I'm kind of new to OS/2, and would like to ask if version Warp 4 is suitable for building a multi-functional server computer: router, fax receiver and transmitter (I would like to use Cheyenne Bitware for Windows 3.11), fooling around with old games. Of course, internet router is the priority one.
Are there any applications, howtos to do this? Are there networking and security applications, like highly-configurable firewalls, dhcp servers, etc.? Is Warp 4 secure enough to be connected to the internet 24/7 (e.g. are there dangerous bugs or security holes that hasn't been fixed)?

I don't remember correctly, but should have some docs regarding OS/2 as a router. You surely can, IIRC, even with more than one NIC.
About faxing, IMHO it's better to use native software like FaxWorks (bundled with BonusPak or eComStation) and SANE/TAME (free software) as a scanning solution.
As for security, Warp 4.52 (even better eComStation) outperforms Win*, and ClamAV is useful to avoid virus spreading in a non-OS/2 network using OS/2 as a router.
Ohter people here uses OS/2 in a multi-OS network environment and will/can help better (I will too, though, as soon as I will be able to rebuild my PCs).

Hello Stringz, I'm not an internet connection expert, but I can state this:
OS/2 and eCS are sometimes very easy to configure, sometimes very complicated. But once You set everything, it can work for decades without problem. I have some linux friends who had detailed examine my 24/7 machine security level. It is a rock solid. :o
I did this a long time ago and it was pretty easy to setup, so I know it can be done. Just make sure that you use two different NiC cards, it will save you from a big headache. Also, I would recommend InJoy firewall.
What type of a router are you looking for? Something simple just for home use (such as the type of routing that you'd get from something like a home-based Linksys / DLink / Netgear / etc box)? Or something more complex (similar to what you'd get from a Cisco box, a Linux box running something like PFSense, a netscreen box, etc)?
Both can be done in Warp, but the approach is a little different.

Yes, a router for home use would be sufficient. Now I have Debian Linux in that comupter configured to be router, with basic masquerading and a DHCP server for LAN.
Btw, it's a Pentium I 233MHz computer with 128MB of RAM. This meets OS/2 Warp 4 minimum system requirements, but how fast should I expect it to run? Will it be faster than Windows 98 (which used to be a little slow)?
P I 233 /128 is much above Warp4 minimal configuration.
For example, with PIII 600 MHz, Torrent client (128 kbps) and DC++ client (256 kbps) uses about 85 % under Win98 and same about 12% under Warp4. So Warp4 is little faster than Win98.

In addition to cyber's comparison, I used to run DNS (over ten domains, 3 of which generated over 10,000 DNS requests a day) and mail servers (and a backup web server) on IBM PC330 series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PC_Series#PC_330) machines with anything from a Pentium 90MHz to Pentium 133MHz CPU and 96MB to 128MB of RAM.
For many server based applications such as what you desire, it doesnt take OS/2 very much in the line of resources to get the job done - assuming you are using either an OS/2 native application (InJoy, IBM DNS client, Weasel, LDGW, etc), or a well ported Linux app (Squid, etc). At that time, my fastest machines were an IBM PC750 (dual Pentium Pro 200MHz) and IBM Intellistations (single and dual 300MHz Pentium II and Pentium III configurations and a 450MHz Intellistation) - they handled (individually) sometimes upwards of 30,000 web requests a day.
My current main server (IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 with quad 550MHz Pentium III CPUs) handles even more traffic (it hosts the Star Trek New Voyages: Phase 2 website and about a dozen others, as well as mail, ftp (few gigs a day transfer) and so on) and barely uses the CPUs except for intensive SQL queries that arise for certain custom apps.
So... no worries... you really dont need much in the line of CPU or such for what you need.

Point is if You compare OS/2 vs. other operating systems, it isn't so much difference in single task/app/program as there is in multi process activity. Not only compared to Windows-base OS's, even Linux are to much slow and require too much memory...

There is cttorrent, and PM CTorrent Manager if You ask for GUI.

Don't forget about Qbittorrent, a open source client that uses Qt4. qBittorrent v2 is the closest open source (GNU GPL v2 license) equivalent to utorrent.

Hi,
Is there a IP_CONNTRACK timeout setting we can adjust in os/2 or injoy firewall?
I used to run smoothwall and it always die on bittorrent traffic until i adjust the ip_conntrack settings from 5 days timeout to something else.
