Well, for the sake of correctness, this topic's title should read
"Run eCS inside a VM on QuadCore with Skype, webcams and much more".

Hey,

wow. I didn't actually expect that you would do this. Thanks a ton.
After looking at it again I though I might have exaggerated ...and that my comment may sound harsh.
I guess it was because of my disappointment when I discovered that my initial worst expectation ("this can only work in a VM") proved to be true.

Anyway, thanks for changing it despite the risk of spoiling the business idea behind it.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hi again,

oh, BTW: Regarding the business idea:
Actually, quite some people (at least in the German forums at os2.org) start thinking out loud in public about virtualizing their eCS instead of desparately trying to run it natively with increasing obstacles.
Some even keep advocating this would be the only "reasonable" future for eCS.
So - your idea has a lot of potential! Good luck.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hmmmm...

...while this idea makes sense, the question remains:

"Why then rcontinue using eCS?"

...this might start the slow downfall of eCS (or whatever still remains)...

...sad and depressing (for me personally)...  :-[

Good idea, Paul. I hope you're going to show us a system at Warpstock next August.

I concur StefanZ. If some day 'inside VM' would be the only option then eCS time will be definitely over for me.

Well, for me too.
Anyway, I don't feel depressed yet. eCS has in fact not been better than now, so this is not he time to bury it!

Hi,

this is interesting. The German forums show exactly the same split in opinions like here.

In general, the question "why run it at all" can be answered with the ever-existing argument "I have an application that is unbeatable for doing [xyz] and which is OS/2 native".

For those who only have 1 computer and don't want to have to reboot to switch OS, a VM is a pretty good solution. And for the records: You can also run your XP as a guest in VBox on an OS/2 host... whatever. ;)

Still, I personally feel the same - my preference is to have a native eCS.
But that's only because I have more than 1 PC and can run <other OS> natively in parallel. Ok, I'll have to use the KVM switch to switch between them... ;)

Cheers,
Thomas

Even if I had only one pc I would still run native eCS/OS2. Hard to say what the future brings,
but running eCS/OS2 in VM is no alternative for us, not at work or at home. If we cannot use
eCS/OS2 native on new hardware, we would change to another OS and most likely I would
keep one eCS installation in a VM on a home pc, just for fun.
