In order to use GIMP it seems that the only option (for me) is to use Hoblink X11 server as X server emulation.
Well, you could use WeirdX, but the graphics tend to get garbled periodically so you have to keep refreshing the windows... It's also a bit sluggish.
I was very surprised that I did not find HobX11 on eCS 2.0GA CD2 - as opposite to eCS 1.2R CD2, where the files were present and working.
Now if I try to install this 1.2R version of HobX11 on 2.0GA, I get the warning about license agreement violation and HobX11 will not start.
So this brings a slightly disturbing question: is there a way of either running HobX11 or some other way of running GIMP on eCS 2.0GA currently?!
This technique was determined on ecomstation.apps by Steven Levine and David McKenna:
>>What might work, unless the HOB code protects itself against binary
>>edits is to use a renamed ecsreg.ini (i.e. hobreg.ini) and edit
>>xwpdllid.dll to look for this file. This will protect the file from
>>getting overwritten.
Well... blow me down! It worked.
Here is what I did ....
1. Make a copy of xwpdllid.dll.
2. Right click the original, choose 'Properties', then 'Type'. Change type to
'Executable' (if not already).
3. Choose 'Become' and change to XWPProgramFile'
4. Close the Properties folder, then double-click xwpdllid.dll.
5. The file is opened in EPM (I have NEPMD installed - not sure if it comes
with eCS 2 or not). Search for ecsreg.ini. I found 2 instances and changed
them both to Hobreg.ini.
6. Save the changes.
7. Copy the ecsreg.ini from eCS 1.2 to C:\OS2\Hobreg.ini in eCS 2.0
Hoblink started with no complaints. Thanks Steven!

Dave McKenna
Personally, I'd recommend using a proper hex editor rather than EPM. You can also avoid the rigmarole with changing the WPS object type by opening the file from a command line.
Note that, since you have eCS 1.2, you have the perfect legal right to keep on using HOBLink X11, on any eCS version, so there's absolutely nothing legally dodgy about the above.
Also - my question was about HobX11 availability itself. Is there a big reason not to include it in 2.0GA as well? ???
Licensing. The contract with HOB has run out.
