Title: Can A: drive and B drive be removed from eCS?
Post by: steve b on 2010.06.22, 16:32:41
Actually, both Unimaint and Black Hole removes them, but they reappear. I don't see where they are in the registry editor or OS2*.ini files. I confess that I'm old enough to have used a B: drive, but since I don't even have a floppy drive on my T43 or on the last computer, I thought it would be nice to get rid of the extra entries on every search and every access of the drives folder. Yes, a solution to that is appreciated.

Hi:  I donot have an answer to your specific question, but have a related question,  under ecom can the drive letters be assigned.  If no, why?  If yes how to  and what are the caveats.
Thanks

Regards Phil.

Hi Phil

Yes drive letters can be assigned to whatever Volumes you like.

You need to use LVM (Logical Volume Manager) to create Volumes and assign drive letters.

That's it but if you don't want to fight with the "ueee" LVM window then search the "mini LVM" in \ecs\bin (I think it's \ecs\bin). It's an application that can do almost everything what can be done with the standard LVM (including assigning letters to partitions) and it is much more user friendly than LVM. AFAIK a link to mini LVM is not in your utilities folder so that you need to create it yourself. Mini LVM has its icon so that you can skip all apps without icons in the folder when searching for it.

As far as A:\ and B:\ are considered, I would also appreciate a possibility to get rid of them. In W3, it was possible to move them to a diskette and then format the diskette  ;D  but it does not work any more for a long time.

am wondering whether drive lettersA and B can be assigned to my
second hard drive, (where I have ecs 2.0 ga installed
I don't see that option in lvm

No. A: and B: are diskettes. You cannot assign them to HD partitions. It is possible to assign A: to a USB mass storage device (at least to some of them, usbcfg can do it).

I have created exclusive filters for the Drive A and Drive B object titles:

Drives -> Properties -> Include -> Add

Another (untested) idea is to remove the BASEDEV=IBM1FLPY.ADD (and IBM2FLPY.ADD, if not already).

What about assigning them to a virtual drive, is that possible???

Hi Radek

I think you may be a little bit confused when stating "It is possible to assign A: to a USB mass storage device (at least to some of them, usbcfg can do it)." as USBcfg does not assign drives at all.

What USBcfg can do is configure USB storage drivers including USB Floppy, which can be drive A: under some circumstances. It is also possible to configure (some) USB drives as a large floppy - but they may not get the drive letter A: when attached.

Pete

Well,  that was a convenient solution (excluding the object) Thanks!

asch, that worked great. Deleting/ rem'ing the floppy drivers will not eliminate A and B.

Well, regardless, one can still REM out IBM2FLPY.ADD - unless you have a PS/2 system. There are other similar entries which can be REM'd out as well.
