Title: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: Saijin_Naib on 2008.10.15, 18:30:56
Excellent, excellent, excellent, excellent. It's nice to have a functioning GUI player for eCS. Shame it's not native like WarpVision but this should probably prove to be more stable anyway :P

Good work guys!

If you use the same critera, WarpVision is not "native" either.

Actually, this whole "native" thingy is pretty much a moot discussion. It is a native app as Qt is available for OS/2. Non-native would mean run via the DOS box or Odin. If you extend your definition of native to "has to use standard OS/2 GUI elements," Mozilla, OOo, and everything that uses skins wouldn't be native apps either.

Warpvision uses a Window Abstraction kit? Which one? QT3 or WxWidgets? In any case, SMPlayer is pretty excellent and I look forward to it becoming a full Mplayer front-end exposing all it's features (according to their About SMPlayer page). This should fill the A/V gap in eCS a little bit better.

I guess native in this case means PM native, meaning using PM controls etc.

It's great to have smplayer, but I personally think that apps using native PM controls are a better choice for user (unfortunately not for a programmer ;) ) - every hange applied to PM applies also to those apps. And not native apps nearly always lack full PM functionality.

Thus I also hoped for more rapid development of wxWidgets, for it is something native like - interface for PM native controls in most cases...

It doesn't use such a kit but thanks to the skinning crap the GUI doesn't use PM controls either, except for the partially functional play list and the settings notebook.

smplayer: okay, I've tried it (10.20 version); best I can say is needs more work.

First and most important, its GUI file selector is typically clumsy, requires
complicated and precise mouse movements to navigate. The selector is SIMPLY
buggy too, wouldn't display even one .avi file in the directory I went to
first, nor could I find ANY .avi, only .wmv files -- and those wouldn't play
until I browsed to set executable path as "C:\mplayer\mplayer.exe" rather than
"mplayer/mplayer.exe". While trying various items, I managed to create "New
Folder 1" despite clicking "Cancel". Great. Just like Windows.

2nd, those .wmv files played, jerkily, in upper left corner rather than full
window. Whether that can be "fixed" by settings, I don't really care, as I
already have a system that works better.

It's upsetting to me to criticize when I wish the developers all the best, and
I'd certainly overlook bugs and development problems, BUT the GUI bit, while
SLICK in appearance and impressive in number of functions, is for me nearly
fatally flawed in the file selector. -- Oh, and on program start, it spins up
my second drive needlessly; that's just plain annoying, and some opinion holds
that each spin up shortens drive life. Please don't touch ANYTHING that you
don't actually need.

I don't complain without an alternative to suggest, and will be so immodest as
to suggest that everyone should try GFilSel2 from Hobbes to see what can be
done on the old-fashioned command line with just a bit of REXX code. I can
look into directories ten times as fast with the keyboard. (Being a "general"
selector, the file types aren't filtered to just videos, but this turns out to
not be an obstacle if one can navigate quickly.)

And it's not even exactly any inherent advantage to keyboarding, it's that GUI
file selectors are still arranged in the first crude way that occurred to
whoever twenty years ago -- probably more feebleness we can blame on Bill,
certainly so because never improved -- still tiny buttons that require time to
locate, still slow to read and display files, still awkward to navigate, and
worst of all, upon entry to or exit from a directory, reset EVERY time to the
first file/folder instead of any attempt to keep track of place: that works
okay only when are few files and folders, just multiplies annoyance now.

Yes, are some nice features and a deal of promise. However, the combination of
clumsy, buggy file selection with not-great playing isn't yet even adequate.

You are of course aware that SMplayer is a Linux app right?

Also, there is no way this app is not an improvement over WVGUI which simply failed to do anything worthwhile other than crash.
Title: Re: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: ddan on 2008.10.23, 19:08:23
Uh, you're aware that GFilSel2 is a REXX command-line program, right?

You evidently missed my point, that I ask people to try my simple little
program for a better, or at least alternate, way to select files.

I tried NOT to bash smplayer as such. Wish I had the talents they show on the
complex parts just in making the port work, BUT that still doesn't make the
file selector part fun for me. And overall it doesn't work as well as the
current mplayer with my text front-end.

That GUI isn't necessarily better you know to be my on-going theme. I wish
you'd just try -- oh, right, you no longer use ECS. Hmm.
Title: Re: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: Saijin_Naib on 2008.10.23, 19:16:44
I've downloaded GFilSel2 before, but I am very fond of the GUI. The CLI is always great to have around, but I simply don't want to HAVE to use it.

I also find it odd that you make snide remarks against Windows and Microsoft for the implementation of a GUI file selector from a Linux native app that has been ported to OS/2. I just simply don't see the connection, but this type of argumentation is common among those who may be a bit too passionate for or against something, whatever their reasons may be...

Could there be an improvement in the GUI of SMplayer? Certainly. They also have a feature-suggest tracker specifically for this purpose. I appreciate having it over WVGUI which was highly unstable and certainly no easier to use (the settings notebook was horrendous).

And yes, I no longer use eCS. I've paid up my Software Subscription and I await RC6 or GA with USB booting ability. I'd like to see eCS on my netbook because I'm finding Xubuntu and gOS far too limited and unstable. The 8.10 Ubuntu release may fix some of these issues, but I still prefer eCS over Linux.

No, the odd part is that you consistently defend Windows HERE. However, doesn't matter where the GUI came from, all I've seen have the same problem of resetting to first file/folder, EVERY time you enter or exit a directory. Just that one item in my command line version can save literally minutes a day over any GUI.

What I wish is for someone to re-do GUI file selectors. These are an atomic, basic, low-level, FREQUENT and ESSENTIAL item, easily improved, yet they're all flawed.

And another thing, all GUIs are simply manual labor, no automation or customization is possible. What looks sophisticated is in fact the most rigidly hard-wired part of the OS.

It's the standard Qt file selection box, which is IMHO is much better than what
OS/2 provides by default: It's resizable, has the abilitiy to create new directories,
has a detailed view with sort function, can rename and delete files and behaves
as expected on files with multiple dots in their names. It is, indeed, a bit slow in
loading, but that's the price we have to pay for the multiplatform approach.

As part of the Qt library it is not specific to smplayer. If you don't like it or have
ideas for improvements you are free to go to:  http://svn.netlabs.org/qt3
and fix it. BTW, the only thing that I really had to complain about is this one:

already have a system that works better.

I increased the cache size someplace in the settings to take care of that, and it now plays better than mPlayer alone (simply because I am too lazy to increase the cache sizes for running mPlayer standalone).

It does seem to improperly recognize window/video sizes from time to time - but I find enlarging the window to the same size or larger than the video resolves that (when the output/screen mode is set to "auto")

Also the lack of full screen ability is kinda annoying, especially since one can change to full screen via the options while a video is playing - but no such feature is available from the menu.

Post by: ddan on 2008.10.24, 01:27:45
Well, I'm trying to not be negative, because the rest of it -- besides file selection and playing! -- looks slick, but I'm utterly tired of file selectors that require me to scroll with the mouse EVERY time I go into or exit a directory with more than a couple of files/folders. Better ways are easily possible even with a GUI, but they seem absolutely locked into the clumsy methods of Win3, and without ANY alternative to using the mouse for everything. Simply implementing page up / page down from the keyboard would be an enormous improvement (I didn't test that in smplayer, though).

In any case, I couldn't find a single .avi with that selector, or rather, when I typed "*" as the name, they appeared, but couldn't be selected.

And, I suspect that the development hardware was a lot faster than my 2800+ with unaccelerated SNAP, though the latest mplayer works fine on it, even full screen.

Title: Re: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: Saijin_Naib on 2008.10.24, 04:32:01
DDAN, have you tried using Panorama VESA as opposed to SNAP VESA? It's much faster for everything, though still significantly less fast than accelerated SNAP.

Also, you should really be fine on your 2800+, I never had issues on my weak P4 with Panorama, especially after our OS/2 ports of MPlayer gained support for lman(believe that is what its called) [the Panorama backend].
Title: Re: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: ddan on 2008.10.24, 18:48:58
No, I haven't tried Panorama, though have some version of it, somewhere. But unless it somehow fixes the file selector, I don't see it helping a major obstacle.

Because, although the file selector, whatever its origins or similarities, isn't exactly bad, it does waste my time. If you're ever idle, calculate how much time is wasted, two or three seconds at a go, by hundreds of millions of people fumbling with antiquated file selectors, and other senseless but standard items of GUIs, which could be done BETTER. I'm not even arguing at the moment that keyboarding is better, but WHY are buttons so tiny when there's oodles of blank space in a dialog box?

Point is, now that I DO have experience with something better, it's difficult to bear the old clumsiness.

Now for a little balance: the file selector IS better than usual for allowing delete, for fairly large areas of text on ONE line instead of piled up, which is always unreadable, and one can re-size its window. -- You're right, it's not of Windows origin.

Well, I got the 10.20 version which was the latest at that time.

I'm in an uncomfortable spot carping when it shows such promise, but as with FF3, which I just now deleted from my HD after again attempting to get menu fonts bearable, in sum, it's not an improvement over previous, and actually worse.

Let me spin it positive: I'm pleased with the current mplayer. Also, since I'm planning to move to the Dual Xeon server Real Soon Now (though it's gigantic at 29 inches, or near 74 cm long plus clearance for cables), it has accelerated ATI graphics, which may disappear the problems.

As for FF3... no problems with fonts on menus for me using the default fonts - though I did change some of my system fonts to the updated ones on Hobbes before I switched to it (so I dont know if that is the reason). There is also a font dpi setting for SDD that may be the culprit. What resolution are you using?

As for smplayer, the version I am using is the most recent on the link on this website - dunno if maybe it's another person's build that has some OS/2 specific fixes or not. You may want to try it instead - and set the cache to maximum.

The windows file selector allows for rename, delete and all other explorer supported operations and menu entries as well as multiple file view and list sorting criteria, as well as supporting resize on the file selector window.

And seeing as you are complaining about it's lackluster playback, using a new version of Panorama would ostensibly fix one of the issues that YOU cited with the player. What does it hurt to try?

Edit: oh yeah, make sure to turn shadowbuffer on otherwise you will have miserable screen drawing and performance much like SNAP VESA unaccelerated.
Title: Re: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: ddan on 2008.10.25, 02:25:02
RobertM: looked for DPI setting in SNAP (is that SDD as you meant?) and don't find. Did discover that in typically perverse fashion, clicking "Advanced" on the resolution page switched me to full text screen with a numbered menu. Not complaining, just a laugh.

Anyhoo, main problem with FF3 menus now is between the text is a gap large enough for another line of text, so effectively cuts the number in half. However, with its amazing sloth, I just can't bear it in sum. It's another major project that disappoints me because of both flaws that should be easily fixed, and flaws that look severe. As with smplayer, may  be in large part lack of accel'd driver.

Saijin_Naib: my memory of XP is dimming, glad to say, but file selector refers to the standard, system provided, dialog boxes, not the "My Computer" / Explorer windows, and for those little dialog boxes, I don't recall them having more than basic function, besides that the major flaw I complain of, resetting to first file / folder every time one goes into or out of a directory, is definitely present with "My Computer", as is piled-up names that are unreadable when all start similarly. You don't notice with a few files, but being popped back to the top of dozens or hundreds gets annoying. I'll be near an infected -- heh, heh, discount that one dig, please, can't resist -- machine tomorrow, will try to give it a look for clear example, IF they exist or are only in my biased -- but NOT prejudiced -- memory.

I don't know about the performance improvement possible, but reason NOT to try Panorama is to avoid possibly trashing the system. In meantime, think I've made clear that I allow as how MY low-end system doesn't show smplayer in best light.

And for more positive, I LIKE the three degrees of fast forward, a worthwhile idea.

It's not that I'm against smplayer without cause, it's just not working -- for ME -- in important areas.

Maybe the answer to the FF3 menus is the following taken from the Mozilla for OS/2 page.

QuoteFirefox 3.x and Seamonkey 2.x feature built-in support for antialiased fonts. Only TrueType and Type 1 fonts can be used, so you may want to install WorkPlace Sans to replace WarpSans.

I just tried it and it works!  I've gone back to FF2.0.0.17  because FF3 won't use some of my addons.

Don't forget to make sure that you turn off the Innotek Font Engine for Firefox3 as it is rendered in Cairo and the IFE keys are redundant and can slow things down or cause instability.

A great way to do this (if like me, you run both the 2.x and 3.x builds), as Saijin and I think ddan or Ben suggested elsewhere is to simply rename the Firefox3 executable to something different - such as firefox303.exe - that way FF2 still uses IFE, and FF3 will not.

It's also an easy way to accomplish the same thing without having to edit registry keys or uninstall IFE. Their suggestion, I found, was extremely easy, and works wonderfully.

There is a new build of smplayer on netlabs... it seems to have the same version number, but a different date. I am thus guessing it is a new release of the same version with some things corrected in it.

I have yet to try it (just found it) so I am not sure what issues it addresses and/or what other features may be available.

It can be found here:

(Currently there are two v0.5.21 files... one indicated as 10/14/2008, and one indicating 10/20/2008)

Hi Silvan

A quick bit of feedback on the latest smplayer.

Not as good as the previous build (qt4beta1) as:-

Playback is far more jerky - when it happens.

Playback window/area does not resize to the size of vid clips being played.

Too often video disappears and only audio playback happens.

The Preferences, Keyboard and Mouse, Keyboard page has a display problem: Every other line is Black with just an icon showing under the Description column.

The beta1 build could be a little jerky during playback compared to the last qt3 build but does not have the other problems.

Hi Silvan

I did have both mplayer and smplayer checked for log output - presumably that is to screen as there does not appear to be any related log files anywhere on my drive?

No great difference with the above unchecked I'm sorry to report: slow to start and jerky playback on all vids tested to date - the ecs "promo" vid clip  \mmos2\movies\ecs.mpg is a good short example.

Yes, using a vaguely working uniaud - what other audio drivers are there for modern hardware?

I guess it is possible that something on my system needs a little tweaking to get this build of smplayer working better...

My previous post was incorrect - took a while but I've just realised that I had replaced the beta2 build with beta1 build.

I've just retested the beta2 build and my previous post about jerky playback, video and/or audio disappearing still stands - beta2 is unusable here and I have again reverted to beta1.

Hopefully beta3 will work...

hmm what does beta1 and beta2 mean exactly. using the same qt dll and only different smplayer? or also backleveling qt dll.

as i can't think as a change i did in smplayer which could slow anything down.
Title: Re: smplayer for os/2 ecs
Post by: Pete on 2009.11.27, 18:33:46
Hi diver

beta1 is a complete package - dll files included.

beta2 is in 2 packages, smplayer and qt dll files.

Replacing beta2 with beta1 means deleting the contents of the smplayer directory and unzipping beta1 into the now empty smplayer directory.

Of possible further interest: beta2 interface sometimes behaves oddly when opening a vid using the Open, File option ; the interface jumps around and some of the menu bar ends up duplicated at the bottom of the screen but inverted (upside down). This does not happen every time but maybe 3 in 7 instances.

When beta2 starts playing a vid clip the video playback disappears after 5 jerky seconds of playback; audio then becomes smoother.

Well, my best guess is that qt4 still needs a bit/lot of work to make it usable.

Regards

Pete,

Could you please try SMPlayer beta 2 with the video output set to the slower kva variant that uses DIVE? Doing so pretty much fixed all of my display problems with the current beta. It seems that the culprit is output via SNAP overlay.

Hi!
Well, in my case the solution to some initial problems with beta2 was guite opposite... - after I've specified output as user defined - kva:snap - any glitches were gone. Although smplayer start playing video a bit longer than quiless mplayer alone - there is no other differences in picture quality and performance on my system. Few other bugs still are there like subtitles downloading or font choosing - nothing serious though and after some tunning in options working like expected. I did even grab some extra icon schemes - working ok.

Hi

That seems to have fixed the video disappearing after around 5 seconds playback.

However, playback is so jerky with lots of dropped frames that I would not use this at all.

Hi

I seem to be failing to recreate this problem at the moment but will take a screenshot if it happens again.

Maybe this problem was caused by something "glitching" elsewhere on my system...

Hi Diver

Hmmm...

Sad to say that it does not work  :-(

I have qt4.6.2 installed along with the gcc4core library package.

I can start smplayer but it freezes/crashes when I try to do anything with it - such as open a file - and requires killing using top.

Pete

smplayer 0.6.9 works great for me (two very different systems). It was necessary to set the audio to use KAI:DART (same as with the 0.6.8 version), or the sound wouldn't work, and the video playback was very choppy.

Hi Doug

smplayer is slow to appear onscreen, very slow to display the Open File or Preferences dialog and crashes when opening ecs.mpg. I also notice that screen redraws have problems when running this build.

If you say that it is working better than that on your systems then I wonder what I am doing wrong?...

I have audio set to kai:dart and have tried video set to kva and dive.

I don't know, unless you missed the instructions to uninstall the old QT4, before you install QT4 4.6.2. There may be some residue left over that can cause trouble, if you didn't. I am also using MPlayer from the mplayer-SVN-r30994-OS2-4.4.2.zip package (at HOBBES), which actually does the work.

FWIW, I usually start SMPlayer by double clicking an associated file, but using the menu also works.

Hi Doug

I uninstalled qt451 before installing qt462.

I am using mplayer-SVN-r30994-OS2-4.4.2

If I double click on \mmos2\movies\ecs.mpg it takes around 15 seconds for smplayer to appear onscreen and the video to *not* start playing then the system starts to become unresponsive - so much so that pressing my "Windows key" to show the Process List does not work. The only way to close smplayer at this point is to use TOP.

If I start smplayer by clicking the smplayer.exe file it takes around 15 seconds to appear - some sort of consistency I guess.

If I select Options, Preferences that dialog takes between 30 and 45 seconds to appear.

When I try File, Open the dialog appears about as quickly as the previous version. Having selected \mmos2\movies\ecs.mpg the dialog disappears quickly - and nothing else happens; no video or audio.

After a short period of time about 2 minutes smplayer shows 2 of it's icon in the playback window and is not responding to mouse clicks - nor is the system and we are back to killing smplayer.

The file ecs.mpg plays fine using mplayer from the command line and played fine with the previous smplayer/qt451 combo - except for when resizing the video in smplayer which caused odd bits to appear in the playback window.

It seems to me to be something wrong with either this build of smplayer or qt462 - or both.

Time to see if the log is of any use to the qt/smplayer people in diagnosing the problem(s).

In the meantime it is back to qt451 and the corresponding smplayer to watch the odd vid clip.

Pete

Pete,

I initially had problems with QT 4.6.2 because of a left-over qt.conf file. I had also uninstalled 4.5.1, but either this file didn't get deleted, or possibly it was left over from an earlier beta. Anyway... I uninstalled QT, searched for qt*.conf files on my drive, deleted the one I found, then reinstalled QT and everything seems to be working now. Maybe you could try that?

Hi Dave

I have the current scribus build working with qt462 but gave the uninstall/reinstall tip a try.

As scribus (still) works I think the problem is within smplayer.

Thanks

Hi

Finally got smplayer working - when it was pointed out to me that the log showed smplayer was calling smplayer instead of mplayer.

I have no idea how that happened as I had browsed to the mplayer directory and selected mplayer.exe - maybe I had not clicked "Apply"...

I do find smplayer has problems with screen redraws though. Anyone else seeing any problems when another app overlaps the smplayer window and then the other app gets closed/moved and "bits" remain in the smplayer window? This happens when smplayer is not actually playing anything; when a vid is playing the problem does not seem to occur.

Pete

Yes... I see that. Also, if you drop down a menu, then move the mouse across to another drop down the display get messy.

Playback works fine for me though...

Hi Dave

Would you Please be so kind as to report this to Silvan as he is unable to duplicate the screen redraw problems I have described to him - I also supplied some jpgs to illustrate the problem.

At least then he will know I am not the only person seeing the problem and, hopefully, he will then look into look into fixing the problem.

I also find resizing the playback window shows the screen redraw problem.

Just a reminder to all,

As a generalisation,

If you have a ATI card and use the SNAP drivers ao=kai:uniaud
should work fine when selected for MPlayer.

If you have a NVidia card and use the SNAP drivers ao=kai:dart
should work fine when selected for MPlayer.

The SNAP drivers do not support NVidia cards to the same extent
that they support ATI cards due to code access.

Hi

The build of uniaud HDA that works best on my system is not really up to the job.

Although I am using SNAP with an ATI X800 KO Myung-Hun recommended using ao=kai:dart on my system due to the uniaud build in use.

as long as you use a older uniaud for HDA you will always see some strange problems with smplayer.
please try at least 1.9.22 or better, as this should fix a lot of stuff. And then you can use kai:uniaud

What is actually the advantage of the UNIAUD API  vs. DART ?  I never understood, why it was
necessary to add a special API to a sound driver when there is already something present in
the OS that can do the job...

Rudi,

the uniaud api talks direct to the driver (32 bit part), while DART uses the 16 bit part to talk to the 32 bit part. all i can say is that with the uniaud api i have never had a hang in HDA, while using the DART api i had hangs. With the current uniaud driver also those hangs are mostly gone. what i still have with the DART api are sound loops, while with the uniaud api i never have those. i see them mostly with emperoar tv , when i have a not so good connection.

Which makes me believe that there was a bug in the DART implementation, which should have been fixed instead of forcing application developers to use a new API...

Yeah, I'm aware of this problem. It has been introduced with the RC5-version of UNIAUD16.SYS and became even worse later on. But again: preferable UNIAUD should have been fixed to behave like any other sound driver on OS/2 (and like it did prior to RC5). BTW, I just tested the latest 1.9.22 release on an AC'97 system: It's pretty much unusable with ETV... Back to 1.1.4RC4, which - just like the native SBLive! or C-Media drivers - works perfectly O.K.

Rudi,

of course you are right about being a bug in the DART implementation. But is looks like it's hard to be found. As it's only for HDA systems. For me the 1.9.22 version works almost perfect, but not with emperoartv :( i still have looping sound there. but i have to ry the latest version from svn, as there seems to be some problems fixed.

Hi Silvan,

recently a new guy has started working on UNIAUD. Rumors say, that he already fixed some stuff in UNIAUD16...

BTW, did you try to combine version 1.9.22  of UNIAUD32 with UNIAUD16 from 1.1.4RC6 or  1.1.4RC4 ? This might fox the looping problems with ETV as well.

Hi

i had a response from Silvan about the screen redraw problems I'm seeing here.

He suggested using this setting, either in config.sys or on a command line used to start smplayer:-

SET QT_PM_NO_DIVE=1

I added that to config.sys, rebooted and the screen redraw problems seem to have gone.

Silvan also said this is not an smplayer problem but a QT problem specific to some systems.

Pete

Hi Dave

Out of interest: Are you using an ATI X??? graphics card and Snap?

I ask because Andi is using "ATI X300 and Snap" and I'm using ATI X800 and Snap.

Just wondering If ATI and Snap are the "QT problem specific to some systems" mentioned by Silvan.

Pete,

Yes... ATI Radeon 9600 AGP. I have this on both my desktop and laptop. Both use SNAP. QT_PM_NO_DIVE fixes the window corruption in SMPlayer (haven't seen it anywhere else yet) on both.

Update - even with QT_PM_NO_DIVE not all problems are gone. Sometimes the space were the video should be drawn remains black until I move another window over it. After that it starts repainting as usual. But the bottom menu bar (volume, track position, start/pause...) are corrected with this setting.

Another problem is, machine hangs after some time. 10-20min ? WPS is completely unusable then. No CAD session (2 times CTRL-ALT-DEL reboots). But netbios and tcp/ip are working. Seems a video problem too or another uniaud problem?

Andi,

which uniaud version do you use? and do you use DART or uniaud switch with KAI?

as mplayer works best with the uniaud.dll. With DART it tends to hang sometimes. Newest uniaud is way better in that regard, but still not perfect.
