Title: All other partitions can be up to 512 GB using HPFS386...

The following is part of the installation instructions to install OS/2 Warp Server 4 Advanced SMP on an IBM Netfinity 7000 M10:

- "All other partitions can be up to 512 GB using HPFS386, and 2047 MB for FAT partitions."

I found that quite... amusing (and wish it were true...)

Hi Robert

I'm not that familiar with HPFS386 but seem to remember reading somewhere that it has the same limitations as HPFS in reality - 64Gb maximum partition size but to avoid problems that should be limited to 50Gb.

Please correct me if I have that wrong.

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete,

You are correct. The data structure is large enough to support 2TB, but part of it is reserved for other uses. The 512GB limit actually isn't a file system limit - but a limit that was in the various drivers and affected boot partition sizes (something rectified in recent eCS releases).

I just found it kinda funny. And sad. HPFS386 outperforms JFS on various server tasks (lots of access to a lot of small to medium sized files).

Best,
Rob
