Title: Desktop doesn't launch. Also some programs.
Post by: szdl on 2008.09.24, 01:31:00
Hi!

I have a problem, which is critical.
Now, my os2 desktop doesn't start, I don't know why.
The system comes up correctly, the graphical system (mouse etc.) too, but there are no folders, no desktop.

I tried to strart a command line (os2 window) with startup.cmd, so now I can launch some programs, but I find a new error. Some programs don't start. Mostly programs with Odin or Innotek runtime required, and also Dos programs. Also old Mozilla doesn't start, but the new Firefox 3 is working!
What the hell is it?
I tried to start pmshell.exe at the second time to launch the folders, but it couldn't start.

Everything worked fine yesterday, but after a strange printing error the desktop can't start.

Chkdsk didn't show errors, filesystem seems to be Ok. But I tried to run checkini (a good ini file tool), but it couldn't find the Desktop folder (but it exists!).
I wanted to look in the registry files too with regedit2.exe, but it doesn't start.

Can someone help me here? I have no idea to solve it.

It sounds like something in your INI file is corrupted or broken.

One quick fix (that sometimes works) is to edit your config.sys file and add this line:

SET DESKTOP=C:\DESKTOP
(or where ever your desktop directory happens to be)

Failing that, and assuming you have Archiving turned on, you can do this...

On Warp/eCS BootBlock (white rectangle on top left with OS/2 or eCS next to it) hit ALT-F1...

When you get the boot options, pick an earlier archive and try that.

If that fails, you probably need to rebuild the INI files... let me know if that is the case and I will psot instructions.

One warning... chances are something was already going bad in the INI files, so you may experience other desktop related problems along the way.

Also, from what you are describing, you should have gotten an error saying "OS/2 cannot find your desktop..." - was that the case?

A word of warning before backstepping to an older archive;

Make sure that you have backed up your key files, (like config.sys), and taken anything off of the desktop that might be important, (and do an archive first, if you can), because once your do a restore, it will all be gone.

Good luck.

szdl, I can come up with only two possibilities: either your drive just
happened to flake out then and lost some sectors, or the print spooler somehow
trashed the Desktop directory. From the whole of the symptoms, I'd say the
latter, I include the drive possibility only because it's the one other item
that could be so comprehensive. However, I'd say the second is near a unique
occurrence. Only thing which came close for me also involves the Desktop: an
audio driver install put a badly formed directory name into Desktop, and it
entirely hung next boot, able to find only because knew when occurred.

Now is the time to meditate on the following:
xcopy c: d: /h /o /t /s /e /r /v
which will make a complete backup to another drive, even while running off
that drive, though makes some complaints.

You might be wise to make that backup even now, as you could recover most of
your customization and programs if you have to reinstall.

Let's see. You can look at options with alt-F1 when the white block appears; I
believe... (I have a memory like a steel sieve, and I'm sure others will roll
their eyes at it here...) that there's an option to re-initialize the Desktop,
though you lose the customization, AND it may not work for this.

Good luck.  (I'm a slow typist! RobertM and Ben appeared while I was at it!)

I added the SET DESKTOP .. to the CONFIG.SYS file, but it didn't help.
I don't want to restore an archive, because I have only old archives. It will be the very last solution.

I find this: http://www.os2ezine.com/v1n7/rescue.html
I followed the steps, but it didn'nt helped too. The checkini couldn'nt find the desktop.

Do you know a good utility to find lost sectors? If it can find them, it indicates the problem.

CHECKINI has an option to set DESKTOP location.  Quoting from the readme:

/D   -      Manually specify the location of the DESKTOP. Use this option only if CHECKINI asks for it!

Another option would be:

/T          Use this switch to enable the disk scan function of CHECKINI.
This will amongst other things repair non-functioning Startup folders.
NOTE: THIS SWITCH SHOULD NOT BE USED IF YOU HAVE MORE THEN ONE VERSION OF OS/2 INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM.

As for lost sectors, if that partition is formatted for the JFS file system, then you may want to try JRescuer.  Here's the download page URL:
http://en.ecomstation.ru/projects/jrescuer/?action=down
(It should be shareware, but I'm not sure about that).

I tried the /d option ( checkini /d d:\desktop ), but it didn't help. Still can't find the dektop.
It is interesting, that I copied a not too old ini file pair in, and it didn't help.

And I have HPFS unfortunately.
I'll try DFSee perhaps.

I tried DFSee scan, and there are no bad sectors yet.

I used this option without space but don't know if it matters (checkini /c /DD:\desktop). If a directory tree named desktop on d:\ exists, it worked for me every time.

It's the same with space.

I put the 'set desktop=' setting into the first line of config.sys , but no effect.

The real question is: why don't start some programs.

Hi, szdl!
I really don't know if this can help you, but...
Perhaps in your config.sys the LIBPATH= statement no longer has the initial dot before all other (executable) paths?
I mean: as you probably know, the first value in the LIBPATH statement should be a dot; the second being mostly "%your_bootdrive%\OS2\DLL".  So, assuming C: as your bootdrive, your LIBPATH should start with:

LIBPATH=.;C:\OS2\DLL; .............

Another possible source of trouble could be the PATH variable.
Perhaps some new install changed (one of) these values in such a way that neither the system nor the applications can find their DLLs or executables anymore.
The experience you reported about the odd behaviour the apps have when started ("Also old Mozilla doesn't start, but the new Firefox 3 is working!") made me think that this *might* be a path-related trouble.
Recent FFs (especially the builds coming in a zip archive) have the ability to run directly from their dir, without further actions.  On the contrary, older Mozilla builds often had some DLL to copy into another location (specified in the LIBPATH statement), such as (if memory assists me) GCC3xx.DLL (later LIBC0x.DLL).

Well, this is just my guess, but I know it could have nothing to do with your case...

Another alternative (which you dont need now since you ran DFSee) would be chkdsk c: /F:2 or /F:3

Only ever use /F:3 as a last resort... and of course you need to boot from some other media (install CD, etc) for chkdsk to work on the boot drive.

The dot is correct in the config.sys, so it is not problem. Also the PATH statement (it didn't change).

I experienced, that dos session and odin programs didn't start too.

I replaced the os2.in and os2sys.ini with an older one, but it has had ho effect.
Perhaps the "registry files"?? (user.dat, system.dat in the \os2\system directory) But the regedit2.exe doesn't start.
I learned, that the os2 registry files (these are for the win32 compatible programs (eg. Lotus SmartSuite, and win32 programs through ODIN, INNOWIN)) have the copy of some contents of the os2.in and os2sys.ini files. Perhaps the inconsistance of these files can be problematic..?

Hi szdl,

Differences in the WinApp registries should not cause issues with the desktop loading.

First and foremost at this point (if you haven't already), if you have stored anything at all on your desktop or in folders on your desktop (this does not include shadow objects), I would at least back up your desktop directory. At this point it sounds like you may need to either try an archive file or recreate the INI files.

If that is the case, create a backup folder on another drive. At an OS/2 command line, go into that backup folder, and type:

xcopy c:\Desktop\* /h /o /t /s /e /r

That way, at the least, you wont lose anything on your desktop, or stored in folders on it.

Now... a few final things you can try...

Do you have xWorkPlace installed?
(if yes)
- reboot the machine, when the desktop is about to start to load, hold down the RIGHT shift key until you get it's startup dialog.
- Pick xfix... look for weird problems, like Drive C (or whatever drive your desktop is on) missing a link to an actual object - or linked to something weird.

Another option if you have xWorkPlace installed...

- Skip all startup objects and enhancements

If the second one works, then something is corrupted that has to do with xWP or some other desktop extension.

If the first one shows errors, let us know. I've ran into that issue before... cant remember off the top of my head how I fixed it (probably restored an older archive, but I will give it some thought if no one else remembers how to fix it).

Thank you. I think I will do this when I have time.
But I have eComStation (1.1). Is it the same as xWP?

I'm pretty sure that xWP is entirely separate from and not included in any version of ECS, so RobertM was just hedging for a rather rare case.
Title: Re: Desktop doesn't launch. Also some programs.

Not true Ddan, eWP is a derivative of the xWP codebase and is as such, xWP vis-a-vis eWP and is certainly included in eCS. I'd suggest that the OP follow Robert's advice as XFIX can (and has) saved many a WPS (myself included).

I stand informed if not corrected. Extrapolated beyond my data. I did hedge at the last second. Thanks for your input, Saijin_Naib.

No problem. Granted, eWP is typically one release (or revision?) behind xWP but the major features are included including XFIX (which is the tool used to repair the INI files). Be warned that you can further destroy your ini files with XFIX if you delete the wrong handles so be VERY sure you know what you are doing.

So, I have already run makeini.exe as the last chance to recreate the ini files, but I have bad news: it couldn't help..

I think, it's clear now, that not the ini files are the bad guys..

But what to do now??

Hi szdl,

If:
(1) you have run makeini (for BOTH ini files... OS2.ini and OS2sys.ini, and from the correct location)
(2) you've tried xfix and found nothing wrong with the linkage for drive c (or whichever drive your desktop is on)
(3) your desktop directory does indeed exist (and if on FAT, the ea files do as well)

Then, I am wondering if some component of the WPS has been changed, damaged, superclassed with something broken (a WPS extender that failed to install correctly and replaced an original WPS component?) or modified?

Is there anything else leading up to this issue that might shed some light on it that you may not have already mentioned?

1. I can run makeini (from the correct location), on botth files.

2. I can't run xfix. It doesn't start.

3. The desktop directory exists (at the correct location).

I mentioned that replacing the ini files (with older versions) has NO (!) effect, the desktop can't launch this way.
I tried dozens of ini file utilities (from hobbes, os2site..), but they couldn't start or couldn't fix the problem.

And (now I have to restart the system many times) I found that the system boot hangs sometimes (sometimes not). What's it??
(I checked the filesystem (chckdisk /F:2, DFSee) and no errors were found! No hardware has changed (so there are no new cards etc), everything is the same like before. Other OS (Linux, Windows) boots correctly on this machine. And OS/2 worked too - until last week..)

The only other thing I can suggest (other than a reinstall) is to look for a bunch of "FOUND", "FOUND0", etc directories - if you find them, it is indicative of some pretty catastrophic file system error that occurred sometime in the past, which may be the culprit.

And, you can, from a commandline, try running SYSLEVEL and see if anything weird comes up (weird or incorrect version numbers/updates in the list it will generate).

Failing those, you can try booting to the Maintenance Desktop (but dont expect to ever be able to boot to your old desktop again - without even more issues in restoring it - so this is definitely a LAST CASE, DONT WANT TO REINSTALL option).

Sorry I'm out of suggestions... hopefully someone else has some better ones...

I did noticed a little script some time ago regarding desktop problems -

/* REXX */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysSetObjectData', 'RexxUtil', 'SysSetObjectData'
rc = SysSetObjectData('C:\Arbeitsoberfläche', 'OBJECTID=<WP_DESKTOP>')
EXIT

No clue if it can change things for you. Or course you have to change C:\Arbeitsoberfläche to your desktop directory.

By the way, do you have more than on Desktop tree? f. i. \Desktop1, \Desktop2...

There are "Found" directories, but they are old (eg. 1 year old date etc). Why should it influance the system, the desktop startup now? Why not earlier?

I run syslevel, but I didn't find any strange think in the output.

But thank you for your advices again!

Go to a command prompt and type:

dir nowhere* /ah

See what it says...

Also, as for the found directories, if they are older than when this started, they are probably irrelevant. If one or more of them coincide with when this started, it is possible that you will find a damaged OS/2 system component in one of them.

Now I changed the hardware under the OS. I put the harddisk into another similar machine.
But no effect. The error is the same.

But this way some hardware dependent errorrs are filtered (motherboard, cpu, memory, hdd controller etc.).

The other thing, I did: I compared the content of the \os2\dll directory with another installed eCS system, and it seems to be OK.

What to do now?

Why don't start some programs? (eg. DOS session, old Mozilla, ODIN things, Rexx system, printing..)

I agree that it sounds like something messed up on the hard disk and / or an ini issue, but one other thing to try:

Revert back to VGA mode.

A while back I ran into an issue on one of my machines where SNAP got messed up and my desktop never came up (the system would hang on a black screen).  By doing the ALT-F1 upon boot trick and selecting the VGA option, I was able to get the system back up and running.   I then ran the uninstall of SNAP, then reinstalled SNAP, and it worked.

I don't know if this will help, but with everything else you've tried, it is worth a try.

I agree that it sounds like something messed up on the hard disk and / or an ini issue, but one other thing to try:

Revert back to VGA mode.

It can't be ini issue, because replacing the ini files has no effect.

The grafical interface comes up, mouse is working, just the folders don't.
I can use an os2 command window or minishell from startup.cmd without any problems.

But the "Desktop" doesn't launch..

Maybe this is not your problem, but once I had a similar problem
when I removed the "PROGRAMS" or "FOLDERS" from SET AUTOSTART
line on CONFIG.SYS (I can't remember if it was PROGRAMS or FOLDERS).
So, search for the line SET AUTOSTART on your CONFIG.SYS and verify
if it is, at least, this way:

SET AUTOSTART=PROGRAMS,TASKLIST,FOLDERS

I agree.  It sounds like the video driver in some way got corrupted.  If it can boot up in VGA mode, then the SNAP or whatever driver you are using is corrupted.

I think, it's not problem. The screen resolutin is OK, it's the same as before.
Tha main problem is, that some programs doesn't start.

Two things come to mind.

1)  Is there anything in the desktop dir?  It should contain sub dir with the name of each foldes you had on the desktop.  If it does not then you will never get it back unless you have a backup of it.

2)  How did you change the ini files?  They are read only for a start.  The only was to change them is before you get to a graphics screen, that is , you must boot from disks or cd or the boot blob at start up.  If you try any other way what ever you copied will be overwritten by the ini files in memory when you shut down so going back to the old ones.

The subdirs are OK under the Desktop dir.

I changed the ini files with boot disk.

OK that's a start.  Now, have you tried to revert to bog standard VGA?  This will give some indication if the video driver is corrupt in some way.

Another thing please post your full config.sys as there may be something missing that is causing the problem.

At the moment there is insufficient information available to try and debug your system by remote control.  For example, what programs don't start and more importantly what programs do?

I think I don't have to revert to VGA, because there are no base gui problems. The PM comes up correctly, everything is in the same resolution, then before. The starting programs work well. Just the Desktop and the folders can't start. You know, on a correct system the pmshell.exe runs in two instances: first the base GUI starts, then the second pmshell opens the desktop folder.
At me the first is OK, but the second is not. I use an OS/2 command window (via startup.cmd), from where I can start programs (and MiniShell).

The config.sys was not changed after and before the error, so it must work.

These programs does NOT START:

pmshell.exe's second instance
DOS (and Win16) sessions
ODIN sessions (including Innowin - The Innotek Odin, like Acrobatreader 4/5 etc.)
Innotek's Java 1.4.2
Older Firefox (1.x, 2.x) and Mozilla (Including IWB)
Rexx sessions
Printer setup dialogs in programs
Lotus Smartsuite
Opera 5.

These programs load, but don't start. It can be seen with the "top" command line utility, or in FM/2's "Kill" window.
But they can't be killed!

And system shutdown doesn't work too (with the "shutdown" command, or from MiniShell (mshell) utility - because I can't use wps shutdown..).

These programs START CORRECTLY:

pmshell.exe 's first instance (the base GUI)
most VIO programs (eg. File Commander etc.)
simple, or mostly real native os/2 programs, that do not need too much "WPS things"
(e.g.: PMView, PMMail, Lucide, FM/2 and similar progs are working)
Java 1.1, 1.3.1, 1.4.1 (IBM, Golden Code) are OK!
Firefox 3, Seamonkey works!

Internet connection is OK too.

So, what is this? :-)

If after two weeks, you've gotten nowhere, maybe it's time to re-install? It's not that big of a hassle, and by now, would have saved many hours. Also, I doubt that figuring out the actual problem here will ever be of value, as it's become clear is a unique crash.

QuoteThe config.sys was not changed after and before the error, so it must work.

Famous last words.

I have a client who had a problem that all the normal remedies didn't fix.  We tried for several days over the phone, at last he brought the box round.  One of the first things I looked at were the configuration files (ibmlan.ini and other network files as this was supposedly a lan problem), in the end I looked at config.sys  and eventually found the problem, somehow a line had been corrupted so that a driver didn't load.

I'm not saying you have the same problem but it is one that should be eliminated.  My client swore blind that there wasn't any problem with ANY of his config files.

Your problem is looking more like one in which something doesn't get loaded at startup.  Therefore it points to configuration files, os2.ini, os2sys.ini or config.sys being the main ones, so check them then check them again and get someone else to check them for you as well as we all generally read what we expect to see.

If all else fails then a re-install is all that's left as ddan says

Reverting to VGA is only litte work. Simply <ALT><F1> and <F4> I think. I've no idea if video driver is your problem and probably your right on that. But if I were in your situation and someone would suggest me to try it out, I would spend this <2 minutes at least to proof that I'm right.

Well, as I suggested earlier, if this were my machine, the next thing I'd try is revert back to VGA then reinstalling SNAP, then checking all the DOS based device driver(s), and check for things in the config.sys like protectonly=yes (and if it is there change it to protectonly=no)

I'd also remove all the Innotek stuff and reinstall it.

And if the Innotek Font Engine is installed, I'd remove (or disable) it (just to make sure it isn't causing problems).

Why do I suggest the video issue as a place to start?  Simple.

DOS and WinOS/2 both rely on a working video driver that has both the PM side, the DOS side, and the Seamless side of the driver.  I've had machines where neither DOS nor WinOS/2 would work in either fullscreen or seamless mode, even though PMShell came up.  Reverting to VGA and then reinstalling SNAP has fixed it for me.  If the DOS side of the driver is corrupt, then none of the Dos or WinOS/2 stuff will start.  Furthermore any application that makes a call to any of the DOS side of the video driver will fail to work properly.  If the portion of the driver that hooks the Dos stuff into the PM stuff is corrupted, then even stranger things can happen even if you don't use any dos or win3.1 applications!

Odin stuff also hooks into the video sub-system in interesting ways to get the Win32 screens to display on OS/2.  In fact, there are certain video drivers that Odin / Innowin stuff just won't work with because they're missing the needed hooks (If you don't believe me then have a look at some of the readme documentation...  I've got an old S3 based video card that Odin stuff won't work at all on with the "native" S3 driver, but if I use it with SNAP in the GENGRAD settings it all works fine...)

Innotek Java 1.4.2 is built on Innowin / Odin, so the same as above would apply.

For the older versions of Firefox / Mozilla, this may be the same issue.  As I recall the older versions - some of them would load up the ipluginw.dll upon startup needed for plug-ins to work, and if you have either the Flash7 or the Innotek Java1.4.2 plugin installed, the plugin could be loading up portions into memory upon starting of Firefox.  Both of these plugins are based on Innowin / Odin.

Also the older versions of Firefox seemed to have issues with some video drivers and how they interacted with each other.  Does anyone remember the old version of Firefox that used to display some pictures and images upside down and then randomly crash?  The fix for the upside down images was to upgrade the video driver (even though everything else on the system appeared to work properly)... the crash was fixed with a later build of firefox.

Opera 5 - is also based on Odin stuff, see comments above.

Lotus Smartsuite - is based on Open32  (which also is part of the foundation of Odin / Innowin).

For the REXX and printer dialogues, I can't make a guess without more information.  But I still believe that video is a good item to try.

Of course I could be incorrect, but that's the nature of trying to fix a problem such as the one you have - you try different things until you find something that works, and all the potential solutions will be incorrect until you find the one that works.

This is the first time I have no f***ing clue on what happened to
a "crashed" OS/2 system! :/

Man, these are odd times! :P

Well, since "crying" will not do any good, backup whatever data you
believe is important and do a clean reinstall.
Maybe it could be a good time to get the latest eCS 2.0, if you were
running something older. At least it will save you dozens of hours
updating drivers and subsystems.

Any new idea?
Title: Re: Desktop doesn't launch. Also some programs.

Success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I solved the problem!!!

I copied a whole \os2 directory from an other existing, working installation, but I used the original os2*.ini files from the old os2 directory - and it WORKS!!!

I don't know which file was the 'evil', perhaps the user.dat and system.dat registry files (at \os2\system), or an other file, which can change during usage under the \os2 directory - but not the ini files.

Now I have to tune the system, correct some inconsistency between the two installations.

Thanks for everyone, who helped me here!

Daniel.

Congratulations.

But does leave unanswered whether your drive is flaky. Chkdsk doesn't actually check data of every file of course, only the allocation structures, nor does the hot patching notion always work, besides doesn't inform of its action, so you may have relocated a crucial file to a physically good spot. Keep in mind the possibility if you get file errors down the road; a bad drive can be extremely puzzling. You could try the smartctl.exe that I believe comes with the DANI driver, but I've never been able to make use of its reports.

Would not a SMART enabled drive report it's status to the BIOS of the host computer? I know mine does on my rather old ASUS board.

I think DFSEE may also be able to read SMART status.

SMART does report to BIOS, but like many good ideas, it's not used beyond a message because a) BIOS is too simple to do anything with it, and b) what CAN you do with a flaky drive except replace it? -- Actually, think SMART's only intent is to warn of IMPENDING failure. In the too many times (I've acquired many old drives probably abused by wearing FAT tracks out with FAT32) that I've seen those warnings in BIOS, the drive was still working but not reliable. To avoid nuisance, I've turned off the warning, and used at least one 3.2 heavily for months thereafter.  -- But any warning always means BACK UP NOW. -- When a drive dies, usually get nothing but a hang in BIOS, doesn't bother informing BIOS even that it has died. Online report via smartctl.exe gives ambiguous and mysterious numbers. The 250G that I mention elsewhere as slow to report to BIOS yet reliable for data returns some alarming numbers for retries and other items, but at least it's  stable in its behavior.

By the way, I've seen a few HDs "refurbished" by a machine an acquaintance has, but not over a third of those tried. -- On the other hand, I actually trust "factory refurbished" better than "new", besides that they're cheaper. Odds are that any given drive won't have TWO total failures, if it actually had any in the first place (many items returned are perfectly good).

Download SmartMon from Hobbes. It is commandline... it can be run from your OS2 install if you can boot to commandline. Read the instructions for the proper parameters to use to view the smart data for each drive. Ignore the predicted failure dates (as noted in the readme)... they are not properly estimated until the app has been run multiple times over some time period to allow estimation. Instead, look at the results returned by the program. It will read all available smart codes for the drive(s) it is run against. Virtually all will be represented with an explanatory label (ie: "Spin-up Count")... some odd ones (vendor specific, and not yet added to SmartMon) may instead be represented by their ID (ie: ID: 288)... if you get any of those, it will still report the value and the acceptable threshold as reported by the drive... simply Google the Smart ID and the drive manufacturer/type to see what the ID represents.

Some of the Smart data are not things to necessarily worry about (Power on Count, Spin-Up Count, etc) unless there are other related fields that are out of the safe threshold range, or their values are greatly out of the safe threshold.

Here's a screenshot of it running on my system (using a rexx script to update it every 10 seconds - the rexx script is what draws the additional info above and below the SmartMon output that you wont see). I am running it in "graphical" mode in this screenshot - there are other modes available (see docs).

Note, the list of Attributes in my screenshot will be different than the ones when you run it. You may have more, less or different ones. They are all dependent on what information the drive's SMART subsystem is designed to report.

Of prime importance (which will be on yours) is "Reallocated Sectors" and any various error rates.

Greetings, RobertM

An interesting program and an interesting REXX script.

I know where one can find Smart Monitor (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/disk/smartmon.zip).

But do you make your REXX script available?

Thank-you.
