Title: Getting OS/2 network support back
Post by: Dave Palmer on 2007.10.05, 19:03:53
I am showing my software age and slow conversion to DSL and networks.

Since OS/2 2.1 I've been a dial up user.  Long ago I REM'd out the numerous config.sys statements recommended by many.

DSL finally became available in my rural area.  It easily installed on my wife's XP system.

So now I want to leap into the present and get ethernet support for my DSL modem with Qwest (a USA telco).

I have Warp with:
mpts 5.12 16 bit fixpack
tcp/ip 4.o application fixpak
warp 4 fixpak 15

At a minimum what statements do I need to 'un-REM' to get ethernet support back?

I've searched around and gone back in the archive and I still don't know the answer.

Any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards,
Dave

Do you have networking installed at all? If not, you can re-install it using the Networking Installation Tool...

OS/2 System -> System Setup -> Install/Remove -> Selective Install for Networking

Select the TCP/IP components, select "Automatically configure IP Address" (or similarly worded option to enable DHCP/DDNS), ensure you are selecting the correct network card (or select "No network adapter" if you aren't sure which is yours), run the installation (which will reboot your machine a few times... the first reboot may require you to CTRL-ALT-DEL the machine when it says "It is now safe to turn off your computer").

Once the install is complete, if you have not selected the network card during the install, you can now do so using MPTS... let me know if you need help with that...

-Robert,
Thank you for the help.

In order to sustain the DSL connection I had to relocate the modem into the garage.

I am awaiting a Buffalo Technology AirStation so that I can connect the NIC and go wireless.

When that is accomplished I'l share results.

Well, I am back and I really need help  ???

First the successes.  The Qwest supplied DSL modem - a 2701HG-D is working fine - with 2 XP systems - both using wireless.  One a Qwest supplied USB wireless device and the other (mine) using a DAVICOM 9102/A PCI Fast Ethernet connected to a Buffalo Wireless-G Ethernet Converter which wirelessly talks to the 2701HG-D - without the 2701HG-D knowing the difference - it appears as just another wireless gizmo.

The Qwest stuff worked right out of the box.  The DAVICOM and Buffalo took a lot of easter-egg hunting before they would connect with the Qwest modem.  I think it is something between the Buffalo and the Qwest box - but it works great - just couldn't find any documentation to help me out.

My system is primarily (95%) OS/2 - I  use XP for some VHS/DVD conversions, etc.  I have removable drive cartridges and swap between OS/2 and XP - everything stays identical (Windows walked all over OS/2 once, and I'll never go back to a dual boot system)

I want to get the DAVICOM/Buffalo working on OS/2 and that's where I am hurting.

1 - I tried the Selective Install for Networking and the reboot failed.  No way to determine why or how.

2 - Using the TCP/IP Configurator (LAN) I followed the suggestions in "Using a Cable or DSL Internet Connection in OS/2 Warp 4" By Dan Casey in January 2001 (http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0101H/vnewsf3.htm) and I'm stuck.  I also ran a MPTS session to get the DAVIS  driver installed - but I don't which protocol.

3 - No error msgs at boot time.  The DAVICOM driver loads and indicates it found the device.

4 - I've specified the specific IP address used in the successful XP runs and nothing happens - SYSINFO/2 shows the Locap IP and Local Mask and Gateway Address are not found.

5 - I've tried dynamic DHCP assignment and with DHCP assignment I get: "DHCPSTRT: DHCP client did not get parameters, continuing to trin in background" and two messages: SIOCADDRT: network is unreachable

6. Part of my problem(s) might be I don't know the protocol that that the Davcom device and TCP/IP use or need.

I figured out I am in way over my head.  Way, way over.

Right now I might as well throw darts at the wall - hoping to hit something that will make the software work.  In other words, I could sure use some suggestions, a rough road map, or anything else.

TIA,
Dave

Fools do get lucky  :D
One of my darts must have hit a lucky spot.

Right after writing my last note, I tried "one-more-time" and went back to the MPTS configuration step -aka Adapters and Protocol Services.

I noticed I had extra and invalid selections - 1 extra Null adapter and 2 protocols that some fool must have selected earlier.

I removed the null adapter and the 2 useless protocols and left the DAVICOM adapter and TCP/IP protocol, rebooted and everything worked.

FWIW I have a working 2WIRE 2701HG-D DSL Modem (provided by Qwest) , wirelessly talking to a Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet converter over a DAVICOM 9102/A PCI Ethernet Adapter using Warp4.

I've been in computers since installing an IBM 650 (2,000 word drum storage), - almost 50 years ago - and I can say, at 70, with some authority, documentation has never been worse, just like my skills......

Anyone else who wants to try Qwest DSL, I'll be happy to help.
