Title: Papyrus 2008 (DEMO)
Post by: Saijin_Naib on 2008.08.08, 06:33:15
This is actually pretty darned nice. Throw in the OOXML and MSXML format support as well as an option to view the sheet as single and centered, and I'd rather my support agreement pay for this than OpenOffice.

Greetings, Saijin Naib.

Papyrus has had a love/hate relationship with the OS/2 community for a long time.

Once, Rom Logic actually supported OS/2. And now, every time a new version is in the works there is the usual chatter from past users and Rom Logic about whether or not there will be a new OS/2 version.

It always comes down to the developer saying that they will look into it, or will work on making one. However, it's been a looong time since there has been an OS/2 version of Papyrus, though it certainly is a wonderful word processor.

I believe there was such a discussion about a year and a half ago more or less, referencing this, now present, version.

For myself, I used Papyrus many years ago and loved it. Fast, small, powerful and stable somewhere between Describe and Lotus' Word Pro, ( Ami Pro then), and I would very much like to see a new, native version, but another weak port I can do without.

I've tried the Papyrus 2008 OS/2 version... didnt look into it to see if it is native or a port, but it is fast enough that I would suspect it is not a port. The only problems are there only seems to be a German version of it for OS/2, and no mention anywhere on the English site of an OS/2 version other than brief references to older versions which I could not locate.

So... the good news is, the OS/2 version is apparently already done. The bad news is, it's German only at the moment.

Worse news, they make you pay for updates (Grrr) and language switch pack :\

I wonder how hard it can be to make an English OS/2 version since they must all ready have most of core data done for the Windows and Mac versions.

Now, that is a bit of an assumption for I haven't had the time to check, but I find it hard to believe that all versions are in German.

Also, I'm not a programmer so...

However, I surely would be interested in seeing what they've done so far WRT the OS/2 version... maybe I'll download the German  one and check it out for myself if I can find the time.

Later...

Hey Ben,

What I was trying to say was I saw no OS/2 version in English  - just the German version. Unless the English version is available on the German "side" of the site for purchase (there is no English Demo on the German side for OS/2).

On the English side, there is no OS/2 version downloadable... but references to previous OS/2 versions (ie: text only, for instance (paraphrased) "older versions of Papyrus for OS/2 and Windows will even open files created with the new version of Papyrus"). But, I could not find any download links to older versions (OS/2 or otherwise) except the most recent set - all for non-OS/2 on the English side.

Check it out... or perhaps someone who knows German should, as maybe there is mention on the German site of "Papyrus 8 for OS/2 will soon be available in English as well" - or something similar.

Robert

Greetings, Robert M.

Yeah, I got all that from your first post, though that might not have come across in my response; I know there is no English version of OS/2.

Thanks for the additional info though.  ;)

And the problem with that is? They are a company, not charity. Bug fix releases are free, though.

I have a problem with a Language switch pack, the program should be available in major languages, or at least have the ability to change over without the customer having to pay. God forbid Microsoft did the same, you'd all be on here crying about it, but it's okay for this company?

Bullsh_t sir.

I have no problem with that... they probably have to pay people money to translate it... as long as it isnt exhorbitant, it doesnt bother me... and... they are a lot smaller than MS... little things like that can make or break a small company...

...dunno why I like ellipses so much today...

I have tried the german version of new Papyrus. It started only once, then I got GP faults (DOSCALL1, NULL pointer dereference) on every next start. Next possible start of Papyrus only after complete reinstalling. Is that intentional? If it is then I was correct when I throwed Papyrus into trash can.

I wasn't aware of that particular scenario. I agree that the GUI language shouldn't be handled that restrictively. I can, however, understand that they charge for the dictionaries as they will have to pay licenses for the data they create those from themselves.

Bullsh_t sir.

Insults don't support your point.

The dictionaries I can understand being a charge thing (maybe), but the interface should be a NLS one like is being pushed by Eugene and eCoSoftware. The eCS community is spread out all over the world and it'd be nice for everyone to have a NLS version of whatever program they need/want.

And that was not an insult, but merely an exclamation. An insult has to be meant for a person, and that clearly was not directed toward you (calling you bullsh_t), but rather saying it's bullsh_t for them to charge for the language switch pack.

Hmmm... I've loaded and ran it about 4 times... no problems either time. Do you have a non-standard DOSCALL1 installed? If not, maybe there is something different in your version than in mine. I ran Papyrus 2008 Demo on WSeB no fixpacks...

eCS 2.0 RC1 (because I cannot install eCS on my NB, I am upgrading in longer periods). No nonstandard DOSCALL1 unless eCS itself made it nonstandard.

Hello,

I tried Papyrus 2008 and can read the German text etc.
I noticed that it's lightning fast compared to OOo, seem quite straight forward and I felt "at home" right away though I only used it shortly. No crashes or anything like that. If they have created a product for OS/2 that is so complete as the one tested, there's no idea to throw it away. They should release a full blown version too, just hope they do.

OOo contain alot of features, but is to bulky and doesn't do things the OS/2-eCS way. Wish we could steal parts of it and create building blocks that we'd then create Office suites and other apps from.

If their development environment require them to code each language and bind to resource files, then I can understand why they want to charge extra, but they'll get alot more users if they can load languages dynamically and use the same file format (possibly encrypted).

I work for a company that almost charged extra for language packs, but as a new naive employee I accidentally asked why they didn't include as many as they could in the standard product and use that as a selling argument. They looked at me as I was some kind of Alien... but apparently took a decision (without involving me) to follow my word and allow as many languages as possible. The approach is a bit "special", users can translate the application and use it, but not share with others. They can though send it to us so we can repack it and charge other customers for it. Yes, we're greedy... but then again, we're in the market.

I have apparently a way to "accidently" come up with ideas that are good as they've implemented several of my suggestions.

BRAVO! :-* W/O people like you as key+ "idea_men" Ooops: ideapersons, companies would not have niches (pro. " NEECHE " ops ) in any marketplace and therefore be forced out by their own competitor's efforts, i.e.,those  that prove more creative and as a result more lucrative, that is the Amerikin way, excepting of course, MS, which historically strong arms the comps in one way or another-beating them into submission and ultimate extinction  via Bill's serrogate DELPHI BUEREAU ..MZ
