Title: Open-Source porting candidates for Os/2 & eCS
Post by: Terry on 2007.08.23, 03:03:15
I ran across this 8-15-2007 article, "50 Open Source Desktop Projects: Good Downloads" at

http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3694506 (http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3694506) and wondered:

[1]  How many projects might be OS/2 & eCS portable?

[2]  How many of these open-source projects don't have an equivilent OS/2 & eCS counterpart?

We are all well-aware of Paul Smedley's tireless Unix/Linux porting efforts at http://smedley.info/os2ports/ (http://smedley.info/os2ports/)

Since I am not a programmer, and a budding SOHO networker...

Anyone have thoughts about the projects mentioned in the article, or some projects that might have been overlooked in this article?

Interesting article that mention quite a few nice projects; there are a few that I recognize that there are some talk about getting to OS2 - some might happened and some will never even get a single try. The ones that I recognize are: OpenVPN, OpenWengo and Second Life and ClamAV (http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14619/2/) we already have for OS2 (49 to go :-) ) VideoLAN looks really interesting in terms of getting more or better codecs handling under OS2 and as well there is a bounty (Extend multimedia support for OS2 & eCS (http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14800/71/)) for such project as well.

Blender http://www.blender.org/ (http://www.blender.org/) would be one of my favourites from the list. I sponsored the program when it was bought from NeoGeo by the community to be released as OSS. AFAIK Blender has its own GUI widget set, so this would probably be the one major obstacle when porting it to OS/2 and eCS. However, we do not have a similar application yet, so this could also attract some more people to give eCS a try.

BTW Crystal Space http://www.crystalspace3d.org/ (http://www.crystalspace3d.org/) can handle models from Blender. A capable programmer with lots of spare time could port both Blender and Crystal Space, then create a nice game... ;D

Both project that you mention are great projects and I would love to see them on OS2 as well since I tend to play around with this kind tools once a while. But another question, you mention that the community bought out the code from NeoGeo; you wouldn't have any more info (urls, facts) that you could point to? Kind of interested to see what the pulled of and with how much money.

Sure, no problem. Read on here http://www.blender.org/blenderorg/blender-foundation/history/ (http://www.blender.org/blenderorg/blender-foundation/history/) for the history of Blender. In short, the source code and the IP therein was bought by the Blender Foundation for 100,000 Euros and open sourced afterwards.

Here's two of the article's apps that would make "wishlist" ports:

[1]  "GIMPshop" - article #17 - looks interesting as a Gimp plug-in to "Photoshop-ize" the Gimp...

Gimp/2 => http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gimp&pushbutton=Search (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gimp&pushbutton=Search)

GIMPshop => http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294 (http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294)

GIMPshop website says:  "Built out of frustration with the cost of Photoshop and the existing UI provided by GIMP, GIMPShop enables graphic editing comparable to a Photoshop feature layout."

[2]  "Songbird" - article #46 - "A desktop music player similar to iTunes, but built on Mozilla Firefox technology.  Includes iPod and playlist support, in addition to streaming of MP3s."

http://www.songbirdnest.com/ (http://www.songbirdnest.com/)

Songbird website says:  "Songbird™ is a desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up.  Like Winamp, it supports extensions and skins feathers.  Like Firefox®, it is built from Mozilla®, cross-platform and open source"

I like BottomFeeder just because of the name. :)
