Title: The New Hobbes
Post by: Ben on 2008.09.06, 17:28:26
Greetings.

Is it just me? or is the new Hobbes having some teething problems?

Downloading doesn't seem to be an option any more, which is, to say the least, self-defeating for a file repository.

I suspect it will be straightened out soon, but in the mean time it's a pain.

I can get access to most of the main repository, but \incoming is locked up small and tight, via http or ftp.

Of course, the \Incoming directory is the where most the of action takes place, and it cripples Hobbes' usefulness if that directory is unavailable and files not quickly stored away.

There has been some chatter about this and I believe an E-mail or two has been sent off, but still, the situation persists.

I do hope this isn't a permanent "fix".

Is anyone else having \incoming download problems?

I noticed problems too. I get function call errors on half the pages I try and go to. I also agree that if the incoming directory is not working it's pretty much useless.

I too find it impossible to download from at present.   I will just keep hoping.  I was being asked for a password at one stage but I am not sure whether that was Hobbes or Firefox 3.1 (?). Anyway Keep hoping!!

I will add 'me too' and say I've sent a couple of e-mails as well but got no reply - not even an automated one.

There is also some strange things happening if you go to /new from /incoming.

At the moment I give them the benefit of the doubt, after all it has only been up for 6 days and I assume there are more pressing things to attend to (assuming school starts around now over there).

It seems they have disabled the ability to download from incoming, but once processed then I can download.  HTTP download does not require a password.  FTP download asks for userid/password (anonymous and password).  Please, for any issues you do see, send a courteous note to the maintainer (email at the bottom of the pages).

I know this topic is ancient... but I ran across it while doing some other work.

I decided to send them a note today. One long overdue from me. A thank you - for their years of being an important part of the OS/2 community.

Best,
Rob

I think you have misunderstood things a bit, the old hobbes has been going 20 years, the new hobbes they were discussing was an initiative funded by quite substantial public donations and run by the guy behind os2ecs.org but has never worked AFAIK

It is supposed to be here :

os2ecs.org/hobbes/

And it was initially started in response to the by now regular requests from the old hobbes for "2000 USD per year" or we close down.

Hmmm... I thought the "New Hobbes" referred to the software/platform changes that took place when this thread was created, that is currently running at http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/

When it was first rolled out, it was kinda buggy and exhibitted the problems mentioned below. Maybe you are confusing the two issues... or maybe I am.  ;)

Hi Robert,

You have it right, "oli" seems to have some mis-information. Hobbes never stated that it would close down, they just said that without donations that it would die a slow death :-)

The donations that did pour in enabled it to be relocated to a new server, and a rewrite of the interface and backend.

http://hobbes2.nmsu.edu/ = Hobbes 2, which is the new server, and http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/ was the old server, both URL's now point to the same 'new' server.

os2ecs.org just confused a few people even more, as well as duplicated what limited resources the OS/2 - eCS community already has.

Cheers

I don't think there are regular requests. There was one request for money for a new machine. They got the money. They are done asking. Maybe next time they need a machine, they'll ask again.

Now if you gave, then UNM will ask again, but that is UNM, not Hobbes.

Why do you guys put "Oli" in parenthesis? I have been chatting to you mr. Manners on and off for what, 15 years on the net, no need to be paranoid, I am not Dr. Tim Martin at Warpcity.com

2006 : "It's April, and HOBBES could use another Donation..."

similar emails were sent out in April 2004, December same year, and in Jan/feb the 2005, July 2001, and at the least once before, which in turn clashed with the following message from the original maintainer in 2005, that appears to state that there had be none, the conflicting info was enough to keep me away from donating to either the os2ecs new hobbes or the NMSU new hobbes

The other donation running at the same timeframe (mid 2005), I seem to recall a post were they claimed to have got at the least 25xx or 35xx USD and they print a list of donors on their page, perhaps some people got confused as to which project they were donating to? :

Oli,

Your post is entirely irrelevant and off base. THIS discussion was about some bugs in the new platform that Hobbes switched to a short while back. MY comment was that regardless, I sent them my thanks - for decades worth of helping the OS/2 community - which cannot be wiped away even if they dissappear tonight.

Thus, your post doesnt in any way fit into this topic, does it? It's also more based on your feelings on (an/the entirely irrelevant) matter. If you want to bash, malign or just grump about Hobbes and a 3 year old email - feel free to do so: elsewhere.

Really. This thread is simply "Hobbes' new software setup was having problem" "Well, on the note of contacting them, I have finally sent out a thank you for their years of dedication and work"

Hi Ólafur,

Apologies, putting Oli in quotes wasn't meant to be negative or derogatory, just a way of referring to what you said.
I also didn't know who I was referring.

Relax, no need to get emotional, why is everyone so paranoid these days, you are reading far too much into what I said, I was just explaining why I mixed the 2 up and in response to blondguy that I have had multipile requests for financial donations to hobbes and have have thus kept off the hobbes issue for years, I had no idea that there where more than one new hobbes. Chill

No apologies needed, it was just weird to look at, anyhow I have always meant to send you a note thanking you for keeping the OS2site going all these years, has saved my behind quite a few times, since you are here might just as well do it now

And since I am already off topic, I ported CSOUND to OS/2 a few years back since a the time I did not have a Windows PC, any point in releasing it ?

Is anyone using ecs for music creation these days ?

While it might not solve the problem; but I assume the existing mirrors would solve the issue to download (if they're still able to mirror the site); I usually make use of the mirror at Sunet.se -> http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/OS2/hobbes/ (http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/os/OS2/hobbes/)

I do off and on, and play with Ceres Sound Studio (but get mixed results when I record into it... things get compressed or stretched (twice normal speed or half speed... cant remember which... think it was twice normal speed).

So I am looking for alternatives...

Best,
Robert

I for one, would love to have more audio editing tools for OS/2.

Most of the ones out there now are pretty limited in capabilities and throwing another into the mix can only help.

In short, I do audio editing and I would use it.

Hi Ólafur,

Thank you for the thanks :-)

Any recent audio editing tools for OS/2 would be very welcome.
