: It also started out slow as molasses when I bought it like the Jumpdrive, but after I reformatted and used DFSEE to rewrite the MBR etc. then it became fast.

I tried the same trick with my Jumpdrive but just could not get its speed up.

Any suggestioins?

Your desktop vs. laptop experience makes me think it is a power problem.
I'm not an expert, but I was told that sometimes the USB ports on laptops don't supply sufficient power as they're supposed to. I can't imagine a USB flash drive using that much, but...

I have a 3 external USB 2.5" drive enclosures. 2 of them come with a USB "splitter" type cable that hooks up 2 USB ports on the laptop to one on the drive case, the manuals say it's for when the laptops don't supply enough power.

1 of them always works perfectly, even with only 1 USB port plugged into my laptop. The others experience the problems that you have described, taking FOREVER to "start" up. (e.g. when I boot off CD-ROM to backup with DFSee). It basically doesn't work. The one that works was a no-name $10 thing and the expensive, name-brand $40 piece actually doesn't work as well.

Also be a bit careful about USB designations. From what I understand, USB 2.0 is USB 2.0, but USB2 is actually USB1.1 because of some marketing monkey business, but it isn't all consistent.

Hi Isaac,
The power problem is a good guess BUT the jumpdrive works perfectly when I boot the TP30 to WinXP.

Does anyone have the Lexar Jumpdrive working at all?

Whatever it is, I think we have the same issue. I actually see very similar problem. When I first boot into WinXP, it actually won't won't see the drive. I have to boot first, then plug it in. That's how I actually use the "bad" USB enclosures. Since I don't care about WinXP partition, it can be "dirty" when I'm backing up.

Maybe there's something that turns on after the OS is loaded?
I'm hesitant to try with OS/2 because I do a backup by cloning the drive and all sorts of mayhem ensues when I plug in the USB drive to OS/2 with 2 identical sets of drives.

One thing I just read up on, there's the UHCI/OHCI and EHCI thing, the multiple "standards" on USB. Apparently UHCI is software driven, proposed by Intel, of course, since it requires more processor power. I'm guessing this probably means it does need a special driver to work in the proper mode. And of course, most of the laptops are using an Intel chipset.

I dunno...I'm just guessing...way out of my league here...

Though you've been pushed in a few different directions here I believe your problem is simply the USB 1.1 compatablity mode in the device itself. Not all USB 2.0 chipsets (device) work as well as others when used in less then optimal settings (USB 2.0 itself has 2 different speed modes) A device intended for the HiSpeed connection may work differently on a 1.1 system then one designed for FullSpeed. I can demonstrate this on my wifes computer since her motherboard has both. This is also an OS/2 only related issues since different drivers are going to work with the devices chipset in different ways (though, if USB was truely universal that wouldn't be the case).

I guess I'll chalk it up to Lexar's are incompatible with OS/2.

Just of out curiosity, does the FAT32 driver from netlabs work with the FAT16 formatted USB drive for long file names (LFN)? I read the readme and it said no, but then again, who really *reads* the readme .

Is the only solution to buy netdrive and VFAT driver?

I ran into a similar problem with an 256 MB "Impact" flash drive, which is made by Lexar and identifies itself as a Lexar Jumpdrive on my Compaq Armada laptop. It was really slow on OS/2, but worked fine in Windows 98.

For the longest time the only way to make it work was to use the CWUSB drivers but replace the cwusbd.sys with the USBD.SYS found in mmport at:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=mmport&pushbutton=Search

But, this way it was still very slow to access this drive.

Eventually I found that the latest IBM USB drivers (Version 10.162) fixed the problem. Since I installed these drivers, the speed on this flash drive is fine.

To find out what version you're running, type:

bldlevel c:\os2\boot\usbmsd.add

at a command prompt.

If you're running something earlier then 10.162 then this may be a problem. If you're running eCS, you can download the newer drivers from the ecomstation.com website. If you have IBM passport advantage, I'm not even sure where IBM is putting these updates these days.

Hope this helps.

FAT16 and FAT32 are two different beasts. The Netlabs FAT32 driver is for FAT32, and won't help you with FAT16.

I bought Netdrive and have been testing the VFAT plugin for quite some time (in read-only mode: not registered).

I am not quite happy with it: it halves the speed of my USB drives and sometimes it stops copying from the USB drive with an error and you can't restart until you unmount and remount the (virtual) drive.

I am using VFAT2EA with my 128Mb USB key. I have a new 2Gb USB key that I reformatted to FAT32 right after buying it, using the beta FAT32 driver that you can download from the files area of the FAT32User Yahoo group. Just don't use the CACHEF32 cache helper.

Originally I left the partition as was and reformatted to FAT32 with Win2K, but eCS didn't see it anymore. So I erased all partitions and recreated a new one (LVMized) with DFSee. Then formatted it to FAT32 under Win2K. Now it is working perfectly.

Side note: Netdrive is a valuable tool and is worth every single cent thanks to the other plugins. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the VFAT plugin.

HTH
Bye

Hi Cris,

I'll try out the FAT32 route and see how it goes. Thanks!
