Title: Blue Lightening Virus
Post by: kim on 2008.12.10, 23:19:14
While virus isn't an issue for OS2 I'm curious about what viruses actually exist for OS2. Among other I'm quite sure that most of you have read that there exist at least one known virus for OS2 - created by IBM'ers to show that virus very well can survive in an OS2 environment. I don't know the name of this virus or if it's called Blue Lightening virus I found an document with discussion on OS2 as a virus platform.

Question if anyone else has some info on this topic?

Hi Kim

A computer virus created by IBM? - that would be Microsoft wouldn't it?  ;-)

In all seriousness: I am sure that I read years ago in an os2 ng that IBM had 3 working OS/2 viruses/virii

I have no idea how true/accurate that is...

I have copy's of 5

10/03/04   1:02       1623           0  Virus.OS2.AEP.a.zip
5/08/01   5:57       7251           0  Virus.OS2.HLLP.7200.zip
1/03/04  18:55        984           0  Virus.OS2.Jiskefet.zip
10/03/04   1:02        780           0  Virus.OS2.MyName.a.zip
1/03/04  18:55      21396           0  Virus.OS2.Rexx.a.zip

The main problem is getting them to replicate effectively. Best chance is by social networking :o)

Hi Ian

Remind me not to "social network" with you  ;-)

Out of interest:

are the file dates the dates you downloaded them? - or are these newer than those I vaguely remember reading about pre 2000?

presuming they are older than the file dates do those viruses/virii cause an alert in current anti-virus software?

Regards

Pete

(Hits Go on virus scanner now ;-)

Hi Pete,

After checking the dates of the actual virus's contained in the zip files :-

12/12/95  18:24       1615           0  Virus.OS2.AEP.a.zip
5/08/01   5:57       7251           0  Virus.OS2.HLLP.7200.zip
1/03/04  18:55        984           0  Virus.OS2.Jiskefet.zip
10/03/04   1:02        780           0  Virus.OS2.MyName.a.zip
21/04/94  18:21      21388           0  Virus.OS2.Rexx.a.zip

Anything dated after 2000 I have no idea without doing a search though my archives,  you maybe able to fine release dates on one of the Anti-Virus lists. They should all be picked up by current AV scanners though I haven't checked, and I suspect some will nolonger run under modern OS/2. AEP and the Rexx [think the rexx one wont run unless you put the PC date back to pre 1995 or something] virus's were from memory experimental. MyName is more of a fun thing than a virus in my opinion if I remember correctly. I'm getting old :-|
