Hi All,

Two questions:

(1) How do I reset my NetBIOS domain, username and password?

I set up this box a long time ago and dont remember them.

(2) Is there a way to configure it as a WinSlow XP Domain Controller? We are setting up numerous custom servers for clients and trying to do away with all their WinSlow 2003 Servers (they dont use MS Exchange or any other crap like that - they just use it for login rights and a few shared directories).

Thanks (as always) for any advice!!!

-Robert

Hi,

You don't say what version of software you are using. Is this WarpServer, or WSeB?

I can send you a utility to add a new administrator account to your system, if you require it. The 'Emergency Administrator Add' facility does not require you to log on in order to work, but just console access.

With regard to being a DC, I am not sure how well this would work. In theory it should be possible, however, I would recommend that you set up a test domain - and test it. In particular I would pay attention to:

1. All clients need to be 2000 SP4 or newer, or they will use up all WS resources.
2. Make sure that home drives work
3. Make sure logon scripts work
4. Make sure any server-based network printers work
5. Make sure that protocols are all NetBIOS over IP (NetBT) - pure NetBIOS dropped in later versions of Windows (not available as an add-on for Vista).
6. Make sure network time sychronisation works
7. Make sure that users can change their DC passwords
8. Make sure that the server log does not show any weird errors after a few days of use.

TBH, I am not sure if the risks outweigh any percieved advantages in using an OS/2 server. The only way that this really will work is using the IBM Network Client for XP - means installing a new client on all of your workstations. And there will never be a Vista version

Regards,
Moby.

Hi Moby,

If you could send that file, that would be great.

I am running WSeB v4.52 CP2 PF. All the machines are Win XP Pro SP2 but one - which is WinXP Home SP2.

Thanks for all your help,
Robert

I was using my wSeB machine as a DC for a 35 computer XP domain for a long time, with all functions working, network printing and all.. I had some modifications done to my config thought.. later I had to change everything around since I had a need to store 4gb+ files on my server.. still running OS/2 of course... ::sigh::

Hi Sebadoh,

Thanks for the reply... couple questions if ya dont mind...

(1) how powerful of a server was it?

(2) Are there any issues you can recall that I might run in to?

Thanks again,
Robert

Hi,

Please supply your e-mail address for me to send you the Emergency Administrator Add Facility.

I would strongly suggest that you test your use of the WS DC with XP first and make sure that all resource cleanups occur correctly and over a period of time.

I used to run WS OS/2 servers (incl. DCs) with 1100+ Windows PCs. There were, unfortunately, a large number of problems - but with a much smaller network I suspect most of these issues will disappear, as the issues were largely resource exhaustion on the servers (due to the way Windows interacts with session/file usage on OS/2 servers).

Regards,
Moby.
