Title: eComstation Facebook page
Post by: oli on 2010.01.14, 07:20:05
For those of you that have no real social life there is now a Facebook page for eCS, not much material there yet, but that will hopefully change in the near future.

Hi

Maybe someone with a facebook account could report a simple problem with facebook: The given url - http://www.facebook.com/pages/eComStation/249939142333 - loads as http://m.facebook.com/pages/eComStation/249939142333?w2m with a resulting "Page Not Found".

The same applies to all other - not many admittedly - facebook urls I've tried.

I suspect that it is something to do with facebook checking browser in use and for whatever reason simply defaulting to mobile(?) facebook because the browser  -  Seamonkey V2.0.1 -  is not recognised.

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete,
since some time I have trouble opening facebook. When I try to access facebook.com I get an file-opening dialogue, if I want to save to disk or open with..xxx. If I search for myself on google and use the facebook hit for my name everything works allright. This is strange!

I've seen this before with firefox under OS/2. It tries to download the .php page if you go to (for instance) www.facebook.com

try including the path to the home starting page instead:
http://www.facebook.com/#/?ref=home

This worked for me.

Hi Saijin_Naib

The problem is that any attempt to access any facebook.com url results in either "Page not found" or an offer to download a silly file "which is a: application/vnd.wap.xhmtl+xml from: http://m.facebook.com" - the clue maybe in the "m.facebook.com" bit.

This is probably the result of some poor website coding - I suspect the site does not recognize the browser: ergo it must be a mobile phone browser.

I get the impression that facebook.com is run by idiots and staffed by morons - there is no way to contact anyone responsible for the site without creating an account: which their poxy site prevents anyway.

So, how to let them know their site does not work?

Regards

Pete

Interesting, we were both experiencing different issues. I wonder if you can use about:config to have the browser identify as running under Windows NT5.0 (2k Pro), NT5.1 (XP), NT6.0 (Vista), and NT6.1 (Win7) and above and see what happens...

My guess is that they don't recognize OS/2 and bounce it.

Sajin, thanks for the tip, but it didn't work either. I also got the same "application/vnd.wap.xhmtl+xml" download suggestion as you Pete. If I type www.facebook.com I get home.php to download or open. If opening in FF this opens  a nongraphic home.php which then has been downloaded to my tempdir. On that side I can click on "access the main site", which opens a normal facebook login page, with the adress http://www.facebook.com/?m2w. This seems to be a working adress, but....if I want to log out again I get the same silly "application/vnd.wap.xhmtl+xml" download suggestion.

What versions of Firefox are you using Melf? I was using the 3.5.x and 3.6.x builds and was able to connect, so long as I didn't type just the plain www.facebook.com

Probelm seems to be solved for my part. I use the Peter Weilbachers 2.0.0.21 and when I tried your suggestion and changed the value in about config  of "general.useragent.extra.firefox" from PmW-Fx/2.0.0.21 to Firefox/2.0.0.21 it worked as usual.

But my bank still point to me everytime that they don't recommend my browser, so it seems like facebooks identifying procedure is not so "deep" as my bank's.

The link below appears to work on some browsers and not others, fine on google Win, Iexplore win and Opera Win, but only sometimes on FF356 win and OS/2 and sometimes not, strange bug indeed.

Hi All

I think this is simply a case of facebook.com checking browser in use - and getting it wrong.

I'm using Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (OS/2; U; Warp 4.5; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091220 SeaMonkey/2.0.1
The result is the offer of a useless file and the url is redirected to the m.facebook.com site.

If I change that to Build identifier: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1) - User Agent Switcher is a useful extension - there is no problem accessing http://www.facebook.com/pages/eComStation/249939142333

Melf:

You may want to try using User Agent Switcher to set the browser to report itself as whatever your bank prefers - probably WinVista/Win7 and IE x (where x = whatever is the current IE release: not being a windows user I have no idea what that is) - certainly beats fannying around with about.config  :-)

Regards

Pete

IE8, but not a bright idea if your bank is expecting and relying upon ActiveX Support. I'd venture switching to a stable Mozilla number under Windows XP or above will net you the same result.

Thanks for the suggestion Pete,I'll try the extension. If I use the official Firefox I get no comments of my browser.
