Title: SWT port image
Post by: lpino on 2008.05.29, 00:48:40
I have created an image of a working OS/2 with all the development environment of the SWT port, using VirtualPC. There were so many problems for people to recreate the necessary env. and I really need some help to put this port to work.

Anyone interested?.. I could supply all the additional information needed to bring people up to speed.

I finished all the simple controls, and I did some work on the Eclipse launcher (I can see the splash window.. so far), but I really need help to implement other controls like Tree, Table and Sash.

At this point you can create simple applications using SWT, but some controls lack advance features, like icons on menu items and lists.

The progress of the port can be found at: http://svn.netlabs.org/swt/timeline

Thanks

Leonardo

I may be able to help with the icons.  Is it icons or bmps you are going to need?  What will be the name of the control buttons that need icons?  If it is icons, what size(s)?

What differences would would it have made if this was a "native" port of SWT to the OS/2 Operating System; and, is a "native" port of SWT to the OS/2 Operating System quite possible to enable one to run applications such as Lotus Notes, Lotus Symphony et cetera, et cetera?

Thanks.

This is a native port. If you took the time to read, he is talking about distributing his VERY hard to put together SWT build environment so that there can be a working, native, SWT runtime in OS/2. He needs assistance in getting some classes working, and the easiest way to get assistance is to share his build environment in such a way that anyone can work on it from any computer, hence, the VirtualMachine image.

Well, this is a native port of SWT and as today "functional", in tthe sense that you can create SWT applications with it. In fact all the testcases are SWT applications, although very simple ones.

The goal is to complete the port at the level that is today. In my opinion, this is a very short and easy task (as long as you are a PM developer).

The hard part would be to bring the level of SWT up to at leats version 3.0 (the port is of version 2.01), not because it would be hard, but because it is a lot of code lines to write.

I'm not a PM programmer, and this port is the first time I have done work. I program in Java as a day to day job, but my C is rusty, my motivation to learn precompiler stuff is ZERO and my experience with JNI is this project. Still, I have done a lot of work and I don't want it to go down in history as an abandoned piece of software, so I keep working on it (as time permits). I know that if I knew more PM and I had more experience it wouldn't be hard to advance MUCH faster and I also know that there are people in our community that have those skills.

The idea of this image is to bring the port to anyone that wants to take a shot at it.

Hi,

if you are interested, I have a SWT 3.3 implementation for OS2. It has been done using Odin SDK, and it works for basic apps.
It took less than 2 days to compile win32 source code under os2 using gcc 3.3.5

The assumption is that this port of SWT to the OS/2-eCS Operating Systems then satisfy this limitation previously appearing in the Bounty System; re:

SWTSwing ($175)

Task: SWTSwing

Description: With this library it would be possible to get Java applications that use SWT (GUI framework) working on eCS and OS/2. Currently we don't have a native SWT implementation (but end of last year there was some small progress on it) and SWTSwing is using Java Swing as GUI framework that ships with every
Java Runtime Environment (JRE).

Currently SWTSwing only supports Java 1.5 and 1.6. As we only have Java 1.4.1 from GoldenCode and Java 1.4.2 from Innotek on the eCS and OS/2 platform it needs some work.
If SWTSwing can be made compatible with Java 1.4 -- and currently it looks that way -- we could use it.

Most applications that still use Java 1.4 and also use SWT as their GUI component would most likely work with SWTSwing "out of the box". Basically it would be changing the startup script to use the SWTSwing.jar file instead of the original SWT libs. Sometimes you need to removed the SWT libs from the original application jar and add the SWTSwing.jar! This is doable as a JAR file is nothing but a normal ZIP archive (with a different extension).

Other applications that already moved to Java 1.5 or Java 1.6 need some extra work to be compatible with Java 1.4! Some things can be made compatible using the Retroweaver tool you can find at sourceforge. The things that can't be made compatible that way need manual intervention.

SWTSwing is currently the only way to go and could even help the native SWT development....

http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14799/71/

Further, the question is: Are we on the "same page" (are we understanding the same things) in comparison with the earlier efforts of the porting of "SWTSwing" to OS/2 by "Juergen Ulbts".

Best regards.

SAB.

Que tal, Leonardo!

Assuming that there is no Odin code in your efforts, I would be interested in your work and ...sigh, although I am involved in too many things at the moment, I might even attempt to provide some feedback and possibly aggregate some on top of your efforts.

I, too, feel that --if your work is not Odin based-- OS/2 native code efforts should not to be wasted.  Please leave me a PM indicating what should I do to (hopefully) play with your work.

Best regards.

I was waiting for at least one person to show interest. Now I need a way to upload a large file so anyone can download it.

The fun part of this port is that is really fast (except on font handling), and you can do some interesting things with it, I believe is well architected and fun to play with. The biggest problem were the tools used. Java 1.3.1 + ant 1.5.4 + patch + VAC++ 4.0 + fixpack1 + Netbeans 5.0 as a IDE, althouh you can use any other way to edit the code.

Any ideas on how to upload 1.8Gb?

The hosting of the image would come secondary, the issue(s) that I perceive for the potential image hosting provider is the proprietary nature of the software bundled in the image.  Will the OS/2 image + VAC expose the hosting provider to potential legal action?  That is the question that nags me for a public access to the resource.

Hence the main reason that I insist on an open source OS/2 effort --I have created several VPC images of OS/2 versions from 2.11 to WSEB that I would love to disseminate freely and thus seed enthusiasm for the OS.

...in retrospect, I think that there are still many old school proprietary hard-coded mindset individuals in the OS/2 user base that run counter to the free and open flow of (OS/2 source) ideas; and hence they seem to be even glad that the previous petition to Big Blue was met with indifference.

[Afterthought]
If the OS/2 user base --and those organizations that support it present and past-- have the properties of an organic entity that strives to evolve, then, I can only see a brighter future for OS/2 when those old school parties simply are weaned from the OS/2 organism --effectively releasing the latter's dynamic inherent desire for (digital) individual life of its own...(hint ???)

Hasta luego...

What is the time line for the "weaning" of "those old school parties" from "the OS/2 organism"? I am not so sure about you... but, I personally wish that the "dynamic inherent desire for (digital) individual life of its own" for the "OS/2 organism" about which you speak about existed twenty or more years ago; and, this much I am personally prepared to have my company (as an IBM Business Partner and OS/2 VAR) participate in evolution of the "OS/2 Organism.

   1. Dedicate the following web sites presently under development to be that
       "potential image hosting provider".

       http://www.OrionResourcesIntl.com

       http://www.OrionEnterprises.com

   2. Work in close collaboration with individuals (or companies) like yourself for
dissemination of "VPC images of OS/2 versions from (Ver. 4.0, Ver. 4.5..) to
       WSEB".

Here is the rationale: These applications development were being awaited by our company in order to facilitate our proposed solutions offerings Lotus Notes Ver. 8.0, Lotus SameTime 8.0, Lotus Symphony.... which require SWT to run on OS/2.

How about letting us have your proposals for Consultancy/Collaborative Activities!

Game over.  ;D ;) ;D

Thanks in advance.  ;)

It cannot start programs like eclipse or azureus, but consider it took a couple of days to compile sources and create a native os2 dll. Jvm 1.5 or 1.4, it doesn't matter.

I understand Odin is not the preferred way, but it allows a really short development time. You can get sooner at latest level, and then you can inject support for native widgets in a second time.

Since only a few developers are active on OS/2, projects with less resource requirements are more interesting, and they are easier to put to GA level.

So, what if the adequate incentives schemes (Bounty Proposals, Development Resources, Maintenance Contracts et cetera et etcetera...) are offered (put in place) to attract the developers so that "projects" become more lucrative and the required "GA" Stages and Dates are quite easily achievable.

Okay! Since it is agreed that the current "Bounty System" that was thoughtfully established by the OS/2 World Foundation is a "very good" one to address these issues; and, looking back at some of the questions that were raised on this thread (and, may I suggest we shift this discussion to this thread that was created specifically for these kinds of discussions); maybe, the questions with regards to

can be addressed appropriately and is a very professional manner. (What are offers from the developers). ;)

I'm going to try to zip the file to see if there is any reduction on the size. To be honest with all of you, I have no worries about the software that is going to be distributed on that file and for two main reasons:

- It is no meant to be distributed or sold
- The software in it, for 99% of the world is abandonware and nobody gives a s... about it

(There are a LOT more reasons, but I'm going to stop there).

So from tonight (EST), it will be share as a file on my HD as a swtos2.zip file (I'm using Ares).

This is all very interesting, to come to light.

A lot of work here, but look at the potential.

I would set the priorities thus.

First, to get as much of this as is working, from a user standpoint, built and available for download and publicized, to attract attention and interest, so people get testing and hopefully willing to fix and contribute a little too.

Second, (sorry to say) some effort needs to be done to port this native SWT build to OpenWatcom, with some good makefiles (and perhaps a Netbeans or Eclipse project) to reproduce the build consistently. That's really the only effective way to facilitate collaboration well. The distribution of a whole OS and compiler in an image might help get this beyond a single developer, but it isn't a solution that will scale well in the medium and long term.

Third, the 3 known SWT solutions could be mixed. Requires some work, but would achieve the advantages that each has now, in a single package. As ydario pointed out, Odin gets it done quickly, so replacing the working Odin classes with native ones is a more fruitful process than working with nothing. The other reason for this is that the user and developer community is too small to support 3 fragmented implementations of the same thing. Users need a single download or they will choose one and be frustrated by its limitations and give up; and developers need to work from a single project base.

For those who find Odin or Swing too distasteful to even have present, it is much more prudent to make them a build option than maintain separate projects.

Of course, there is also the "fun" work of furthering this native SWT port, and that is what everyone has in mind, but that work will be made much smoother and more efficacious by these improvements to the development environment.

As for the OpenJDK source, it only becomes useful as we have a more complete Java setup, and a consistent way to build Java classes and tools from C, so it's interesting long-term, and pursuing a uniting effort in the way I am suggesting lays the foundation for everyone's efforts here to build on one another and move forward effectively toward that next level.

Actually there were people working on these issues and some progress was made. In fact if you go to the site of the project you will see a trunk created for this purpose (watcom + ant 7 + GC java 1.4.1). I couldn't help much on that front since I get zero motivation from configuration issues and I'm rather slow at it. Although I did set everything and did a couple of test.

I agree with you. My point as for now is to put this work on more people's hands and make it known. At one point I even uploaded the swt.dll to hobbes I think, but no one was putting any attention, or maybe (most probably), didn't get, what it was. Maybe I could package swt2049.dll + swt.jar and the testcases and upload that so people can play with it and discover a world of bugs and lacking features.

For people interested on the port, I have a blog where you can read stuff about the progress of the project, at: http://os2advocacy.blogspot.com/

From the experience of visiting the eclipse.org web site; and, the little interest (although I may be quite wrong about this) that has been shown since the last time I visited this site showing that there were no ongoing project for the porting of the "eclipse stack" to the OS/2 Operating System... I for one would appreciate it if the OS/2 World Foundation would (under the Main Menu) create an specific "Projects" link and have all the activities such as this one pertaining to the porting of SWT (or an eclipse port) to OS/2 "consolidated" at this location; if such a situation can exist then all the project information and development involving OS/2 (and, bordering on commercial and other usages) that is taking place could quite easily be accessed and made available to companies or individuals seeking such information and resources.

Just my two cents.

Kindest regards.

It would be helpful to get proper attention toward these laudable and hard-earned efforts to have information organized someplace, especially considering that http://eclipse.netlabs.org is somewhat incomplete these days.

One possibility is to add more info and links to the wiki on the SWT project site http://svn.netlabs.org/swt/ since that is where Leonardo is already working. If the parties involved agree, the Odin SWT port and the SWTSwing port could be imported to the Subversion repo.

One question: Why is it that it has taken this long to get to this stage where recommendations/suggestions are only now being made for more focusing of "attention" to "these laudable and hard-earned efforts"; still, it is better late than never; and, perhaps the "best is yet to come for OS/2" as here (link attached below) is yet another compelling application to be added to the list which can take advantage of the port of SWT to OS/2:

Quote

Lotus Notes and WebSphere Portal

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/portal/notesandportal/

So, now we have these compelling "IBM Lotus Applications" (which are co-incidentally built on the Eclipse Framework) and will be depending on the SWT port to run on OS/2; and, these are as follows: Lotus Notes 8.0, Lotus SameTime 8.0 (Instant Messaging), Lotus Symphony....

Still, one more question: Are OS/2 Developers short-changing themselves and others ("leaving money on the table") in the world around them when it comes to the promotion of their "hard-earned efforts" and making available in a timely manner... "software products for OS/2"?  ??? ::) 8)

I can't find it with Ares search.

Hi "Leonardo";

Do you have a GA Date for SWT for OS/2? If not, what is the earliest that one can attempt to run Lotus Symphony 1.0 (now GA) on OS/2 using your port of SWT for OS/2?.

Hi "Leonardo";

Do you have a GA Date for SWT for OS/2? If not, what is the earliest that one can attempt to run Lotus Symphony 1.0 (now GA) on OS/2 using your port of SWT for OS/2?.

Re: No, there is no date,, in fact we are far from one. As I mentioned before, the port is incomplete and my skills to finish it are simply not there. Besides, the port it is from a very old version of SWT and probably Symphony is using a SWT v3.x

The road map ahead is uncertain. It depends on my time and other people joining the effort. Today "most" of the controls and dialogs are implemented.
We should first finish the remaining controls and complete the ones we already have. Then we should try to start Eclipse 2.01 using the port.

After that we have many choices:

- Change tools and then go for updated versions of SWT
- Go for the updated versions of SWT and move to newer, "better" tools as we go along
- Go for version 2.1 on the old tools and to version 3.x on newer tools

So you see, there are lots of things to do, just not enough hands

So,from the foregoing... can you give an indication as to what would be the compelling business case(s) (bankable ones, defect support for SWT for OS/2...) that would see the kinds of commitments that can be ascribed to development activities involving the Windows, Linux, OSX.... Operating Systems.

Thank you.

I guess I'm missing where Leonardo's efforts on porting SWT to OS/2 became a business operation. To put Sarbox in a better perspective, it is concerning accounting fraud. I missed the part where this applies. (I also fail to see where accounting fraud is equivalent to financial misfortune due to a natural disaster.)

As far as raising venture capital or making a business case for porting SWT to OS/2, it could just be that Leonardo or others don't have the time or interest in doing the work involved in such an operation, or they don't believe a business case exists. Maybe someone else needs to do that work and then look to hire some OS/2 developers.

I take it that you have not taken a look at the "Bounty System" currently in place on this web site; and, which is being administered by members of the OS/2 World Foundation. The last time this discussion came up (to the best of my knowledge) was for OS/2 developers to indicate what will be adequate "sums" to entice them in taking up an associated "bid".

Personally, I think that the "ball" is in the OS/2 Developer's court with regards to these and other issues related to the porting of applications to OS/2 and thus the emergence of business scenarios like these as follows!

I really meant to say that that this is the "potential"; and, in any case what does it really matter... Here is what a financial institution official had to say from the below referenced link:

Quote

"We believe that there is a lot of entrepreneurship in Guyana but not a lot of them have approached us for financing and for those who approach their business plan [lacks details]," he said.

He said that the client base is not as high as he would like it to be, but on an annual basis he would be happy to have 10 to 15 clients. He said that based on projections, "we are below that and we want to accelerate the pace."

http://www.stabroeknews.com/?p=14471

Now, multiply "10 to 15 clients" by 34 countries and you get 340 to 510 clients and so on; and, so on.

You get the picture!  ;)

BTW, I can quote some IBMers as making remarks only yesterday at a financial seminar here in New York City that there is a general feeling that OS/2 is on its way back and that banks in France as well as in other countries in Europe still use OS/2 and no considerations are being given to move to another platform.  ;)

All FYI.

My considered opinion is that with an application such as IBM's Lotus Symphony 1.0 now Generally Available (GA) and is based on the Open Document Format (ODF) Standards then attracting developers and testers to a project such as the Porting of SWT to the OS/2 Warp Operating System ought to be a none issue: re: the IBM's Servicing Offerings to businesses as an example. $$$  ;) ::) ;D

This is just my two cents.

Why not upload to Netlabs Incoming.  Also, you need a naming format that lets people know they have the latest code.

Example:

Rename swtos2.zip to swtos2_20080619.zip

Unless Adrian is told what to do with it, it usually stays in the incoming directory.  When you are ready to have it deleted, just rename adding deleteme to the end.  Sooner or later, it will be deleted.  If not, you can always contact Arian and tell him to delete it.

Hi "abwillis",

As far as I can remember; and, as was earlier stated in this thread... this was a "native" port of SWT to the OS/2 Operating System; so, I believe that this may be one of the reasons (perhaps) that you cannot get it to run "under Odin".  ::)

Not surprised Ab, Odin isn't very functional. If you have a working windows install try to download the stuff there and then let eCS work with it.

Guys, don't get confused. DIINO it's a internet service to upload up to 2Gb for free on the Web. To use the service you need a client (a Windows software that has nothing to do with SWT or ODIN). You have to be running under Windows to run this client. Once you have it install under Windows you register on their web site and then you go and find the file I shared and download it. All of this under Windows...

After you download it the file, you unzip it and you will get a hard disk image I created using VirtualPC (under Windows v.7 I think). Now, I don't know if the image will work under VirtualPC for OS/2. Once you fire up the image (using VirtualPC 7, under Windows, a free download) you will get an OS/2 system with all the needed environment to develop the native port of SWT, meaning VAC++ 4.0, Java 1.3.1 ... etc.

I can give any support once somebody has the image working on you computers.

I hope this clears up the plan.

Thank you

PS. You can always try to run the client of DIINO under ODIN and then try to run the image under VirtualPC for OS/2, but that's not the way I intended to work, although it may. The idea was to distribute an image of OS/2 so anybody (that has Windows and VirtualPC) can work on it.

When will OS/2 developers see the justification of creating a "single source" like that of the OS/2 World Foundation or the NetLabs sites for all (or most of the development projects related to OS/2); and, for these to be undertaken in a very professional manner (not in a piecemeal way) second to none.

The SWT port is part of Netlabs the source is up to date and maintained (http://svn.netlabs.org/swt) and if you had VAC++ 4.0, you could just connect to the Subversion repository and download the damn thing and you can join the project.

The problem seems to be the availability of VAC++ 4.0. That's why I created the image, to distribute the whole thing. If you don't like it, get a copy of VAC++ install it on your OS/2, install SmartSVN, download the sources, read the docs and begin to help... very simple.

I need help to finish the project, it's almost there, but I can't make everybody happy and I can do so much to bring the project to people.

Here is a strategy that I do understand; and, why:

Quote

The SWT port is part of Netlabs the source is up to date and maintained (http://svn.netlabs.org/swt)

Eclipse Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT)

    * SWT is part of the Eclipse Platform Components
    * http://www.eclipse.org/swt/
    * Information about the CVS access of the main SWT development line can be found at the Eclipse Wiki
      http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/CVS_Howto

Now, take a look at the releases:

Quote

Stable
Windows, Linux, OS X, more...
3.3.2 Final Release - 22 February 2008

    * 3.3 Development Plan
    * New and Noteworthy
    * Language Pack

Development
Windows, Linux, OS X, more...
3.4 RC3 - 31 May 2008

    * 3.4 Development Plan
    * New and Noteworthy

http://www.eclipse.org/swt/

So, where are the releases for OS/2 (like there are for "Windows, Linux, OS X, more..." on this Eclipse site???  ???

I'm going to upload the file again tonight.

Thanks

Leonardo,

The new file swtos2_20080618.zip is also corrupt.
I did a binary file compare and it's exactly the same as the old swtos2.zip file.

Could you check your local zipfile on your PC ?
Could you create a new zipfile and upload it again if it turns out that your local zipfile is bad ?

Thanks,
Michel

Darn!.... I hate this s....!. I checked the file and it's ok on my disk. There must be a configuration somewhere on the way you transmit files, maybe BIN or ASCII mode or something like that.

I'm pretty lost right now. I'll have to think of something else.

Thanks

I don't think that there's a configuration problem because I was able to extract the VMC file.

There are 2 options :
1. There's a problem in DIINO's upload or download protocol and then we should report this to DIINO.
2. There's a compatiblity issue in my our your zip tool.
Which tool do you use to create the zipfile ? I'm using WinZip 11.0 to extract the files.

Thanks

I used the Windows crap (ZIP support), that comes with XP. I was able un unzip the files using the same crap. I haven't try with Winzip. Maybe I will tonight.

Thanks for the feedback

Actually, I find the XP zip folder feature handy to be able to work within zips without having to extract first. Also, the libary provider seems pretty legit: http://www.innermedia.com/

So I'm not exactly sure what makes it crap, but hey.

We all know what they say about "a bad worker"; he "quarrels with........."  ;); but, then again, (if this project is really worth the efforts...; and, also really mean something to people) I still cannot understand why efforts are not being made to to have the file uploaded to this site:

Quotehttp://www.eclipse.org/swt/

like all the others have been.  ::) :o ::)

There is a saying that "good things come to those who wait"; but, can OS/2 users continue to wait - forever!  8)

Leonard, are you using Wireless to upload the file? You could be having some packet-loss that way if so.

Ok, I created a new file using Winzip 11.1. I'm going to upload it tonight. It is updated and includes the SmartSVN project, so one can just work on the project and commit changes directly from the trunk on the local file system to Netlabs SVN.

In fact I'm using a WIFI connection, but it's the only one I have, so if I'm loosing packets,, we are f..ed

Thanks

How so, when you can just burn the files to a CD and mail the damn thing to some like "Kim Haverblad", (or someone else at the OS/2 World Foundation), "Saijin_Naib"... who would then upload it to wherever...! ???

Just my two cents.

I wouldn't be adverse to that if it becomes necessary. Leonard, what ISP are you using? I have heard that many are interfering with p2p protocols by inserting garbage packets causing corruption of incoming/outgoing data. Perhaps your ISP is attacking the upload to DIINO using this method, though it would be a mistaken attack in this instance.

Alternatively, how about copying the files to USB Sticks and mailing them out to interested testers/parties?

Don't you think thats a large expense for Leonard to undertake on his own? Lets keep this in channels that will not necessitate the spending of money by any parties.

The fact that there were two particular bounties posted here: (1) Native port of SWT to OS/2; and, (2) Port of Lotus Notes 8.0 to OS/2. So, how about having the OS/2 World Foundation picking up the tabs for this part/aspect of the project.

And, the gut feeling is - watch how quickly the "donations" roll in behind this native port of SWT to OS/2... once the request is made.  ;)

Best regards.

After a lot of thought I came to the conclusion that a better alternative to send the whole image will be to work on the branch for a OpenWatcom version. Work was started by Lee last year. I wasn't very into helping him at the time, since there was so much else to do and I had a working environment.

Now I reached a point where I can't move forward without  help and so doing a port in a free compiler sounds like it will help people to jump in ( :-\ ). Anyway, I tried to follow Lee's instruction and I was able to compile the sources using Java 1.4.1 GC for the Java code and OpenWatcom for the C stuff. I know Java 141 GC is not free, but that's an issue a lot easier to deal with than VAC++ 4.0

So there you have it, you can download the sources from Netlabs SVN and then at my blog I can help anyone that wants help.

Also I'll be checking out the possibility of being part of the Eclipse.org and committing the work there, that way we "maybe2 we can get help from the eclipse community.

PS. My blog is at: http://os2advocacy.blogspot.com/
PS2. I'm not doing this for money or the bounty or a business case, I do it because is fun and because I like OS/2 and Java, that's it

Hi,

I'm busy on other things now, so I made available for download my test build of swt 3.3.4.9 with odin sdk:

http://web.os2power.com/download/swt-332.zip (6.5MB)

the zip includes swt.jar and full source code. To rebuild you need odin sdk tree and gcc 3.3.5.
This build is tested only against my personal Odin build tree, and surely it crashes when handling bmp images (here I have hacked gdi32 to not use memory mapping for reading files).

I'm not going to work on  it in the short time, but if someone wants to build it, I'll reply here.

I think that this strategy is a very wise move.  ;)
