Title: eCS 1.2R install?
Post by: rdonnelly on 2008.10.22, 02:34:22
I am about the install eCS 1.2R. Can it be installed beyond the 1024 Cylinder boundary if I use JFS?

eCS 1.2R won't offer the choice of installing on JFS. But it will install fine beyond cylinder 1024, hardware permitting. If you want to install on bootable JFS, then you should use the latest eCS 2.0 release candidate.

Well, I learned the hard away about eCS and winblows XP existing on the same HD. This should be made a sticky: http://www.os2world.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,63/topic,1134.msg7473/#msg7473

I tried to make partitions and use winblows backup to restore every thing with a automatic system recovery diskette. I had the backup on my external USB HD. Winblows erases the partitions and re-formats the internal HD to be expected. But get this, I had a partion on the external drive, and winblows re-formats that drive and erases my back up. So I ended up creating a 40gig partition in eCS for winblows, I reinstall XP from scratch. Then I had to buy software just to recover the partition that had years of business, photos, documents, data, etc. So I got my winblows working and back in order.

Here we go eCS installation, installed boot manager and a 5gig partion for eCS. Formatted it HPFS fast format, run install, files installed, eCS reboots computer, and loads SYS01463 error. So as I write this on my wifes computer, I am doing a long HPFS format. Hopefully this will solve the error? But if not, I hope one of the members can help me.

Thanks Bob

Well, ends up boot manager is giving me the sys01463, I set the eCS Partion as startable and the the system now boots the HD with more problems. I never got to the second stage of installation (system booted from HD)

Line 82 config.sys D:\OS2\boot\com.sys not installed hit enter, boot continues.

when it starts to load network connection driver, shows a couple of buffer lines, then stops.

I tried to reinstall without networking support (should have just used rem instead)

Now it stops at IBMCOM\MACS\NULLNDIS

BTW, I am using a SATA hard drive.

The com.sys error can be ignored. It means that either (1) you do not have a com port or (2) it uses some weird, unsupported chipset. If it is #1, it may simply be disabled in the BIOS (or a machine that doesnt have one). Just REM it out, either way, and then work on a solution later.

As for the NULLNDIS problem, when I do an install with a network card that I am pretty sure is not supported in the default installation (as well as sometimes when I just want to spend more time setting up my networking), I *DO* install networking, but assign everything to "No network adapter" (which in reality is a virtual network adapter - NULLNDIS).

I have seen similar errors (usually when booting to commandline at a later time) because something required for NULLNDIS to "work" is missing or changed. That does not in any way seem to affect the operation of my OS/2 or eCS install though (other than not having network support during cmdline boot).

This message:
SYS1463: The operating system cannot be loaded from the startup drive.

No help is available for the message ID number requested.

May be indicative of a geometry issue - or a partition that is too large to be booted off of. That happens in some rare scenarios... some SCSI cards (must be in the first 8GB +/-), some rare SATA implementations (same), some rare IDE implementation (same), some geometry translation issues, and BootManager being messed with by XP (and changing where BM is trying to boot from or damaging Boot Manager) as well as some other weird times I cannot recall off the top of my head.

I am presuming it might be Boot Manager being damaged. Simply boot off the eCS CD, and update Boot Manager's startup options... failing that, boot of that CD, remove boot manager, reboot to that CD, re-install Boot Manager and set back up the startup options.

Hope that helps,
Robert

I have a 160GB SATA HD, partition 1 40GB XP NTFS, Partition 2 7MB boot manager, Partition 3 5GB eCS HPFS.
Do you think it may boot a smaller partiton. I was thinking, it might be I have a Pentium 4 HT processor, I did see some similar problems at the eCS site about install problems with dual core type processors.

copied from eCS FAQ-----------------------------------------------------------------

Q:     [RC3 only] Installation hangs in phase 2 (I have a Dual Core / AMD X2 machine)
A:    This is unfortunately due to a small error in the installer with big consequences.

If you have a Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, AMD X2 or similar system, the installer will detect this and add the proper

parameters to the ACPI.PSD line in the config.sys. However, during install, the kernel isn't SMP capable, so it will

fail as soon as it is booted with these switches (/SMP /APIC to be precise).

The workaround is to use the maintenance console at the end of phase 1 (or after boot from CD) and remove these

switches from the config.sys:

PSD=ACPI.PSD /SMP /APIC
should read:
PSD=ACPI.PSD (other switches are possible)

This should allow proper installation. After installation is complete, you can use the ACPI wizard to configure

these switches again and add the SMP kernel to your system.

Hi Bob,

Seems you may have indeed found the problem. I'd try that. And no, a 5GB partition should not be a problem for booting from.

OK, the 4 HT is not a true SMP processor, so that is not my problem. I shut off hyper threading in bios any ways. I have no problems with boot manager or booting eCS from the HD any more. Every time I go into phase2 of installation, it always hangs while loading config.sys, I have tried install, with and without networking, but it constantly hangs while the config file is loading. Would I be better off to forget 1.2 and just install 2.0 RC5? I bought the eCS license and 1 year subscription, where do I down load the beta, I tried mensys, and they say I need user id and password.

Thanks for helping Bob.

Hi Bob,
check one of the 2 mails that were sent to you when you bought the subscription. Usually, you'll have to enter a special page (stated in the mail) that allows you to identify with the credentials (from the mail) and then will give access to everything downloadable for you. Note that this is *not* the standard Mensys shop site but something different... can't tell the URL by heart, will have to check.
(Anyways - that Info is from when I bought the OpenOffice.Org offer from Mensys, I can't tell for sure if that is also the case with eCS, but most likely it should be...)

warpcafe

Thanks, I will contact Blonde guy, since I bought it from him. Now back to my problem, will RC5 be a better bet to get an OS/2 system installed?

Thanks Bob

Bob,

RC5 (or RC6) may be a better install option depending on the hardware. Or a patched RC5/RC6 using the newest ACPI drivers.

Two other things I can think of that throws eCS into "fits" during installation are (1) enabling any RAID support in the SATA options (I've seen it enabled in the BIOS by default on some boards even with one drive installed), and (2) the rare, buggy (or not properly implemented) SATA implementations that surface from time to time. One ASUS board comes to mind... eCS would not install on it (but Windows would - and seem to work fine, until you realized the system was losing data). A year into this issue I gave up and replaced the SATA drives with IDE (ASUS released numerous BIOS patches to solve it, and never managed to correctly resolve the issue) That particular board though, has since been pulled from production and replaced with another model.
