Title: Voice Type
Post by: klipp on 2008.04.26, 20:15:26
Is there a newer version of VoiceType available, other than whats on the Warp4 cd? Supposedly VoiceType is included with eCs, but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks   klipp

Its included in the 1.2r CD2, but I have not been able to get it to work at all.

Does anybody have this application working? It installs fine on eCs 1.2r & 2.0 rc4 but "craps out" trying to establish a session with the Speech Recognizer.  This software used to work well with Warp4.

AFAIK, its broken under eCS for whatever reason. I tried many, many times to get it working, but eventually just gave it up. I think this is a known issue with eCS.

It was one of my favorite app under Warp4. Once correctly trained, I was able to dictate with very few errors. But under eCS 1.x it didn't run, so I had to gave it up too. AFAIK, VoiceType doesn't work with the uniaud drivers (and possibly with sblive too, but I'm not 100% sure right now), and as uniaud is often the only driver one can install on recent hardware, that should be the reason why an increasing number of systems can't run this app anymore. Hopefully I'll find the docs where I read about this issue, so as to post some reference here, but I cannot guarantee.

Hey Blue Warper, Thanks for you're response. Do you possibly remember what sound card you were using back then? I've been trying to remember what I used  -- but to no avail! I just tried a system with SBLive installed and it failed the same way.  Hope you can find some documentation!

If you have an older motherboard with ISA slots, then get a Soundblaster AWE 32. I used one for 10 years unitl it died on me.  Plus you get sound back in your DOS sessions, and I never had problems with it.  Pick one up on eBay for $10 or less.

Thanks for the info Greggory, I do have a machine with ISA slots. Did you by any chance use it with any version of eCs?

Hi klipp!

I successfully used VoiceType on an IBM Aptiva equipped with an IBM MWave audio card (it was that time when IBM made PCs and wrote OS/2 drivers too...).  I seem to remember that on VoiceType manual the sample screenshots showed two cards on the settings notebook: IBM MWave and SoundBlaster 16.  So these ones should surely work.  But, generally speaking, I think that most audio cards worked correctly back in the Warp 4 years (if they came with OS/2 drivers...).  (And if you also need sound in your DOS sessions, then you may want to follow Greggory's suggestion).
I have a SBLive 5.1 Player on another PC, but I wasn't able to run VoiceType on it.  I use uniaud 1.1.4 RC1, but before I 'switched' to uniaud my driver was sblive08x.  I do remember I tried VoiceType with sblive08x driver, but can't remember if it did or did not work with this driver, sorry.
As for the docs, I really have no clue where to find them, but I DID read somewhere something related to an issue about VoiceType and uniaud drivers.  I'll do some more search...

Well, I just tried a machine that had ISA slots with a SoundBlaster 16 installed!  NoGo!  But the difference is I'm using eCs 2.0 rc4 rather than warp 4 or 4.5!  I guess now the next step is to figure out if any combination will work with eCs. It seems strange they would include this software in the eCs CD #2 if it would not work with the eCs operating system.
Thanks again for the help. I need this to work for a client with a handicapped little girl. And I have problems saying it won't work on eCs only Warp4. But installing Warp 4.5 and checking it out may be my only recourse.

OK, I found this discussion on the ('old') OS2world forum:
http://www.os2world.com/cgi-bin/ultraboard/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=59&TID=794&SID=

Maybe it's not a driver issue, but something apparently changed in eCS.  You could try installing on drive C: (provided you haven't done so yet), as suggested by RobertM in that discussion.  But another user ('boldos') reported a different experience (VoiceType won't work on eCS2.0x, with 1.2R being the last version where it would work).  I had VoiceType working on Warp4_FP15+IBM MWave+IBM drivers, and not working on eCS 1.x + SB Live 5.1 Player + uniaud (and possibly sblive08x too, though I cannot confirm this).  Also, the VoiceType shipped with eCS 1.0 came with some newer files than the original Warp4's VoiceType (IIRC, they were fixes related to LVM).  Maybe you're just missing them?
Title: Re: Voice Type
Post by: RobertM on 2008.04.29, 22:45:23
I have had success with VoiceType using every adapter I have tried.

The problems are as follows:

My Thinkpad laptop is using a Crystal Semiconductors BusinessAudio card and runs VoiceType flawlessly. I have also successfully (using above method) used VoiceType on Ensoniq and SB16 PNP and non-PNP cards (also using their native, non-UniAudio drivers).

I am wondering if your issue may be the sound card driver itself... are you using UniAudio or the card's OS/2 driver? I think one major change in later versions of eCS is that more sound cards are being supported via UniAudio instead of card-specific drivers...

Has anyone had success using VoiceType using the latest UniAudio?

As for running it in systems with two sound card - that I have never tried, but would love to when I get a chance.

Hey all,

As a side note, in the old Forums, I referenced an installation guide I had found that was extremely helpful (but did not post the link).

I've since found the link, which outlines each step needed to successfully install VoiceType on eCS and Warp 4.5:

http://www.os2usr.de/vt45.html

(and dont forget to Install VoiceType on Drive C).

As a side note, as far as I can recall, I have yet to install VoiceType on any eCS system (all have been Warp Server for eBusiness v4.52) - and if I am not correctly recalling that, then the last eCS version I tried this on was v1.1

Well, Using a new install of eCs-rc4 on the boot drive C: of a box with a SBLive soundcard installed and the fixpack installed (BTW the version of Voice Type on the eCs 1.2 CD2 does have the updated files!) it still fails the same way as I described above.
Looks like Voice Type is not usable with eCs.
I wish someone would prove me wrong!

Hi Robert! As my previous post states, On this test setup I'm using a SBLive sound card. I've also tried Using SB16 & Unaid.  At this point I really don't believe its a Soundcard problem, the error message remains the same (as described in one of the previous posts on this topic) reguardless of the soundcard being used. I now believe this has to be somethnig  related to eCs! (possibly LVM ??) -- I wish I knew!

thanks for you're interest

Hi klipp,

LVM isn't an issue. All my machines use LVM. You may wish to try Sander's SBLive081 driver (on Hobbes, if memory serves) and see if the results are the same. I have had odd problems with UniAudio and some apps (such as Ceres) - though BlueWarper seems to have gotten it working with UniAudio (wonder if something changed in the UniAudio driver since?).

The other problems I have seen arise are issues in the MMOS2.ini files - which I have found the easiest way to rectify them is to uninstall any and all sound cards MMOS2 thinks are installed, uninstall and reinstall MMOS2 and then sound card/driver support. That might work as VT will fail if when trying to determine what device it should be talking to, it reads the wrong information from the MM subsystem. And I have found that when playing with changing sound cards and/or drivers, the ini files get a bit messed up because of erroneous data left in them from uninstalling/reinstalling cards or drivers (though some things still work). Often it is as simple as a new, higher card ID is assigned to the newest card/driver instance installed (in which case, see the last paragraph below).

The only other thing I have seen cause it is if the sound card is already locked by something else running (audio player, some add-on, some extension to the WPS that locks it, etc). I have successfully tested it with NPSWPS, and Styler/2 and xWP without issue - but did have some other programs on autostart that would lock the sound card and create a similar issue with VT initialization.

You may also want to go into the VT settings (not sure where or how - my VT machine is at the house) and see what sound card index it is set to use - and play with that value... trying 0 or 1 or 2 sometimes works.

Robert

My son played a while ago with Voice Type and eCS1.1 or 1.2r on his Thinkpad. He managed to get it installed and it worked. I remember we messed around with the installation but can not remember what we have done. I've searched my prefered german os2 sites for infos about that, but didn't find it. I'm not even sure if he had a crystal chip in that thinkpad (was a R50e I think, which he does not have anymore), or if he used uniaud.

Sorry, this is no great help for this thread except the info, that it is doable with eCS (if my and my sons memory is not completly wrong, and yes, I've asked him about that too). I've not googled about this topic since this time. But somewhere out in the web, there should be the needed information.

Hi guys,

Can we confirm that the problems with VoiceType are only with Uniaud, and the problems do not occur with other drivers? I only skimmed this thread, but I did not see any post stating otherwise.

If it is a problem with Uniaud, it actually makes sense to me that this would be the case.

Those with SB Live, please try with the latest sbliveos2 driver you can find. If it works with that, it will be easier to get it working in Uniaud.

I'm not making any promises, and I probably won't get to it soon, but you got my attention.

Anyone interested in working on fixing it is invited to join the uniaud-dev list (see http://svn.netlabs.org/uniaud) to discuss it.

Thanks.

I'm glad to see more interest in getting Voice Type to work in eCs. --- obiwan, I have installed Voice Type on another machine with SBLive sound card and get the same results. I really don't believe now that its a problem with the sound card. The next thing I'm going to try is installing eCs 1.2r on this same machine with the SBLive card, in the boot drive C: and see if it will work, I don't believe it will!  Hope I'm wrong!
Like I've posted earlier, it installs fine, lets you set up a user, but then when the "check installation" is selected, it craps out with the message "Establishing a session with Speech Recignizer failed (rc=30). [chk2014]"
This is the message that I get on four different machines all using different sound cards & drivers.
It would help if there was any useful information available for describing the different error conditions that can occur. The "Help Files" in Voice Type are pathetic at best.

Thanks for the interest in trying to solve this problem and I'll get back with any new information I can uncover.

Hi all,

at first I was reluctant to enter this thread but now I think I can just let you know... just to clarify although I cannot provide in-depth details:

I remember that when eCS 1.2 GA was out, I had installed VoiceType from off the 1.0 CDs (iirc) plus the bugfixes and it worked flawlessly. All was installed to C:, the boot drive.
At that time, I was using a pci sound card with an "Aureal" (IIRC 8820, "Vortex-1") chipset that was NOT using uniaud drivers.
Please do not ask for details... it's been a long time ago and currently I'm lacking both time and equipment to give it another try - this was just to assure you that -YES- eCS and VT should work.

The only thing I have noticed is that if VoiceType is not installed on Drive C, it doesnt work. Even though everything seems to install properly. VoiceType isnt that big, so space requirements shouldnt be an issue (thus placing it elsewhere will not be that beneficial). I am not sure if earlier versions (ie: the one that came with Warp 4) would work if installed elsewhere - though it is possible - in which case, installing it onto something newer than Warp 4 onto something NOT Drive C appears to cause issues that were not present in the initial VT installer that came with Warp 4. That could simply be becuase the installation routines are somewhat different (one got installed via the OS/component installer, the other by the object installer after the fact).

Let us know if it works once installed on Drive C... and if anyone manages to get it working on another drive, please let us know. After many trials and errors (including re-installing MM and sound card support numerous times), someone else pointed out to me that I could keep trying as long as I wanted but VT would not run from anywhere BUT Drive C using the "after the fact" installation method.

I have never tried the program.  Based on what Thomas stated, I pulled out my old eCS 1.0 CD's and found VoiceType.  It installed without a problem.  I had to reboot to get the WPS objects to appear.  I installed it to drive F.  As near as I can tell, it works fine.  I get no errors messages.  Right now I don't have a mike to to start the training.

This is with the latest Uniaud driver on ecs 2.0 rc4.

I checked eCS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 CDs for VoiceType.  Only the eCS 1.0 CD had VoiceType. I did not check the eCS 1.0 Preview disks I have.

Hey David!! Thanks for you're reply! At least now we know two things. It will work with eCs 2.0 and it doesn't have to be installed on Boot Drive "C" anymore. I only have the version that was on the 1.2 CD#2 -- possibly thats the problem! WoW! I just dug up my old Warp 4 CD and the readme file verify's that VoiceType can be installed on drives other than "C".  I guess the next thing to try is installing the Warp 4 version of VoiceType in eCs-rc4 , problem is, I've forgotten how to install it from the Warp 4 CD.

This is true, and was my primary concern. I know I should be allowed access to it as I have access to it from my eCS 1.2MR CD2, but that version is apparently broken, and I don't have any of my WARP4 materials, just my WARP3 extras CD :C

I finally found VT on my eCS 1.2 CD.  I compared its directory structure to the one that came with eCS 1.0 and there is definitely a difference.  Also, it looks like the vt.cmd file is definitely different from eCS 1.0 vt.cmd file. The one in eCS 1.2 looks like it may be trying to do much more than version 1.0's cmd file. Possibly if you had your directory struction set up the same, had the same 'listing' files and  vt.cmd files from eCS 1.0, it would possibly install correctly.

I've tested this procedure on a couple of machines now and the following procedure seems to work with SBLive as well as Uniad and can be installed on partitions other than Boot drive "C".
1: Install VT from the eCS 1.2 CD#2
2: Reboot
3: Set up a user
Continuing now will cause the program to fail
4: Next delete these three directories (SPCH_BIN, SPCH_RO, & SPCH_RUN) from the VT directory created by the eCs 1.2 CD#2 install -- Do not delete the SPCH_BSF & SPCH_RW directories.
5: Copy these same three directories form the Warp 4 VT directory into the VT directory created by the eCs 1.2 CD#2
6: VT should now function without problems.
If someone could fill me in on the legalities of posting these three Warp 4 directories as a "Fix" for VT, I would be willing to post these directories on my web site as a download for people that do not have a Warp 4 CD. You cannot make VT function using these three directories without a Warp 4 or Ecs 1.2 CD#2, so I'm thinking that posting these directories  might possibly be acceptable .
However I would first like to hear other peopl's views first.

Installed the version from eCS 1.2R CD2 (VT US version) and copied files from orig Warp4 (US) CD and it works. All under eCS 2.0 RC4 and UniAudio (Intel integrated AC'97 Audio Controller on ThinkPad R51).

Getting VT to work on eCS is wonderful news!  I remind everybody that if you use VisProRexx to develop software, every VisPro Object (Button, Entry Field, Container, Entry Field, ...) is AUTOMATICALLY Voice-Type-enabled.  Just speak the button caption and it CLICKS THE BUTTON.

Speak the Entry field caption and the focus goes to that field.  It is wonderful.  Almost NO TRAINING is required.

I would be willing to help anyone with VisPro Rexx development.

Hi all,

something that came to my mind regarding this thread:

Lately, RobertM took the effort to compile a thread into a How-To article. (Thanks a lot BTW)
(see http://www.os2world.com/content/view/17999/2/ )

I'm wondering whether we should try to save the gained experiences from this thread into another such How-To article... what do you think?
Volunteers, anyone? I will not be able to do this before mid of June... so if someone else would like to jump in...

Hi,

IIRC the eCS version is nothing but the same version of Warp4 GA plus including the accumulated fixes.
I cannot tell if VT actually still is actively supported by IBM - but for the OS/2 | eCS version I doubt.
Also, I didn't use VT for more than 2 years now, so I might not be up to date anyway....

But looking at your question:
This is another reason for having a "How-To" summary on the topic. :)

Cheers,
Thomas

The VoiceType product has been dead for a long time. The sucessor called ViaVoice was only available for Windows. What from I've heard, recognition rates where quite improved even without training and adding new vocabulary was easier. It has been rumored that somewhere in a drawer at IBM, an OS/2 version lay around. But it never saw the light of day.

As for VoiceType, I had it working very well once on Warp 4, but then I didn't use it for a long time. When I did try it again on eCS, I couldn't get it to connect to the driver so to speak, i.e., the sound recording via the microphone didn't work correctly. All in all, the results heavily depend on the quality of both the hardware and the driver. Soundblaster cards didn't work well, but my trusty old Terratec 32/96 ISA card produced very good results.

I also wanted to have VT working in spanish. Is it possible to configure the VT version that comes with eCs 1.2R to make it work in spanish?. If not, does anybody know if the people at eCs can change my Us version that comes with eCs 1.2R, for a spanish version?.

Thank you.

Dear Serenity system and Mensys (Some of you must read this forum!!!),
the items in the forum pointed out the bugs and the way to workaround.
Why don't you add Voice Type in the 2.0 ecs release?.

PS:
Don't forget that the warp 4 Voice Type editions had different language releases.
