I don't think it will , I think it could eventually replace Windows in some situations.  8)

Since the "Chrome" browser has a Javascript engine...

One wonders how operating system neutral will be the shine on the chrome.

I miss the "BWG" trade mark - "It would be neat if this can run on OS/2-eCS".  ;D ;D ;D

"Chrome" is a step toward centralized control. Doesn't offer any features that interest me.

Read the comments at:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/09/02/google-chrome-first-impressions--revolutionary

At least this from the license "agreement", you give away everything but first-born-son:
"By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any content which you submit, post or display on or through, the services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the services and may be revoked for certain services as defined in the additional terms of those services."

Here is my take on this BigWarpGuy - 90% plus market share of the desktop space are represented by lots and lots of millions of computer users; and, if (remembering what the banks did when IBM urged migration to Linux) could be used a yardstick (measurement)... then the gut feeling is that it will have to be those millions and millions of desktop users who will have to form that mechanism that is being talked about; and, what is the time line that we are talking about when "Chrome will become the OS of Choice!!! Not anytime soon I guess.  8)

Greetings.

The whole concept of storing your personal data on someone else's server leaves me laughing.  :D

But far from surprised.  :o

This has been part of it from the start.

Look into DARPA's "Total Information Awareness" program.

By "Total" they surely mean every bit of information, in totality, (they make this clear on their web site), from the number of sheets you use to wipe your arse during any given session, to where your thoughts go in your dreams.

They are step by step, incrementally moving us along on an electric carpet, electricity being the "tric(k)" of the  "elect(ed)". And I mean that.

The best thing anyone can do is to keep one machine, (or a LAN), completely disconnected from the Internet, and use that for your personal computing.

This loss of privacy is in total conflict with the whole concept of  the PC, or Personal Computer. But like the "Patriot Act", (should be called the most "UNPatriotic Act", the UN carrying a double meaning), the thrust of which being in stark contradiction to the word "Patriot", the PC is meant to be in stark contradiction to "personal" for it is a tool to make everything that you have private, public.

And, eventually, (though not very far away time wise), the PC will functionally be the Public Computer.

We seem to live in an age of madness.

Personally, I'll be sticking with OS/2; "Security Through Obscurity".    :D

Hi Ben,

It gets even better (outrageously so)  8)

Re:

The auto-suggest feature of Google's new Chrome browser does more than just help users get where they are going. It will also give Google a wealth of information on what people are doing on the Internet besides searching.

Provided that users leave Chrome's auto-suggest feature on and have Google as their default search provider, Google will have access to any keystrokes that are typed into the browser's Omnibox, even before a user hits enter.

What's more, Google has every intention of retaining some of that data even after it provides the promised suggestions. A Google representative told CNET News that the company plans to store about 2 percent of that data--and plans to store it along with the Internet Protocol address of the computer that typed it.

In theory, that means that if one were to type the address of a site--even if they decide not to hit enter--they could leave incriminating evidence on Google's servers....

If this "Chrome's auto-suggest feature" et al are not quite s-c-a-r-y then what else is?  ???

Best regards,

SAB

Greetings, saborion2.

Eventually you won't have to do anything, the state will provide it for you.

Today, kids are coming out of school without even the basic skills on how to survive. They do not need them, or so the scholastic system tells them... and us.

We are all ready given out thoughts through TV, soon it will be, what OS' what programs, what colours and in what order we should button our shirts will be decided for us.

Bertrand Russell;
(I paraphrase for convenience...)

Quote
"We are structuring society so that soon people will be unable to do anything without consulting an Expert. Even now, parents cannot change a diaper with consultation."

This part, of course, has all ready been achieved.

Now they're recruiting people to spy on their neighbours... (http://www.self-wrighting.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=128&Itemid=10), (from my web site), and it is being paid for with our tax dollars!

Outrageous!

This is right out of Orwell's 1984 as previously executed in Nazi Germany.

After putting all of the above in perspective then the very simple question that should be asked is - "What Else Is (can be) New" When 2008 Must Be Like 1984 All Over - Again.  ;D

... and 1808, 1508, 508, 508 BC, 1508 BC, 2008 BC, etc...

Meaning, it has all be done before.

Just not so all encompassing, but using the same techniques.

Update - Google amends Chrome EULA

(Updated 4 Sep '08 0830 GMT) Google has amended section 11.1 of the Chrome EULA so that it now reads:

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights that you already hold in Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services.

There are now no other sub-sections in section 11. What you see is what you get. Terrific. Google acted with alacrity. Great stuff. No worries. The points below no longer apply.

Original story

Astute Reg readers have pointed out a Chrome condition of service that effectively lets Google use any of your copyrighted material posted to the web via Chrome without paying you a cent.

Greetings, Terry.

The thing that really burns my ass about EULAs today is simply this;

It doesn't matter what the EULA says when you partake.

They can change the end of the contract at any time that they wish. Once they have your information, they have it. Always. Forever. It doesn't matter if you delete it, it doesn't matter if you strangle their cat; they will always have it.

Why would any person with a functioning brain, participate in a deal in which the other party can change their side of the contract at any time! The guaranteed end result of this, is that that you'll get screwed over, big time; your own damn fault.

Now, just to fulfill the stream, (of thought), let us say that they are being honest and moral, acting in good conscience, with no intent of ever changing the contract, thus forcing you to comply, with no intent of ever selling the info, or in using the online program for data harvesting, (of course, data harvesting is the sole purpose for its existence), but let us just say, for intellectual discussion, that they aren't.

Tomorrow someone comes up, makes them an offer that no sane businessman can refuse, and **POOF!** All that changes, your data has been harvested, and you have absolutely no recourse.

This is something that the general populace just cannot understand the seriousness of;
All these processes are thought out well in advance to give the appearance of a natural evolving flow of applications and the Internet, (ha!), to sooth your concerns, to make you compliant. To make it appear as if someone has spoken up about your concerns, and that the issue has been dealt with, and has gone away.

Why would any person, or business, go through such lengthy measures to gain your personal data? It must be phenomenally important to them, yet not readily obvious to us..?

We are being handled.

Understand why.

Chrome aims to kill Windows? I don't think so.

Chrome is going to be the default browser for Android, an open-source operating system for mobile phones.
Nokia/Symbian browser looks hopeless.
Microsoft is way behind with DeepFish browser for Windows Phones.
Apple is looking good with Safari/iPhone, but hard to believe that everyone will buy an iPhone.

Sorry, Chrome looks very, very well-positioned.
3G mobile phones give broadband speed. What browser they run is important.

Hey Ben,

You have said inter alia:

Digging deeper,

Chrome is WebKit-based. Nokia-Symbian browser is WebKit-based. Apple Safari, both on iPhone, iPod and PC/Mac is the reference implementation of the Apple WebKit. Chrome is really looking like the Mozilla of mobile phone browsers.

Linux Mobile offers Opera. Mozilla has yet to come up with Firefox on any phone. But Samsung and others are using Safari on Linux Mobile.

Windows Mobile is way behind. DeepFish isn't out, which opens the possibility for third party browsers like Skyfire.

Can it be that Apple really has won the mobile phone browser market already?

This is significant, because there will soon be more internet-capable mobile phones than desktops and laptops combined.
