Title: CD-ROM Drive error trying to install ECS 2.0 RC7
Post by: miturbide on 2009.12.03, 14:41:06
Hi

I'm trying to install eCS 2.0 RC7 on a HP Pavilion DV6. (http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/HP_Pavilion_dv6). This machine is a laptop with 4GB in RAM and Intel Core 2 Duo.

If I boot from the CD and select "Default Values", the installation goes until

"Unpacking eComStation Installation diskette files to memory disk...
CD-ROM sector read error (drive=00, sectore=2,064, Code=09)."

and freeze right there. If I select "Boot with menu for own values" it freeze in the same part.

Any ideas why Im getting this error or any workarround?  I'm so sure the CD is working ok, I installed eCS on virtual machines without any problems with that CD.

Will it be some incompatibility with the DVD drive (hp CDDVDW TS-L633M ATA Device)?

Any tips will be apreciated.

Can you switch: BIOS Setup -> SATA controller =  AHCI -> Compatible mode ?

does your notebook work in ^ compatible mode?

Hey Martin, I had tried to install eCS 2.0 RC5 on the same laptop (my friends) and could never get it past that stage as it would stop before loading all the drivers. We even updated the BIOS but this made the situation worse.

We also had trouble booting Ubuntu. It would appear that on that laptop HP have done something with the BIOS to restrict non Windows OSes from booting. Ubuntu has probably worked around this but I never could get Zeta nor eCS to boot.

ouch.. this is really bad.

I had tried to find the "SATA controller =  AHCI -> Compatible mode" following eugene advice but it is not available on the BIOS.

uhm... this really sucks. If we can not find a workarround it deserves to open a ticket to Serenity/Mensys. Since the idea of eCS was to run also on newer hardware.

Hi All

Saijin_Naib

With regard to your comment "It would appear that on that laptop HP have done something with the BIOS to restrict non Windows OSes from booting." : Did you ever contact HP about your suspicions?

It would be useful to know for sure either way...

Martin

Maybe you should ask HP about any potential problems installing non-Windows OS's to this system.

Regards

Pete

Have you got an older eCS 1.2 disc, or a bootable (and updated with something like updcd) copy of Warp 4 to try?  I'm wondering if it can be identified as either a 2.0 issue (something with how the initial stages of the installer is working) or if it is something else going on.

It *might* also be a memory issue.  Any chance you can drop it down to 2 GB just for the install?

The reason I ask is I did manage to get OS/2 up and running on a (2 Gig memory) HP DV6000 notebook about 6 months ago, although I honestly can't recall what I did to get it running or which version it was (I had the notebook for a weekend, a friend had asked me to wipe it clean and re-install back to factory, so while I had it I tried dropping Warp on it before returning it to factory settings with Windows just to see what happened).  I would have used eiher eCS 1.2MR or Warp 4 + FP15 + newest kernel + newest DANIS, etc etc (made with UpdCD).  I do recall that I didn't get everything to work (for example, Wifi didn't work, but I didn't have much time to play with it either) but I did get it to install and boot.  But it took me some playing around to get it to work.

As for contacting HP, I can tell you what their support will likely say...

Installing an OS that did not come with the computer is not supported by HP, so to do so will take your machine out of warranty, and they will not help with that beyond providing the hardware specs of the machine.  Otherwise you're on your own.

Technically they still have to provide hardware warranty if there is a problem.   But they don't have to provide any software / OS support if you put anything else on the system.

Hi

I also removed one 2GB memory SO-DimM, so I leave only 2GB of RAM. Same error.

This has nothing todo with the OS/2 boot. What is going wrong is that OS2CSM code is trying to read the diskette images from the CD ROM and for what ever reason this is not working. The whole OS2LDR Is not even loaded at this monent.

What will most likely work is install eCS on system and copy the configuration over to this new system.
This is most likely a BIOS INT 13 problem somehow.

OS/2 Warp Server for e-business 4.52 Boot CD hangs on:
"SYS732; IBMInt13.i13 Found a drive greated than 8GB
OS/2 is unable to opsate your....."

eComstation 1.2 Boot CD
Same CD-ROM sector read error.

eComstation 1.2R CD
Same CD-ROM sector read error.

eComStation 2.0 RC5
Same CD-ROM sector read error.

I don't have at hand any other warp 4.52 updated with updcd. I will have to prepare them for testing.

Well this is either a crappy BIOS in the machine or its a bug in OS2CSM or the CD is somehow burned to fast.
Don't know. Open a bug in the eCS but tracker with the information you posted here.

Hi Roderick

When I try to open a bug under "eComStation 2.0 (beta)" (http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/set_project.php) project it says me:

"APPLICATION ERROR #12

This account is protected. You are not allowed to access this until the account protection is lifted.

Please use the "Back" button in your web browser to return to the previous page. There you can correct whatever problems were identified in this error or select another action. You can also click an option from the menu bar to go directly to a new section."

???

Martin,

Have you tried different media? (ie: TDK or Memorex instead of Sony CD-RW's - inotherwords, any different brand than the one you are using)

I've had a problem where certain HPs would not even read their own restore disks until I burned them to a different brand... and certain Sony's would not read any restore disks created on Sony CDRWs but would read them fine otherwise. The problem was always consistent and very similar to the ones you are experiencing.

Best,
Robert

Strange that Optical drives have these issues. I would think that we could have them more ironed out by now? The only application where I have ever had brand issues is with my 1st Gen Xbox and its Thompson DVD-ROM Drive. It will read maybe 1/5 CDs/DVDs you throw at it. I replaced it with a Samsung and it plays everything without issue.

What brand is your Optical drive? Perhaps someone on-line has posted about whether or not it is finicky with certain media.

The DVD drive recognized by a HW info tools says:
Drive Model "HP CDDVDW TS-L633M"
Drive Revision "0301"

I'm thinking more about the SATA controller, since you can't turn the compatibility mode on the BIOS. Possible that's why it don't recognize the DVD.

That is indeed a possibility. I had a similar issue with my old Compaq Laptop (EIDE CD-ROM though) and DANIS. It would only work with the version of DANIS from 1.2mr until I discovered that if I took the /BIOS switch off the DANIS in the [boot with own configuration] menu it would boot properly.

TS-L633M is actually looking to be a Samsung drive, firmware are here:
http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/Firmware/Firmware/Firmware.asp?searchMode=&product_code=SCR

Perhaps with a more recent firmware it will behave better?

Since this is a laptop, was the DVD driver not delivered with the laptop ? Setting the BIOS to compability or mode or not will not matter. What I meant in my previous postings is that when you get this error message no DANIS506.add is even loaded or OS/2 is not even active what so ever. From what I'm reading I get the impression you think OS/2 is active.

This OS2CSM stuff was done by Veit Kannegeiser and its a kind of mini OS that reads the kernel etc from the diskette images on CD. This is unpacked to RAM disk in memory.  But when this error message occurs nothing of OS/2 is loaded.

Saijin_Naib I did see you mention the DANIS506.ADD driver. Its none related in this case since OS/2 is not loaded.

That the CD Martin also worked inside a Virtual Machine is not a warranty it works the same as booted on real hardware. Since under an OS loaded and then a VM accesing the CD it will do this in a different fashion then when booting via the BIOS.

Hi Roderick

The DVD drive is the one that came with the laptop. I haven't change the drive.

I will try to burn the image again on a diferent CD brand and burn it at the lowest speed posible (4x) to see the results.

No, it didn't work.

I'm starting to think that eCS can not be installed on machines that do not have SATA compatibility mode.

Here it is the bug number posted on the Bugtracker.
http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2712 (http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2712)

If it is not possible to install eCS on machines that do not have SATA compatibility mode will be quite sad, since SATA is the present and we will be limited to choose machines with that feature only.  I just hoping I'm wrong with this, and a solution appear for this problem I'm having.
