I thank you both for the input. I was able to download and install usbbasic.exe and install, then I was able to run usbkeybd.exe and usbmouse.exe and all is well. Thanks again!

I just checked my config.sys and there is no reference to usbkeybd or usbmouse. There is also no usbkeybd.sys or usbmouse.sys anywhere in the boot directly or anywhere else I can find. This computer has only had ps2 mouse in keyboard to date. Is there any way I can get the usbkeybd and mouse .sys files to copy into the boot directory and add the entries into the config.sys? If so, are there existing keyboard and mouse lines in the config.sys that I would need to rem from the ps2 keyboard I am trying to go away from? Thanks Sean

Hardware / More OS2 newbie support
2011.09.28, 00:36:08
I am running os2 version 4.5 and am wondering if I can make this version support a usb keyboard and mouse? I found found 2 files usbkeybd.exe and usbmouse.exe, but when I try to execute either of them they error saying they can't open the various files. I was reading here that USB keyboard and mouse support need to be enabled, but I'm not sure if that functionality even exists on my version and if so how do I enable it? Any help would be much apprectiated. Sean

Robert, thank you for all the info. My issue now is I have removed the slave drive and put my config.sys back to original, but my desktop is still gone. It's not the config.sys that causing my current issue. Something else changed when I modified all config.sys references to the new shifted drive letter and booted that was not corrected when I put everything back to original. If this is just to wacky I understand. Thanks

I don't know whats contained in the os2.ini file, but would it make sense that when I booted after changing all drive references in config.sys and booted that there was a reference to the D: drive desktop D:\desktop in the os2.ini that no longer was valid and that the system then modified the os2.ini to look in the e: drive for the desktop and created a temp desktop file. Then when I switched everthing back to normal the os2.ini no longer has the correct reference to the correct desk top? When I clicked on help at the workplace shell it called out a program to access and make changes to the os2.ini file, maybe I can open this file and find something obvious. I think there was also an archive directory that may have a backed up os2.ini file that I could try replacing it with. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help. These are extremely old computers probably 15 year or more and os2 is loaded onto a dos partition with a seperate hpfs partition for data. I can go into dos and modify os2 files. I understand what you said about the .ini files, but that doesn't explain why it didn't go back when I changed the config.sys file back to original and removed the slave hd. Thanks again for the reply!

O.k. so here is what I did I have a harddrive with os2 warp4 v 4.5 I believe. When I start it, it boots to the  boot manager you can boot to dos (this is used as a service option to fix os2 issues I think), or the other is the os2 installation. So what I was doing was taking another drive with the exact same boot loader setup, but with an older version of os2 and hooked it up as a slave. When I did this I now showed another os2 installation to choose from and because all the drive assignments shifted it cacked at country.sys in config.sys. Soooo, I booted to dos and went into what used to be d: drive now the E drive and changed changed every reference in the config.sys file to E: from D: and rebooted. When I did this it booted all the way to where the desktop would be but it had workplace shell, Your Desktip could not be found in the os2.ini file. An attempt will be made to create a temporary directory. If this fails, an os/2 window will be displayed. I cancelled and it launched an os2 window, but with a jacked up desktop. After I was done with the other drive I put config.sys back, but the desktop is still not working. Any ideas on how to get this back? Sorry for my long winded explination. Thanks

I have a newbie question, today I was using the RMVIEW command from and os2 prompt and most of the data scrolled out of the screen. I have used the /p with dir command to page through data, is there a similar command for the return of requests like rmview? Thank you!

#1 it is....
As soon as I hook up the larger drive as a slave the system kacks and says it cant read disk 2, then it also is unable to see the os2 partition in the boot manager as well, only the dos 7 partition shows up. At the dos prompt I have only C: the dos partition and D: the Os2 partition nothing from the second disk. In the bios it shows the 1.6G drive and shows the 40 gig as 4.1G. Is something I can overcome by hooking the larger drive up as a slave on a machine that does not have this bios limitation and partitioning the drive into sub 2 gig partitions or is this cylinders and heads kind of issue?

Thanks, I'll give this a try and post back.

I tried to contact IBM and Google and Yahoo searched all day for a bios upgrade for this system with no luck. If you know of any resources for that, I would much appreciate that.

The bios is very basic under Devices and ports

A year ago I was able to fix my equipment with the help of all the amazing people that contribute to this forum. Well, I am back again with a very similar issue. I had another drive fail this time it was system that was running 1.6G hard drives not the 4-6 range I was dealing with last time. When I put my 40G drive in the the DANIS driver I got a hard drive error and couldn't even get to the point where the OS2 would take over to use the driver. The last time you all helped me my bios recognized the HD as a 40G. This time no matter what size I put in anything above 4.1G registers as 4.1G. I think this older computer may have some legacy issues that are holding me up. Does anyone know what I can do here. The computer is a 7587 IBM industrial computer running SUREPATH bios. The onlly thing I see when the bios page comes up is "IBM 586 single board computer version 1.36, and a surepath logo in the bottom right. In the bios itself there is a date of 8/26/87. Any help would be much appreciated.

Disregard the above I found where to select the default drive in the fdisk program. I also found the setboot /0: command which is supposed to remove the default. Anyway, thanks to everyone here that chipped in to help me out. I have worked with these tools for years and have been held hostige to the vendor whenever I had a failed HD now I can save my company the $1100 dollars they charge for a new HD. Unreal eh??? Thanks again
