Supporting thread for the Virtual Box port (http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14951/71/) bounty.
Can we have conditional sponsorship? I'm willing to invest into this if I can use VirtualBox on my dual Opteron in the end (ie. if it is NOT limited to using the latest Intel CPUs).
Cheers
Andreas
The usual people are already working on Virtual Box...so it's only a matter of time until there is a first official release.
Since I've put money where my mouth is ;D : I'd like to see networking and USB support.
And having sound would also be nice ;) .
Thanks!

OK, I put up some money in any event ;o)
Maybe Serenity should sponsor this bounty with all the money they collected for their infamous SVista program, that was never really useful (at least for me)...

I don't think the first release will have all nice addons available (like USB) but it would be great if it's otherwise usable.

I just read the VirtualBox website and it seems that USB connectivity is not open source :( . Clearly networking is a must, sound would be nice.

Does anyone know if serial port emulation is likely to be included?
(part of the open source code etc).

Note that for me, adding device=vboxdrv.sys to config.sys made the desktop fail to populate icons after a reboot....
Paul,
I tried your build... don't have any trouble booting with vboxdrv.sys, but trying to start VirtualBox results in 'Failed to create VirtualBox COM object. Callee RC: 0xBDD4D154'. Trying to start VBoxSVC results in 'ERROR: Failed to get IPC service (rc=80040154). XPCOM server has shutdown.' SUPInstall gives 'Installation failed rc=-37'. All this on a Intel P4 machine running eCS 2.0rc2. I'll keep trying....
Thanks for building VirtualBox!
Dave McKenna
I also tried VBoxBFE -m 128 from a command line and get: 'Failed to load VMMR0.r0 VBox status code: -102 (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).
I notice at 'http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Binaries_overview' that there are several *.r0 and *.gc files listed that are not in the archive of the build - are they required?
Dave McKenna
I'm running a P4 computer with ECS 1.2R. I was able to load vboxdrv.sys fine from config.sys without disturbing anything.
But when I tried to run virtualbox.exe I am getting:
Failed to create the VirtualBox Com Object.
Callee RC: 0x80040154
I'm not sure if there is another step I am missing to install it or if I was supposed to add anything to the command other then just running that, but just thought I would share.
Thanks,

You know Paul, this is getting quite annoying! You post you're gonna have something available... and it takes almost an hour and a half!!! I remember the last time I was looking for something I really needed (new RxSQL), and it took a few MINUTES before you posted a link to a new build you put together!!!!

What can I say? You're amazing!!!! You and the rest of the gang cranking out all these ports and programs deserve to be highly commended and thanked!!!
If I get around to playing with it, I'll post some feedback...
From all of us, thanks again!!!!

I just tried the same method to create a hard drive image as MrJinx above, and had the same error.
But then I downloaded virtualbox windows version onto a windows box, made a hard drive image there, and then copied that image over to the ECS machine.
I ran this:
VBoxBFE -m 256 -hda c:\win2k.vdi -cdrom S:
I then got the virtual box bootup welcome screen and pressed f12 to select a bootup drive.
If I pick either floopy or cdrom however as the boot drive it dies with this error:

No success here... like the others I can't get it to recognize any boot medium. I have tried to boot from floppy and CDROM. It always fails with the message: FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted. I have tried every switch on the command line listed by VBoxBFE but nothing helps.

I did some limited testing using virtualbox.exe (the gui frontend) and an iso of windows 2000 - i got as far as win2k booting from the iso image so appears things do work.....
Hi Paul,
I just downloaded your new package and it is working better (but still having an issue).
I can now run virtualbox.exe directly and the gui loads up fine without error now - and I can create the virtual computer and assign a hard drive image. But if I try to assign a host cdrom drive or floppy drive within the settings, it does not see any of my local drives. So there still appears to be an issue with floopy and cd/dvd boot drives (which I need to load my os from a cd).

I also saw the problem of not being about to select a drive letter from the gui - will look in to that when I get some free time.
You could always make an ISO of the cd so that you can install....
Well, It looks like making my xp install cd into an iso worked. In my previous post I was still having problems with the vditool. I went back and made a 2 gig instead of 4 gig vdi file, and have a almost completed xp install as I write this.
I was wonder if anyone knows how to get just the guest addins iso? Or do I need to download the windows version from innotek to get it?
I didn't see it in Paul's distro anywhere. More to follow.
Thanks Paul!!
It looks like a good start... :D
Get the latest additions here: http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.5.2/ . I haven't tried them myself yet. I have tried the latest build archive and can now start the VirtualBox GUI. Looks impressive. I also am not able to mount any CD or floppy drive. I tried creating a machine using default values and booting Damn Small Linux iso and it booted properly, but I can't use my keyboard in it at all. Mouse works OK, but I can't get the mouse out using the right <CTRL> key. Luckily <CTRL> <ESC> brings up the eCS task list. I've got to read more of the manual....
Thanks again to Paul!

After completing the XP-SP2 pro install, I was able to select standard windows resolutions. Mouse had to be captured to be usable. Host + P will pause the session, Host + P again resumes and releases the mouse.
After installing the Guest addins, Any attempt to change the resolution other than color depth, causes the vbox session to exit. Looking at the VBOXBFE log file. It looks like the call to resize fails.

I am able to use vbox without trouble from the commandline but using the virtualbox exe, I get all the proper dialogs. I can mount iso(s) for the CD but not the actual drive. When starting a created profile, The Win XP image crashes before the splash screen(In the vbox window not vbox its self.)
Yet the same image file ran from vboxbfe boots up fine.

Hi Paul,
this one looks promising here. The GUI starts and picks up the ISO of Ubuntu 7.10 and of eCS 2.0 RC3. However, the big stumbling stone for me is that my keyboard is not recognized. The keyboard is grabbed (ie no input possible into other apps, until I hit Ctrl+Esc), but none of the keys I press make it into the VM.
The host key doesn't do anything here as well, the mouse seems to have some effect - at least in the eCS install I could move the selection in the primary menu with it.
Any ideas where to look to get the keyboard working?
Cheers
Andreas
PS.: This is on a dual Opteron 244 workstation with a stone age normal 102 key keyboard (not USB).
I am also getting no kbd events to the guest os (FreeDOS) and have ended up killing VirtualBox.
I created the disk image and virtual machine with the gui. If there is anything I can do to help out find why there are no events, just let me know.

OK, I used VboxBFE with the appropriate commanline switches now and get most of my keys recognized (not the arrow keys fro some reason and also the Enter key (the grey one in the numerical block) doesn't work. But it's usable overall and I'm installing Ubuntu 7.10 right now :o))

OK. Now I got Ubuntu 7.10 installed and running pretty well. I installed using the i386 ISO file with
VBoxBFE.exe -m 256 -rawr0 -boot d -hda G:\VDD\vbox\VDI\Ubuntu.vdi -cdrom F:\Download\LinuX\ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso
Now I created a little program object and can run Ubuntu with
VBoxBFE.exe -m 256 -rawr0 -boot c -hda G:\VDD\vbox\VDI\Ubuntu.vdi
Overall performance is great. It boots in 64sec to the login screen and is fully usable after another 30 seconds. OpenOffice.org Writer (version 2.3) loads a new document in 32 seconds (version 2.0.4 needs 19sec in eCS 1.2R).
Some limitations so far:
1. Whenever I shut ubuntu down, I get a message saying: "Error: VM terminated abnormally!" (but it starts nicely the next time, remembering all the setting changes, so I think it's no big deal)
2. No network, no CD-ROM access (just ISO files)
3. The window switches to 1280x1024 whenever the Ubuntu boots, shuts down or presents the login screen (which is kind of annoying on a Screen that is just that size. Once the system is up, it sticks to the 1024x768 I set it to.
Things I didn't figure out so far
1. How do I enable / access the shared folder?
2. Where are the additions for OS/2 (where do I download them from?) And how do I use it in VboxBFE?
3. How to hug Paul for this port ;o)
BTW, VBox runs on this dual Opteron machine in SMP mode, something that VPC never did (I needed to switch the machine to uni-processor to use it...)
Thanks a lot to all people involved. Looking forward to the next steps!
Andreas
Now I have WinXP SP2 as well. No network though and no shared folders - so it's a little less useful ;o)
See a screenshot at http://andreas-ludwig.info/index.php?page=system-info
To create ISO files, use isocomp from the xcomp package at hobbes - way easier than mkisofs (at least for me ;o). Boot time for Windows XP is impressive (nder 20sec) to the login screen.
Now the ingenious creators just have to get network going...
Cheers
Andreas
One more observation: Mouse double click doesn't work very well. You need to click 4 times fast after each other to have a double click in ubuntu. (Played with setting for double click speed in the ubuntu guest, but no change)
And another thing:
VBox does not run twice simultaneously. Whenever I try to start the second instance of VBox/2 I get:
VirtualBox Simple SDL GUI built Oct 28 2007 16:53:31
Failed to load VMMR0.r0!
VBox status code: -2 (VERR_INVALID_PARAMETER)
Error: VM creation failed with VERR_INVALID_PARAMETER.
I wonder if this situation can be changed by assigning each instance of VBox/2 to another CPU - after all the guest in VBox sees only one of my two opterons ;o)
This might be a general limitation - I just downloaded the windows version to check it out on my laptop.

No problem - I did post to comp.os.os2.apps my rough build instructions which did deviate slightly from the outline at Innotek.

Finally i got Win2000 running with more or less the same setup as Andi.
But instead of VBOXBFE i'm using VBoxSDL. This works better here especially the mouse/keyboard capturing works.

The same symptom here.
I like to suggest to setup some kind of wiki page somewhere to write down some howto's to help other people to start with vbox. For me Andi's description was a great help.
Any success with shared folders or network?
Paul thanks a lot for your great work.

Hi guys,
To those of you brave enough to try out Paul's latest build, how does it work? Is networking ok?
I'm curious about your experiences before I take the plunge. I'll probably be loading in FreeBSD or Redhat. I really don't want to spend any $$$ on a copy of WinXP to test this.
cytan
The latest is working great here - both Win2000 and Fedora 8. Pointer integration and shared folders works with both. I am using the VirtualBox.exe GUI and everything seems to work except I cannot save a snapshot - no big loss. There is still no TCP networking, CD-ROM (except mounted file), floppy (except mounted file), com port or sound in a VM though. Using VBoxBFE.exe I still have to 'triple-click' on icons to open them, and fonts are often chopped-off at the top - these don't happen using VirtualBox.exe.
I have started messing around with OpenVPN, and got it to connect through a tunnel from the guest to the host, but I haven't been able to get my head around all the routing that needs to be done to make it usable for internet browsing on the guest yet. Even following instructions on the OpenVPN website hasn't got me anywhere...
Anyone else try to set up OpenVPN in a guest yet?...

Just a reminder about iso:s. Tonigy presents data CD:s as iso-files directly. I guess that would work , so you don't have to make them.
The bounty prize for the VirtualBox port has raised to $302.
I'm wondering if for bigger bounty projects like virtualbox, if maybe the bounty should be released partially with milestones.
For example, Paul Smedley did a good amount of work initially getting it started. Maybe he should have received a % of the bounty so he gets something for starting he project.
Just seems like it would encourage more work since people don't have to do everything to get something back.

FWIW I did very little actual work on virtualbox other than to compile it. The OS/2 specifics were (at the time) available in svn.
