Title: Apps that support >2GB files? (Torrent, browser, etc)
Post by: RobertM on 2008.03.10, 23:33:40
Hey all,

Pertaining to software installed on JFS partitions, with all temp directories set to the JFS partition...

Does anyone know of a version of Zip.exe that supports >2GB files?

Does anyone know if Firefox (if so, which version) supports downloading >2GB files?

Does anyone know of any Torrent Software for OS/2 that will d/l large files? (greater than 2GB).

I've tried TorPak2.1 from Dink, but it stops at the 2GB mark and complains that the disk is full

Well, FireFTP does support downloading files that large (tried from FTPServer by Pete Moylan)... but I cannot seem to send files that large to FTPServer by Pete Moylan (the server thinks it is sending, but I get an error in FireFTP).

Any suggestions anyone?

  Robert,

You might want to try NcFTP and 7-Zip, both ported by Paul Smedley - http://os2ports.smedley.info. I have not tried >2GB files with these, so I don't know first hand if they work.

I have used ctorrent in the 'Tor' package available at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu to get >2GB torrents successfully. I have heard that ctorrent can have trouble with some torrents, though - YMMV. I have had no trouble myself.

Hi, Robert,
you might want to look at this thread (an issue apparently similar to yours):

http://fixunix.com/os2/42802-download-2g-files.html

Hope this helps...

I think Paul had a build of zip 3.0 that has large file support (>2G) but there was some issue with it dealing with recursion (I don't recall specifics but I think that in most cases it would not be run into).  I'm not sure if it was made generally available due to the issue though.
Mozilla has had large file support for quite awhile so any relatively recent version will certainly contain it.

Hey gang,

Thanks for all the info - looking into everything.

Here's what I have found...

If I get around to trying 7-Zip or NcFTP, I'll let you all know the results...

Thanks all,
Robert

CTorrent DNH221,   http://www.eros2.info/download/ctorrent-dnh221.zip  :

" Features

The purpose of the Enhanced CTorrent effort is to fix problems that
remain in the code, modernize existing features and algorithms, and
implement new features while maintaining low overhead requirements and
a high standard of performance (both part of the original CTorrent
design philosophy). Highlights of the enhanced client include:
     * Support for large files (>2GB) and large torrents (>255 files)
     * Strategic selection of pieces to request for download
     * Continuous queueing of download requests, tuned based on latency
       and throughput for each peer
     * Improved download performance, including parallel requests in
       initial and endgame modes
     * Improved bandwidth regulation
     * Improved compatibility with other peers
     * Performance optimization and bug fixes
     * An interface for monitoring and managing multiple clients"

dnh cTorrent 221 still have problems though... but not related to large files >2Gb but rather many files in the package.

It'll complain that there aint enough space left to download the hundred of files in the package and then stop download "temporarly" forever :-(

wrote eros2 about it and also asked if he can create a media download center, that is:

SOM folder class for various downloaders as plugins (dll's instead of executables) such as
CTorrent
WGet
Limewire
Live Multimedia Streams ( MMS, MP3/Shoutcast )
etc.

( should also be available as rexx extensions as well )

something like the link below should illustrate, but of course with more colours and fields etc.
but you'll get the idea.
