Title: eComStation on Virtual PC 2007
Post by: JohnQMetro on 2009.03.10, 13:54:17
Hello,

I'm trying to install eComStation 1.2R as a guest in Virtual PC 2007, and I'm having some problems. From what I've read, it has been done, but nobody mentions any problems. Does anybody know of any guides or tips?

For me, the installation always hangs during the second automatic reboot (after displaying the Sci-Tech driver boot msg.

??

Hi,

well I had eCS 1.0 working in VPC 2007... however, I did not try the Scitech driver.
( Reason being, that I have a fully subscribed Snap that is superior to the SE version included in eCS version prior 2.0RC... therefore I use standard base VGA during setup and then install "my" Snap later).
So I guess you should give it a try with either GenGradd or base VGA.

Hope this helps
Thomas

Well, it seems selecting basic VGA works (GENGRADD installation fails). Now I have to figure out how to get something better than VGA working. :P

first, scan your system to be sure file: VMadditions.iso is available and its location.

2nd, start your virtualized os/2 system.

3rd, click "cd" under title bar. then select "capture iso image"

a dialog default dialog box location opens. it should show the additions iso. if not, use the box control to find the file in the location your scan found it.

4th, double click on file name box will close. check mounting by clicking "cd" under title bar. previously greyed "release cd" will allow the release of the iso.

5th, from os/2 desktop, then system, then drives, find and open cdrom drive object. in the os2 folder is "os2inst.exe". double click and follow directions. this will give you higher resolutions, folder integration, etc.

good luck!

Hi,

yeah, of course! Good 1, wesco - I forgot to mention the guest additions driver.

@JohnQ... note: What wesco is explaining here is how to install the "OS/2 guest additions" that will install (amongst other things) a special graphics card driver for use in a virtual machine. ;)

Cheers,
Thomas

(1) Microsoft VPC causes problems when installing eCS (or OS/2), the original Connectix VPC does not. If you can then use the original VPC.
(2) Display driver: you need not use SNAP. The VPC emulates S3 Trio - a generic S3 Trio OS/2 driver is on your installation CD.

I am running eCS 1.1 in Connectix (winblows) VPC for a long time and I haven't encountered any problems. The eCS runs even faster than the winblows forced on my machine. Settings: no special settings, RAM 256 MB, HD 2 GB, no SNAP, VM additions installed. I have also run eCS 2.0 rc6 in Connectix VPC - but only under eCS.

Well,

What I have done is installed the OS/2 drivers from the s3 website. That works.
(http://www.s3graphics.com/en/resources/drivers/legacy/software_archive.jsp#id_765drv (http://www.s3graphics.com/en/resources/drivers/legacy/software_archive.jsp#id_765drv))

I'll have to try the VM add-ons: I didn't realize they could be used for eComStation as well as OS/2 4.x

Addons are much more useful because "driver" for shared folders than anything else. :)
