Hi
I had a question about installing eComStation 2.0.
If I had a new machine (Intel Core 2 Duo) with SATA drives, with "NO ACHI COMPATIBILITY OR LEGACY" mode inside this mainboard BIOS.
1.- It is possible to install eCS 2.0 there?
2.- If possible, Is there any workarround documented?
Martin
It's possible, that whoever is doing the Dani driver update will let you try a beta version. It is also possible, that "ACHI COMPATIBILITY OR LEGACY" mode will be automatically detected, and used by the current Dani driver. You would need to try it to see if that is the case. Otherwise, you are going to have to use a virtual machine, under another OS, until the Dani driver, with AHCI support, becomes available.
Thanks DougB
Let me know if you need a beta tester for the ACHI enhanced Dani driver when it is ready.
Hi Martin
The danis506.add v1.8.6 is currently in testing - if you are a member of the eCS TestTeam you should be able to get a copy.
I must admit that I am not sure whether this build supports AHCI so I've asked that question and will let you know when I have an answer.

Pete
Hi Martin
And the answer is:
"Somewhat. Most of the AHCI chipsets out there can run in SATA or AHCI
mode. The chipset will be supported in SATA mode. In some cases, this
will be the start up default. In others, there will be a BIOS setting.
Full AHCI support will happen."
So, no AHCI support at the moment.
Regards
Pete
Thanks Pete
I'm more interested to use it on mainboards that does not have ACHI compatibility mode, or SATA compatibility mode option, since it seems to be no way to install eCS on that kind of machines for the moment.
I will be waiting for it.

I just installed ECS 2.0 on my T500 without putting it into compatibility mode, it went without any hitches.

I have no inside information about this. All I know, is that someone is working on it.

It depends on the machine. Some do not have the settings, but they will use whatever mode the driver supports. Some (usually older machines) only have SATA (compatibility) mode, and some only have AHCI mode, with no settings, while others require the user to select the mode using a BIOS setting. The AHCI only machines will not work with the current (and apparently, the next) Dani driver. The only way to know, for sure, if it will work, or not, is to try it.
Hi Robert
Did you update some driver?
I have a Intel DH55TC (with i5 proc). If I change from "IDE - Legacy" to ACHI or from "IDE - Legacy" to "IDE - Native". I get the famous error:
OS/2 is unable to operate your hard disk or....
The system is stopped. Correct the....
It only works on "IDE - Legacy" mode for me.
By the way. I have two test machines.
1) HP Pavilion Dv6 with NO SATA compatibility mode option on the BIOS. (and no VTx)
There is no way to boot the eComStation CD-Rom on this machine. The bug is reported on the eCS bugtracker (http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2712).
2) Clone with Intel DH55TC mainboard with Intel i5 750 proc.
I had installed eComStation 2.0 using IDE Legacy mode instead of ACHI or IDE Native.

I didn't change anything. I simply forgot to put it into compatibility mode before attempting the install and everything went smoothly. There is one thing which might be causing it to work though that I hadn't thought of. I installed on a HD in a ultraslim adapter, it is possible since this is where the cdrom would normally be connected that it doesn't use ACHI on this port.
Sorry to resurrect old post but since it is related to ecs installation and AHCI than it may be of interest.
Hardware: LENOVO TP L512, i5, 500GB sata HD, sata CD/DVD. For beginning this should be enough.
Problem: Booting from internal CD in AHCI mode - fail. Must be in COMPATIBILITY mode (BIOS). After first phase (first reboot) TP crashed. Reseting mode to AHCI (BIOS) system start to boot from HD but than fail with known msg:
OS/2 cannot operate your HD or ... That happens when DANI driver should be loaded, as meter of fact it start to load because there is first line of Dani driver ( /V in config, sys) Version of Danis506 is 1.8.7.
Any suggestions???

Kreso
Hi Kreso
Interesting... the danis506.add on my eCS2.0 CD is 1.8.5.
How do you have the 1.8.7 version on hard drive? Did you update that driver at the end of phase1 of install using Maintenance Console?
Resetting the BIOS to use AHCI will not work unless the danis506.add used can force IDE/COMPATIBILITY mode - I'm not sure if 1.8.5 can do that.
It might be worth trying to find out why your system crashed at the reboot at end of install phase1 as it may have nothing to do with AHCI.

Pete
Yes I updated my CD#1 with new Dani driver hoping that will help with AHCI but it did not. Reason was that in compatibility mod system hang after first reboot with a msg which I do not have here. I will recreate the situation and post a msg.
Hi,
it may be worth giving an USB connected CD/DVD drive a try and install from there. That worked for me very often. I guess if only the HDD is SATA AHCI may work during installation. Once installed you might have both working, SATA CD and DVD.
I did that last evening and still the same. I will try today again with default language to see if there any difference. Language was changed on pre-boot screen.
So I try installation again but without success. Again it hangs after first reboot. This time I wrote the massage. Here it is: 0000000024BC0B32-SYS2027-0000:0180.
As fare as I remember this msg means that OS2BOOT is missing. I other words HD is not visible and files are not found. That leads to the DANIS506.add file which most probably does not support AHCI. At least on this machine. I will try installation on another ThinkPad (R60). If that goes OK as silver version of EcS then something is different between implementation of the AHCI on this two ThinkPads.
AHCI is definitely NOT supported by the Dani driver, yet (v 1.8.7). Some machines will automatically switch to compatibility mode, some need to be switched in the BIOS, and some just don't have compatibility mode. It seems that your machine does not switch automatically. If you are lucky, you should be able to switch it in the BIOS. If there is no BIOS setting, you will have to wait for the AHCI support.
This is questionable. I just installed EcS v 2 on thinkpad R60 with AHACI enabled and there was no problem. Dani version is 1.8.5 (supp with Ecs). So I took the HD out and now I will try to install it to the new ThinkPad. lets see what will be the outcome.
Hi Kreso
SYS2027: Insert a system diskette and restart the system.
Looks like the system cannot boot from the HD.
As you can work with the HD when booted from the install CD it makes me wonder what the problem is.
How did you create the boot Volume - Is it an LVM or Compatibility Volume? - What filesystem is in use? - Is Boot Manager involved?
Regards
Pete

This is definitly wrong. I installed eCS 2 on my Lenovo X200T in compatibility mode, once installation was finished I switched to AHCI, primary for Windows 7. eCS2 does still run with AHCI mode.
Even more difficult: With the HP Mini 210 Netbook I once had, that did not come with compatibitility mode at all. I used the DFSEE boot CD to wipe the whole HDD and partionate it. Then I installed a (because of the Intel10 Chipset not usually supported) self patched Windows XP on it. After that I copied an eCS installation Image I made with another PC via the availiable DFSEE option on the HDD of the Netbook (Installation even via USB was not possible). It started and it did run very well in AHCI mode.

It started and it did run very well in AHCI mode.
Then either that option doesn't do what it promises or the notebook does some
extra magic to enable compatibility by default. None of the current DANI drivers
supports native AHCI. She once told me that making that happen would require
a major conceptual rework of both DANIATAPI and DANIS506. An endeavor for
which she had not enough motivation anymore...
:)So this will be an interesting thread. Here are the answers:
1. Yes system cannot boot from HD. I realize that.
2. it is LVM and JFS
3. Boot Manager involved - YES. Win 7 will be installed.
For understanding: Via BIOS I can set COMPATIBILITY or AHCI mod.
If in COMPATIBILITY then system hangs immediately after reboot start.
If in AHCI then Boot Manager start-EcS selected(its the only one), Boot start, came to DANI, show first line of the driver, next msg is that OS/2 cannot operate HD.
I have mounted HD with freshly installed EcS 2 on another ThinkPad (R60) with AHCI enabled, to my new ThinkPad L512. Result is the same as in above answers. Does not work in any case with same massages. In R60 is working without problems (some small, but for those I know the reason&can be easily solved). So my conclusion is that Dani is not fully AHCI compatible or L52 have something different in implementing AHCI, or it is unsuported chipset. That I have to check (today)

Hi Rudi,
yes, it may have happend by accident or some "inbuild compatibiliy mode" I did / do not know. I just can write / tell what did happen to me. I am as suprised about this as others may be as well!
To figure out WHY this happen is beyond my skills....
BTW: Did the Virtualbox Image arrive and was it usefull for you?
Hi Kreso
Your reply suggests the Boot Volume is an LVM Volume using BootableJFS.
A BootableJFS volume should be created as a Compatibility Volume not an LVM Volume.
I wonder if that is the cause of the problem?

Pete
Just to give it:
here you can see what I have done with the netbook:
http://bugs.ecomstation.nl/view.php?id=2785
and here are some more interesting suggestions given by Mikael Elf, even if it might not be related to AHCI it shows, that there may be unexpected ways to overcome such problems, if you are bold, enthusiastic and imagninative enough as Mikael ;-) :

HTH
:) :)So Guys there is a progress. EcS v2 is installed. Here is HOW:
1. BIOS - COMPATIBILITY
2. My own values on preboot screen
3. At the end of phase1 (reboot delay 20s) - eject CD
4. Boot Manager - EcS (booting from HD) - inserting CD 1
5. My surprise boot continue
6. Choose options
7. phase 2 finished (repeat as phase 1)
8.reboot
9. finish installation
10. reboot ALL OK I am happy, very happy :D :D :D
Tried with AHCI - NO GO. Same as before - Dani and OS/2 cannot operate HD...
There is difference between R60 and L512 in AHCI implementation.
One more interesting think: with acpi enabled with SMP system shows 4 processors.
Pete: You are right. During last installation I change it to HPFS. Volume is compatible not LVM.
Next step is network. That I did not configure yet. I will do that at home.
Does Danis506.add support SATA drives?
:) :)Yes, but not in AHCI

Interestingly enough, I am working on installing Windows 7 x64 on an Asus KGPE-D16, and it will NOT install with ACHI enabled in the BIOS. The motherboard oddly comes with IDE mode enabled, and there are others who are having the same issue and citing crappy ACHI support.
Anyway, eCS v2 installed on the machine (figured I'd run a test), but though it recognized the CPUs (dual 8 core CPUs), enabling ACPI causes eCS to crash early in the boot process. Didn't have time to play with the config...

Hi Robert,
Please keep us posted on your success - I am interested in replacing my aging dual Opteron 244 system with one based on a ASUS KCMA-D8, AMD SR5650 (dual Sockel-C32, dual PC3-10667R reg ECC DDR3). Would be nice to know if ACPI.PSD or OS2APIC.PSD can handle dual multicore Opterons. The old workstation I run with OS2APIC.PSD. ACPI.PSD fails in SMP mode.

Sadly, the machine is on it's way to a customer, so I cannot do any more testing. The chipset on it is the same as the one I tested, so, theoretically, it will install with no issues, and it will boot with no issues... but ACPI/SMP support (without locking up)? Dunno. Coulda just been a few config tweaks or something.
I *WILL* be testing eCS v2 on one of our IBM eServer xSeries 440's soon to see if I can get the other CPUs recognized. Will keep you all posted on that. I have to configure one of the SMP backplanes first, and then try the install.
