Title: QT 4.x framework Port
Post by: miturbide on 2008.01.07, 23:58:55

Supporting thread for the QT 4.x framework Port bounty (http://www.os2world.com/content/view/15988/71/).

There is a lot of silence about the Qt port.
As Nokia just changed the license model of Qt to LGPL I hope this will help to update the Qt 3.3.x Port to Qt 4.5.
Is there anything we can do to make this fly (beside the bounty?).

I actually don't know which compiler has been used in the past for Qt, but as Paul updated GC  to 4.3.x (seems to work quite good) and also OpenWatcom get's an update (1.8 rc2 is out) this might help to get some developers working on a new Qt version for OS/2.
There are a lot of applications using Qt so it would be great to get a new version of it.

Hi - there has been some discussion about this on IRC in #netlabs. A couple of us are interested in taking a look at it seeing how much of the os2-specific code from 3.3.x could be reused in a 4.x port.  I do plan on taking a look someday - just not sure exactly when... FYI I've used GCC 3.3.5 in the past to compile Qt - haven't tried it yet with a newer GCC.

On the subject of GCC - after spending countless hours trying to fix dllexport/dllimport with Seamonkey/Thunderbird, I think I'm finally getting close to a solution, then I might have some time to look at other things (like Qt).

Cheers,

Paul.

The Qt4 port is doing a lot of progress lately. Qmake is already ported and right now there is work done on the basic classes. The milestones set for the project are met till now. Look at the Qt4 Trac at netlabs,  there is the roadmap and the milestones shown ( http://svn.netlabs.org/qt4/roadmap ). If you want to see also the completed milestones enter: http://svn.netlabs.org/qt4/roadmap?show=all .

I'm very confident, that the project succeeds. But go get there we still need some sponsor units. To buy sponsor units please follow the link http://www.mensys.com/NetlabsQT4 .

To see the actual sponsored units look at http://qt.netlabs.org .

Many thanks to all who helped to get Qt4 reality.

does the Qt 4 Bounty make sense at all here? there is no money added to it and if people want to spend the QT 4 sponsor units at Mensys are the right way to go anyway.

what do you think?

Although I think the OS/2 World bounties make sense in several cases, I think it would be wiser to contribute to divers project, which already has gathered quite some momentum.

Just my 2 cents,

hopefully all of you are aware of the apps already working. see http://svn.netlabs.org.qt4 for some screenshots. under http://svn.netlabs.org/qtapps is a link to already ported apps. right now 2 games.

the direct link should be: ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/qtapps/qt4fun.zip

this will show the effort we do to bring this project along. more apps to come.

Hi!
I did try mentioned apps. Unfortunately none is working for me. I do run them (clicking icon or via command line) and ....nothing happens. I tried to copy dll's to ecs\os2\dll dir's... it didn't help.
There is mention in readme  about required fonts in c:\psfonts... - well, actually my boot disk is d: - so is there hardcoded path to c:\psfonts ? Is it why those games are not running? Any ideas?

yes exactly the c:\psfonts\... needs to exist.
otherwise you see the crash, like mentioned in the readme. this is a restriction of the current QT4 beta

Title: VLC port with Qt4
Post by: chennecke on 2009.10.02, 14:38:51
Hi,

I just found out that there is another very interesting apps that could be ported when Qt4 is available: VLC, the Video Lan player. Previously this would have neither been possible nor feasible because VLC used the WxWidgets GUI library, was rather clumsy to use, and had many security issues. But the developers have switched to Qt4 and have apparently improved the app across the board. What makes this interesting is the fact that it's not just a player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

The required libraries are listed here: http://wiki.videolan.org/Contrib_Status

there are plenty of interesting apps to port ;-)

but i can't state it enough i guess. first we need to finish the Qt4 port. And when ppl really look to the already sponsored units, we have a long way to go.

so please ppl try out what we have report possible bugs and send money.

I found this site.
http://www.qt-apps.org/ (http://www.qt-apps.org/)

It can help us knowing the posibilities of what can it be ported to OS/2 with QT4.
Thats why it is important to sponsor the QT4 port project.

It's important to finance QT 4.x, and I think people will spend money on things they understand, but a framework is not really that attractive to the end users who really have the money spend.

Some applications, like OpenOffice.org or PMMail/2 are generating significant income.

Is there some application that uses QT 4, and would be attractive to end users, that you can sell? Over time, that could finance development quite nicely.

I'm aware of other means to help finance QT 4, and I hope they come through.

Since Nokia are the owners an are developing QT 4 for several rather obscure handset OSs has anyone thought to ask them if they will help?

Title: Re: QT 4.x framework Port
Post by: diver on 2009.10.11, 16:30:47
I doubt Nokia would be of any help. But one can always try.

To Neil:
you are probably right about the attractivity of the framework. But the apps we port are of course atractive to most ppl i'd say.
But i don't want to charge money for apps i port, as all of them are opensource projects.

And if you look what we already ported, or whats in the works i'd say it very good. So if ppl don't spend money for the framework, there will be no more ported apps. And i think this would be a big loose.

Have anybody tried QT Creator for Windows ?
It is portable to eCS-OS2 ?

In the botton of this page there are the links to the source code:
http://qt.nokia.com/downloads/downloads#lgpl (http://qt.nokia.com/downloads/downloads#lgpl)

From that package I had tried QT Lingustic for Windows, it is a tool to help you translate some tools. I use it to help translating iTALC to spanish. But I think the interesting one will be QT Creator which is a development enviroment.

I enthusiastically agree that the apps you port are attractive. But I do not understand why you would not be willing to charge for an open-source program. Yes the source code is free, and anyone who can build the app can build it for free, but why not charge some reasonable amount to build it for them?

Many users have no idea how to build an open-source app. You are performing a valuable service and you should be compensated. Charging for your build of say Virtual Box, would be legal and I think also a good idea.
Title: Re: QT 4.x framework Port
Post by: chennecke on 2009.10.14, 13:56:04
I don't know if it's such a good idea. Look at how people react to the OpenOffice.org Service Agreement. They just won't stop whining about "having to pay for Open Source software" and accusing Mensys/SSI of violating the license. Well, yes, some have shut up after being told that they are free to get the source code -- which is available -- and build it themselves. But it seems that many are just biting the bullet because there is no alternative. Extending that model to other applications might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Sad but true.

Well, charging money for porting an open source software it is a service.  Sure people can charge for it. But according to the licensing rules they most release the source code.

And of course there are some open source license that allow you to sell the binary, but you have to release the source code. But in the long term selling the binaries is not a good business, since there can be another one to grab the source code compile it and give the binary for free.  That's why in the open source software business money  the most common way to make money is on services (Support and customization).

For example a tutorial of porting a simple QT aplication to eCS-OS2 so people can learn the basic stuff required.

problems are seen when compiling a app and needs to be fixed. usually all defs for win in Qt apps need to be enhanced to work also with OS2, but not all of course ;-)

it's not easy to give a tuturial. best is try it and ask if problems are around.

Hmm bit strange... for me it works just like windoze build of smplayer does. Movies play ok, subtitles are there, fonts look normal, icon themes work also.... I do wonder what's more needed to proof "the software actually works"? But hey! Still I prefer guiless mplayer....

Hi

I guess I should clarify that the qt4 builds of smplayer start video playback and then lose the video at about 4 seconds into playback.

That certainly does not qualify as "working" here.

Scibus: needs to be installed to the root og the drive; can be installed into a subdirectory but will not be able to find some of its files.

Lyx: you may want to check that you have gcc434.dll installed somewhere on the libpath.

Hi!
Thanks for hint about scribus. I'll try it as soon as I get to my ecs machine. As for Lyx - gcc434.dll is on the libpath.
As for smplayer issue... hmm, is it related to dvd playing? If so, I need to say I don't watch dvd's at all. Other videos behave normal. The thing that makes me nervous is problem with audio streams - internet radio that is. When I''m listening to audio streams and using other apps (in fact any) it has problem with priority I guess, and playback is jumpy. Pretty much annoying, unless it's exclusive task. But it is jumpy also on plain guiless mplayer ... so I can't tell it's smplayer issue.

cheers

Hi

The smplayer qt4 betas cannot play video clips without losing video - I have not bothered trying dvd playback at all as I tend to watch dvds using a much bigger screen with audio pumped through a surround sound system. Much more entertaining than using a 17" monitor and the tinny speakers attached to the computer :-)

That is similar to what I'm experiencing, although it occurs immediately here. What happens if you

- choose "Always" from the Video > Stay on top menu
- set the video output to "kva (slow)" or something like that

Could you try those seperately?

Could you please report the problem to Silvan with details about your system (OS, video driver, SMPlayer settings)?
Title: Re: QT 4.x framework Port

Hi

Using kva(slow) keeps the video playing - but it is far too jerky to be used for watching anything. This was reported to Silvan previously, within these forums.

I now find that I have no audio produced. Switching video output back to kva(faster) does not cure that so I'm not sure if that is a result of sacking acpi and reverting to os2apic recently. I doubt I'm interested in swapping back to a barely functioning acpi to find out.

I think you are using the wrong audio output setting. As I haven't installed SMPlayer I can't tell you where to set it exactly (maybe there is a setting to allow user-defined settings).

For audio you should be able to use "kai:dart" or "kai:uniaud".

For video you can choose between:
"kva:dive", "kva:snap" or "kva:wo"

Dive should always works, snap obviously only with SNAP installed (I'm not sure if a card supported by SNAP Overlay is needed) and wo is for WarpOverlay only.

All settings can also set in a global mplayer configuration (c:\home\default\.mplayer\config).
Title: Re: QT 4.x framework Port
Post by: Pete on 2010.01.26, 02:50:51
Hi magog

I think you have hit on the problem: The current mplayer uses kai:dart (or kai:uniaud) but the smplayer qt4 build does not offer those choices. The choice is "kai" or "user defined, dart"; not "kai:dart".

As mplayer works fine on the command line using ao=kai:dart in the mplayer config file I can only guess that smplayer is not offering the correct choices and the configuration value supplied by smplayer to mplayer overrides the mplayer configuration hence the missing audio.

Regards

Pete

And the answer to the missing sound with the smplayer qt4 build is to edit the %HOME%\.smplayer\smplayer.ini file to change this line
driver\ao=dart

driver\ao=kai:dart
