Title: Question about WSEB, fixpacks and CP1 and CP2 versions
Post by: oldbeagle on 2008.08.22, 04:00:33
All these OS2 variants are confounding me. Warp server 4, WSEB, and CP1, CP2, MCP and ACP have got me all confused!

I have an IBM netfinity running WSEB FP3 that works flawlessly although I think I did have to perform a minor file update on some main file. Networking and USB work, and both CPUs are utilized.

Just recently, I set up a new array on the same server and installed v4.52 (aka CP2?) I'm having some problems with the WPS locking up when connected and browsing a windows share, and only one CPU is being used. Are there any available fixpaks or updates for 4.52?  In the past, I think I stumbled upon a patch to enable SMP support and some OS/2 kernel updates, but at this point I'm totally confused.

Hi oldbeagle,

I am in agreement with you in certain respects; and, its not that the simple solution should be - "One Size Fits All"... but in essence - users should most obviously (ideally) be focusing on the tasks at hand rather that focusing on what is the most appropriate of "these OS2 variants" they need in order to complete their tasks. I believe just three iterations of the OS/2 Operating Systems might do the "trick" as well as provide the OS/2 communities around the world with a better alternative to Windows than Linux. ;D ;D 8)

Hi DB,

To enable SMP, WSeB had an option on one of the configuration pages (at the bottom). Enabling it is as simple as clicking that option during install. You should still be able to run the Selective Installer to install the SMP components from the CD. Insert the CD, run the Selective Installer, and select SMP. Let it install, and that should be it. No fixpacks should be necessary as long as it is truly WSeB you installed (regardless of whether it is CP1 or CP2 or CP2 PF). Now... if you installed from the client disk by accident (which came with the WSeB disks) then it does not have the SMP option. There are tools online (I believe there is one on Hobbes) that will allow you to turn MCP (the client install) into SMP.

On the Netfinity, it should have been the default selected action... When the machine boots up, and the OS/2 Boot Logo/Splash Screen is on the monitor, what version kernel does it say you are running? It should be on the bottom left... something like 14.083_SMP or 14.083_UNI or 14.089_SMP, etc.

Also, does the boot logo say OS/2 Warp 4 or OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business?

Robert

SAB,

They are not variants. They are new releases:

The notable client releases:
OS/2 2.0
OS/2 2.1
OS/2 2.11
OS/2 Warp 3
OS/2 Warp 4
OS/2 Warp 4.51 (CP1)
OS/2 Warp 4.52 (CP2)
eComStation 1.0
eComStation 1.1
eComStation 1.2/eComStation 1.2MR
eComStation 2.0 (pending release in 2 months)

The notable server releases:
OS/2 Warp Server 4 and Warp Server 4 Advanced SMP (based off LanMan 4 and Warp 3)
OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business 4.51 (CP1)
OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business 4.52 (CP2)
OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business PF 4.52 (CP2 PF)

There's nothing abnormal about it... new releases happen in the software industry. They arent variants... there have been 2 (or three if you count WS3 Advanced SMP) releases at any given time. Client and Server.

What ever your interpretation of my use of the word(s) "variants... (iterations) the intention ought to be quite clear what was really meant to be said; and, that was (in this context) in relation to all the different Windows and  Linux releases over the years; and, it is quite certain that although Vista is the latest Windows Release from the Microsoft Corporation some folks still use the DOS Program and Applications to complete their "various" tasks.

BTW, in as much as you have mentioned - "eComStation 2.0 (pending release in 2 months); just what are your arguments for the implementation of an "iteration" of an Operating System which has not has a "Kernel" Update for the "last ten or so years"; combine this with all the known Linux Updates and Distributions.... along with all of the Windows Updates and we still will find a list of limitations (including that of the lack of an 64-Bit Kernel in the case of OS/2-eCS) even as mankind (in a few years time) heads for the Moon - Again.

Quote

Space junkies ask 'who owns the moon?'

Within the next 10 years, the U.S., China, Israel, and a host of private companies plan to set up camp on the moon. So if and when they plant a flag, does that give them property rights?

A NASA working group hosted a discussion this week to ask: who owns the moon? The answer, of course, is no one. The Outer Space Treaty, the international law signed by more than 100 countries, states that the moon and other celestial bodies are the province of all mankind. No doubt that would irk all of the people throughout the ages, like monks from the Middle Ages, who have tried to claim the moon was theirs.

But ownership is different from property rights. People who rent apartments, for example, don't own where they live, but they still hold rights. So with all of the upcoming missions to visit the moon and beyond, space industry thought leaders are seriously asking themselves how to deal with a potential land rush, cowboy-style.

Thus, anyway you try to put it, the - "One Cap Fits All Concept" when it comes to finding that ideal Operating System will continue to be like finding that "mirage" in the desert.  8)

Perhaps, this may happen until the next 5 - 10 years or so. Until then, it may be a good thing to place some trust (hope) in the "Development Continuum" where the OS/2-eComStation Platform is concerned. ;)

SAB

SAB:

I'm sorry, but nothing you said made any sense.

First, whatever you want to call it, each item is a new release.

Second, you made it sound like they were competing versions - instead of new releases.

Third, OS/2 has exactly the correct number of variants... a server version and a client version - with whatever features you dont want being easily disableable (unlike 7 versions of Vista Client, and multiple server versions).

Fourth, the kernel was updated far more recently than you imply - your lack of knowledge in that area notwithstanding.

Fourth (Part 2), a 64bit kernel is not needed for a kernel update. Just think of how "amazing" performance and usefulness is on the 64bit versions of Windows (oh, wait... there is no use to it).

And Fifth (and most important), what the heck does any of this have to do with the original poster's question? STOP TURNING EVERY THREAD INTO AN "eCS IS DOOMED WITHOUT 64BIT KERNEL" or "eCS IS DOOMED WITHOUT THE SOFTWARE I AM CLAIMING I AM PORTING (BUT NOT) TO OS/2"

Really, it's about time. Start posting in the correct threads when you want to post about those topics. The only reason I even chose to respond to this one was to clear up misconceptions you created for the original poster as they were applicable to his question.

First of all it is quite interesting that you could not have ignored some of what was said by me; and, in the same breath completely ignored some other things; and, if over the years close enough attention was not paid to the development of the Operating System where OS/2 is concerned then the IBM Response Letter to the OS/2 World Foundation (once again repeated) which in part reads:

Quote
IBM has service offerings that continue to be available for customers who need ongoing support for OS/2, although IBM has no plans for product enhancements.

would have been more than enough to be taken to the "bank" without your recommendations (not what you are saying) which is in response to your

Of particular interest was:

Are there recent updates to the "OS/2 Kernel....." that the rest of the world (including myself) do not know about. And, to come to think about it all it is still a wonder as to why (above all else)

IBM (had/got nothing to do with me) has recommended that customers on OS/2 consider migration to alternative solution offerings, and has a broad array of software assets and services to help customers migrate. We would like to ask you to encourage any customers who are still planning their migrations or who have other technical requirements to contact their IBM representative to discuss how these assets and services could be leveraged.

Well, the Clinton Administration a few years ago during their election campaign said it best; but, hopefully we may all be around for a few more years to witness the colonization of "space" (as if this will not have nothing to do with economics).  ???

I am (and, I believe that you are also) quite aware that the Summer Games are well underway I am not here for the sake of scoring match points; but, if the state of U.S. Economy is to be taken as the "yardstick" then what other references do I need; besides, we all do know the locations of the "decision-makers" (OEMs and all) among which "you" (assumed) nor "I" cannot claim membership.

as members we are all important, even though oure point of veiw is protracted  and somewhat tainted by what others inject here and there, i gets watered down, the point that is, but that is part of the problem, it all lends itself to the solution, it being IT of course...Information is the solvent that fuels the mind, strike a matche to it once and awhile and as it all appears to go up in flames, someone else is building a new furnace.

Hey ModZilla,

"as members" of - The OS/2 World Foundation, The OS/XXX World Alliance, The Milky Way Trekies, The Inter-Galactic Federation.... Which of these?  ;D ::) ;D

Now for the "fixpacks".....

...a little confusing as it is/can be on this thread, what fixpacks were generated before the end of '05, ie the end of the product line: fp15, 16 or? AND with that Event [ and the state of the fixpack releases being what they in effect accomplished ] what is the point of buying eCS when its a clone and on the welcome screen it doesnt say OS/2 anything... ???

Perhaps, things get "a little confusing" where there are no "clear cut information/details" available to would be OS/2-eCS Developers and Users alike. Would be nice to be able to "drill down" to the "root of the assumed confusion" and make your way back to the future from there.  :)

But then again - what are the "very clear" objectives of doing so!
