Title: Bounty Suggestion - Intel network Drivers
Post by: miturbide on 2009.11.21, 06:17:30
Mike send me the following suggestion for a Bounty and I want to discuss this with the community. So you comments are welcome.

"With the EOL support from IBM also vendors have stopped the development of drivers.
Intel stopped with the 100/1000 MBit network pci controller drivers, also IBM  had some own.

All newer PCI-E based chipsets are not supported. We have GenMAC to make use of windows drivers however there are specific problems with some protocols and GenMAC is not open source, right now nobody is working on it.

It was nice that we had a bounty for the nvidia network driver port, it was a good choice. We got a high quality driver as the driver for linux is not perfectly working for this chipset. The driver supports the nForce family of network chipsets from nForce2 to nForce5.

For Intel wouldn't be the same but one driver can support a family of chipsets.

The driver source you can get from Intel when you select the driver for linux or FreeBSD, e.g.  for the 82572EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller.  These chipsets/network adapters are supported:

        Intel® 82540EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
   Intel® 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller
   Intel® 82541EI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
   Intel® 82541ER Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Martin,

Will the Intel® PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter NIC Drivers work then for the rest? Those I know exist - both in a v4 and a v3.?? (which is supposed to be better). This driver comes in various of the Intel® PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter boxes as well as in WSeB (and thus I am presuming eCS).

Best,
Rob

I used to have a 82573E which I got to work with Genmac in unsupported mode.
While searching for a native driver for it I read somewhere that controllers up to and
including the 82562 were supported.
Now I have a desktop with the 82566 and it won't work with any of the native drivers,
and not with Genmac either.
If someone really started developing a driver I would support a bounty.

I have an Intel 1000 Dual Port Adapter I will test with the standard Intel/IBM drivers shortly. Will post the results soon as I get to it.

uhm.. I just saw on the GENMAC newslist that there some unsupported test versions of more network drivers working on GENMAC, it is called GenMU and was put together by Doug Bissett.

Last version (GenMU-0-1-2.wpi) (21/01/2010) says on the readme file:

UNOFFICIAL DEVICES supported as UNSUPPORTED:
=====================
Atheros Wlan AR5007EG/AR242X [168C:001C]
Attansic Fast Ethernet [1969:2048]
Broadcom Gigabit [14E4:165A]
Broadcom Gigabit [14E4:1693]
Intel 10/100/1000 DM [8086:104A]
Intel 10/100/1000 GT [8086:107C]
Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL [8086:108C]

DEVICES UPDATED:
=====================
Intel 2200 Wlan [8086:4220]
Intel 2915abg Wlan [8086:4224]

Can't belive I just find this news and it was in the list some time ago.
