Supporting thread for the libMTP Port and Implementation (http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14873/71/) bounty.
I have been discussing this issue on the eComStation newsportal, and here is some further information from that discussion.
Its not an application I seek (although an application that communicates over MTP to devices is most certainly welcome as well), I simply seek the integration of MTP/PTP, two common and up-coming device communication protocols into the operating system and WPS so that people can use whatever hardware they wish freely. At the least, I would say that it should be an option upon system install to select whether you would like libMTP/PTP support. I would say this belongs on the page with the drivers for USB/ACPI/VGA/IDE/PCMCIA or under the extra features or experimental features menus on the software install page.
I seek to port the libPTP/MTP binaries into eCS in such a way as their functioning is transparent to the end user. Ideally, as a system driver (like USB or other filesystem support) so that when said MTP/PTP devices are attatched, they show up in the drives object, or possibly mounted as a device on the WPS desktop. Include a tabbed journal for the libMTP/PTP implementation (possibly in the eCS kernel object? or is that too crowded already?) that would have all relevant settings and options for this driver, such as mounting behavior, etc. This way the user has control over how the devices are handled. Perhaps, if the user attatches a PTP camera, you could set up the driver so upon PTP attatch, cameraderie is launched. Something along those lines?
Okay, its small, but I want to get the ball rolling a little. So I have added a little cash to the pot. If anyone has any ideas/suggestions, Id love to hear them. Also, if possible, I would like to be as involved in the porting/creation process as possible, so yeah. :P
Thoughts or suggestions? Anyone? I would like eCS to have MTP/PTP support on the system level, I think its a worthy cause. Admittedly, I know little about the OS/2 operating system and porting/programming, so I am really interested in what people have to say.
Well, it would appear that I am alone in my "need" for proper syslevel MTP/PTP support in eCS. I will try and fund the project further, but Im probably just throwing cash down a well.
Request to moderator to remove this bounty and place my funds somewhere they can be used, maybe for the eComStation codec bounty? Or for general os2world use?
This bounty seems to have no interest, and I do not have enough cash at present to provide more funding and the money is wasted for this bounty.
Thanks!
Well, I've been following this thread with some interest; so before making any changes to the bounty I would like to ask if you know what the current status of the libMTP on other OS? Another thought would be if this bounty could be connected to other bounties or projects as well?
Well, libMTP is doing pretty well on other OS. It has a great range of compatible devices, most of all which function fully. The Zune (why I started this bounty, I am enamored with the Zune GUI and sound quality, its exceptional, please use one if you have yet to do so) is not fully supported yet, and they need more help to get that, but most Creative and Cowon and iRiver devices work, greatly expanding the range of devices one can own and operate with eCS and Linux or OSX. My problem is that I like the new range of devices coming out, but most, if not all, are MTP, because of any number of reasons, most probably because its more safe/secure than UMS, it allows for deeper device interactions, and it comes with a kit so the developers dont need to make their own drivers and stuff for the device, saving them great work and cost.

Without a proper MTP/PTP driver or program, ALL of those devices could not be used with eCS, and I see that as a great stumbling block in the progress and attractiveness of eCS. Also for me, a great limitation in usefullness.

Awesome :) Will do later tonight. The only MTP device I have (working) at the moment is my RCA lyra hc308. I have a Rio Karma and a Rio CE2100, but neither have functional drives to test them with.
How did you get it working? Did you fork from libMTP or something?
Tested it out with my RCA Lyra HC308, and sent you an email.
Excellent, already working pretty well :)
Emailed the libMTP people, hopefully mtp-sync will now be added as an official downstream option for libMTP. I will be contacting nickk to see whats new with development either this night or tomorrow.
Nickk has dropped the project, and this bounty is now dead.
