The Eur. .. .

Hence, the real reason behind MS public relations babbling of "Greater Openness."

You've got to give Microsoft credit for gall. They take a crunching defeat at the hands of the European Union court system for trying to conceal information and now that the court has forced them to reveal that same information, Microsoft is all about increasing "the openness of its products and drive greater interoperability, opportunity and choice for developers, partners, customers and competitors."

Thanks "El Vato"; I have had a brief look at the article at eWeek.com: "Microsoft Spins Legal Defeat into PR Fool`s Gold". http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Windows/Microsoft-spins-Legal-Defeat-into-PR-Fools-Gold/

However, as you know there are two sides to a coin; and, with our Russian colleagues blazing the trail in relation to; re: "ESWay-kernel:: Improvements in the nucleus / OS/2 Kernel Improvements:

Also, from the translation of one of the threads on that forum:

"Open the public, there is the kernel source code, or not? Вы не поверите, но судьбой OS/2 интересуются многие компании. You will not believe, but the fate of OS / 2, many companies are interested. Группа компаний Альфа, например. Alfa Group of companies, for example. Одни затраты на смену банкоматов огромные, да и, по сообщениям с мест, - глючат линуксовые банкоматы. Some of the cost of replacing the ATM enormous, and, according to reports from the field - buggy installed ATMs.
If there is a source (or perhaps vykupaemy reasonable for the business in terms of money), I can try to find and organize investor support and _ razrabotku_ kernel system with a normal (4 - valued x) salary for programmers. Of course, interested primarily in the nucleus redeem the property.
If there is no source, it is much harder, but the more you can organize a project to develop a nucleus with a "clean slate" on the basis of free micro kernel.
Perepolzanie business on Linux kernel is not interested in principle..."

The question that should be asked when one refers to the statement; "Microsoft is all about increasing "the openness of its products and drive greater interoperability, opportunity and choice for developers, partners, customers and competitors...."; is, What about the OS/2 World Foundation's Petition for IBM to more "open" with regards to OS/2.

Like a previous poster on this site's forum I join in applauding the achievement of our Russian colleagues with regards to their efforts in "Improvements in the nucleus / OS/2 Kernel Improvements".

Hopefully, in the not too distant future the OS/2 communities around the world will realize overall enhancements to our beloved Operating System.

Best regards.  ;)

OS2WF is a company (commercial entity) and thus cannot use any of the documentation MS claims they will provide for interoperability (Microsoft's requirements) - and so far, those documents are supposed to cover only a small subset of their product line - and nothing regarding the OS that isnt related. Additionally, (even if it covered the OS) it would leave massive holes where IBM did major rewrites of the OS/2 code for v2 and again in v3 and v4. And finally, sadly it does not cover issues IBM would have in getting releases (or removing code) that was licensed from others (companies other than MS), which accounts for as much - if not (after the v2/3/4 rewrites) far more code than MS has claim to.

Of course, what may be more helpful is MS's continued demise, which gives everyone else on the playing field an opportunity. Since it wont happen overnight, it gives the Voyager team, NetLabs, SSI, and various others more time to have something prepared and ready to compete in the market (for whatever market segment(s) are applicable).

Only time will tell. but fortunately, the definites are:

So, all in all... eCS and Linux and MacOSX are gaining potential every day that passes - and that may be the best "competition" and "help" from MS that we all can receive.

Even non-commercial work poses a risk because there's a chance it might eventually turn up in a commercial environment. "Keep all work that depends on these patents separate from other [open source software] work, to avoid exposing downstream developers and users to litigation risk," Gartner said. (http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206900525)

...so what is the real MS agenda, anyway ???

"The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between [MS]'s real and [MS]'s declared aims, [MS] turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink.

Just to make sure here, if OS2WF equals OS2 World Foundation - then OS2WF is not a company and we are registered in Sweden as a society with the Swedish IRS. Not being a company was due to that some parties that we have been in contact with earlier didn't like the idea of turning over code to a commercial entity.
