Title: Your OS/2 Abandonware Wishlist
Post by: Terry on 2007.09.10, 23:29:04
Wishlist:  "Wouldn't it be nice if..." this OS/2 application would be released to the eCS-OS/2 community as abandonware.

The Dadaware folks did this for OS/2 Embellish:  http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=embellish&pushbutton=Search (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=embellish&pushbutton=Search)

#1 "OS/2 Abandonware Wishlist" pick would be:  Visualizer Query.  Doug Clark's November 2001 OS/2 eZine article, "Visualizer Query," was a bonus article to his superb 12-part "OBDC on OS/2" series that ran in OS/2 eZine from May 2001 through April 2002.

As the article's screenshots attest, this is indeed a "killer application" since it is one of the few database apps that was fully integrated into the OS/2 Workplace Shell.  Visualizer Query requires either an OS/2 DB2 CAE, or OS/2 DB2 server.

OS/2 eZine's - Visualizer Query => http://www.os2ezine.com/20011116/page_4.html (http://www.os2ezine.com/20011116/page_4.html)

OS/2 eZine's - OBDC on DB2 (part 7) => http://www.os2ezine.com/20011116/page_8.html (http://www.os2ezine.com/20011116/page_8.html)

Astrac purchased the Visualizer Query rights from IBM, and later stopped offering this database reporting application apx. two years ago.  The last Astrac Visualizer Query offering was optimized for DB2 v.5x.

Would the Win32Prn qualify as abadonware? http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=win32prn (http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=win32prn) The database for it has not been updated since 2004. The source code was suppose to have been released to Netlabs but I have not heard anything about it. http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=win32prndownloads (http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=win32prndownloads) None of the files shown are downloadable or accessible.

Mensys bought this code and were planning to further development - but based on CUPS having a better probability of success - they abandoned plans for win32prn.

What app are you thinking of that is abandonware?  RSJ has not long ago put out a new release, the only other option I am aware of is Open Source already.

IBM EWS written PMDRAW, a near full featured vector drawing programme. I use it all the time and it's fantastic except for a few small bugs. I personally find it better than xfig.

It'll be great if it becomes open sourced and  the few bugs are fixed like 8.3 filenames.

BueCad? I think it is abandonware since there aren't any newer versions of it (at least not for OS/2-eCS).

For my part, I'd love to see OpenChat/2 open sourced.

It's a neat little IRC client that needs a bit of debugging and modernizing like the addition of UTF for example.

I believe someone tried to hunt down the author before...

Does anyone know anything about this?

Here are a couple more.

PMiNews (yenc crash fix? built in yenc support and a few other minor bugs)

Dictonary (full version of the Dux app that came in the family pack)  I found a back level copy on ebay but it is not easy to merge the two versions.

Mikh claims the source code was lost in a hd crash or a fire or his dog ate it or something of the sort..  Better off getting development continued on pmbitchx

As somebody suggested blue-cad, we may remember of Bentley os/2 Microstation (perhaps called Microstation 95 till its last release), which is a superb 3d-cad with rendering (I am told), born as a true professional tool. But how to do?
Herewith some more news http://www.os2ezine.com/20030916/page_4.html (http://www.os2ezine.com/20030916/page_4.html)

Which, I guess means that whichever the case may be, we aren't getting the source. Too darn bad.  :-\

PMBitchX is a lesser client to be sure and a bit awkward to deal with, (though it's been a while since I've used it).

I'm wondering if there isn't something better out that in the *nix world, (or elsewhere), that we can get the code for.

I don't deal with *nix so I'm not in a position to suggest anything.

Anyone?

Hi James

If you are really desperate for a copy of IBM VA Basic for Windows and OS/2 I know I have 1 somewhere.

However, if you are not in the UK the postage would probably be more than the package is worth - unless you are really desperate  :-)

As to the "Abandonware Wishlist" I think you should add every app that is still available, not supported or maintained but requiring a Licence to use.

Regards

Pete

Yeah... I have 1 copy of that too. FORGET IT. :-)
That thing is even less useable than VB3 GA was on windows!
I remember that I was more than disappointed by that... piece of... ehh... software.

I agree that if there would be a VB4-like OS/2 native counterpart, I would spend a lot of money on that.
Let me put it that way: Someone can give me an IDE for BASIC which follows the OS/2 approach and object model (and API!!!!!!) and creates OS/2 native executables on click, supporting Warp4-style controls (including containers)... then let me know! I'll gladly pay for that about everything I can afford...

Thomas

Hi Pete,

No. I'm not in the market for the IBM product. I have MS VB4 in WinOS2 session if needed. However, my VB is now .Net 2003. However, I am still using and am happy with EMX. I was just adding my thoughts to the list.

I would love to see BackupWiz by PCX made available again - only because the list of SCSI drives it supports needs to be expanded to cover more of todays drives.  I still use it for all my backups and have found no bugs in it, so there is little need of support for it - just a way for new people to purchase it or otherwise get a copy in a legal way.

I also think KEDIT by Mansfield Software Group should be made available again.  I have used it as my main character editor for 14 years now, and have not run into any bugs in over 10 years, so again, support would only be in the form of information and how to use it...  John.

MD+F SX-Paint II. Quite decent application that I continue to use for things like animated GIFs, and anti-aliased fonts. Is a little unstable (handle with care ;o) But overall pretty good.

MZ LIKE TO SEE PORTING OF MICRO STATION AND/OR INTERGRAPH ON THE UNIX BASED MOTOROLA 68000 HP GRAPHX STATION TO OS/2 WARP OR EVEN ON PCDOS 2000...AND WORKING AS GOOD AS IT DID SO BEAUTIFULLY ON UNIX BASED PC TERMINALS IN THE LATE 80'S, WITH EMAIL, BLOCK FILES AND CHAT, ET AL BUT I HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING JUST HOW TO PORT IT MYSELF EVEN TO DOS...AS THEN THERE WAS NO WINDOZE OR LINUX, ONLY DOS, BUT WITH OS/2 ON THE HORIZON THEN IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IN BY THE  MID 90'S PERHAPS, BUT I WAS NOT FWD THINKING...IF ONLY I HAD THE KNOWLEDGE WAY BACK WHEN,  ACAD WOULD HAVE BEEN TOAST AND BY NOW OS/2 OPEN SOURCE MAY HAVE BEEN MORE VIABLE HAD IT HAPPENED? JUST KEEPING THE THOUGHT ALIVE, MAYBE JUST MAYBE...MZ

As reported bugs for Golden Code Java 1.4.1 are also not fixed (sound issues, large file support using NIO,...) this can also be called abandonware.

The best would be if GC opens their code to help to port newer Java versions like 1.6 and the upcoming 1.7 but obviously that's something they don't want to.
I also don't think that it helps GC to sit on their code to make GC Java 1.4.1 sell better.
Java 1.4 is dead. I see it but GC doesn't.

It costs more and more of my (free) time to port back newer Java applications to Java 1.4 as I did in the past with Azureus 2.x, Eclipse 3.2.x, Commonist 0.3.17 (http://djini.de/software/commonist/) and some other tools.
If the sources are not available it's even harder to do.

Is there any way to convince them to open up GC java out of the (lol) goodness of their hearts? There must be a way to convince them not to hoarde code they have no intention of ever using.

I would likto add Bluecad to the list.  Cadware ceased development on os2 ver in late 90's (still producing windoze ver)
Bluecad for os2 ver 1.0 and one update is available free.  I believe this is worthy of consideration.

IBM Visual Age for Java Enterprise Edition.

Purchased the original version 1 for $3000.00
Later as as  Program Choice member received version 3.02

This was a Java 1.1 platform development system written fully in Small Talk with an "internal" java.
Parts of 1.3 were included but new updated as Windows and Linux were.

Replaced with WebSphere which later had parts included in Eclipse.

NONE are as good as Visual Age for Java.

I still program with Visual Age and have found ways to use it for current development.

I recently contacted the people of CadWare about open sourcing BlueCad for OS/2.

They told me that there is not interest on open source it, not even changing its brand name. (Reply by Alberto Barbadoro).

But he told me that BlueCad 1.0 for OS/2 is available for free download on their site (Italian) with a free online registration:
http://www.bluecad.eu/dnnsite/it-it/download/prodottigratuiti.aspx

I just checked and it is available for download version 1.008 with an extra 1.010 patch in English, German and Italian.

Sorry if it is old news, but at least BlueCAD is freeware.

If you can find the parties involved it may be possible... Apparently the source code was offered but noone was interested, by the time I had found out about it years later I wasn't able to track anyone down, though I admit I was not as persistent as I could have been.
