I'm looking to install eCS v2.0 on a new SOHO desktop box to be used not only for standard OS/2-friendly apps, but; also as a server to a WinXP box & Vista laptop.

Recently, I've consolidated computer software into more accessible library/shelf storage. For example, I have "rediscovered" a quite extensive Lotus Notes (circa v4.6) collection including an OS/2 Domino Webserver Go v4.6.1; OS/2 VX-Rexx Client/Server V2.1; OS/2 VisualAge TeamConnection Enterprise Edition -- (+ some other VisualAge apps) among the OS/2 software apps -- DB2 on hand includes DB2 v5.2 & DB2 v6.1 UDBs -- And a ReportSmith that can be installed into Win-eCS for database reporting.

Question #1:[/b]  What newer "Server Applications" are OS/2 Forum members currently using and for what purposes?

Question #2:[/b]  Can any of these newer "Server Applications" may be coordinated with OS/2 apps mentioned above?

Question #3:[/b]  Is there a more newer "K-V-M approach" (or other desktop apps) to concurrently access WinXP & Vista boxes from eCS?

Perhaps, part of the fun and challenge, will be getting everything to communicate within the SOHO.

Not yet listed -- Better Privacy to delete (Flash) LSOs upon browser exit, and Fireshot for screen captures.  Otherwise, Adblock+ and DownloadHelper are most welcome.

On non-eCS (i.e. Laptop/Vista) -- IE Tab+ calls the I.E. engine to load within that specific tab for those websites who still think the Borg of Redmond personifies open-source & global standards.  Question:  Does anybody still have a win31 I.E. on eCS for redmond-inspired scenarios?

Current & up-to-date threads for an e-mail client/reader, are virtually non-existent.  I'm also looking "to finally graduate" from gmail, yahoo mail, etc. to an offline e-mail client.  Plus, my hunch is some may be new to the eCS/OS2 community over the past 5 years.

What is your personal experience?  Is Polarbar, or Rexx Mail, still viable without maintenance & updating for the past 7+ years?  How about Mozilla offerings like SeaMonkey?  Does anybody still use Lotus Notes?  Does anyone have a SOHO e-mail server scenario?  Who syncs e-mail clients cross-platform?  Are there any neat e-mail utilities?  ...etc.

The intent here is a more detailed what-is-most-effective-thread for circa 2011 forward.

Here are a handful of weblinks to begin this e-Mail Client thread:

These two websites/articles might be helpful for an eCS host:

Applications / jNode (java)
2011.03.17, 02:04:23
..interesting  ...just ran across jNode - a Java-based operating System at http://www.jnode.org/.

jNode seems to be mainly run inside a VM.  In a way, it almost sounds like running another operating system within your operating system kind-of-like running Win-OS2 inside OS2.

jNode's home page"JNode is a free, open source Java technology based operating system implemented in the Java language with a very small assembler nano-kernel.  The main focus of this release is general stability improvements and bug fixes and also reflects the current status of several major features in active development such as: isolates, Bjorne shell and complete support for HFS+. Significant progress has been made with the integration of the remaining parts of OpenJDK and the JNode class library has been updated to OpenJDK6 b13. JNode now builds with both JDK 1.6 and OpenJDK6+IceadTea..."

Starting with Windows95 (32-bit) -- Windows became the best-marketed operating system, not to mention, the best arm-twisting-practices operating system for software companies & developers, including computer manufacturer pre-installs.

Today, WinXP, WinVista, and Win7 are still not the the most stable operating systems, but they are stable-enough, to the uninformed casual user.  OS/2'ers & eCS'ers tend to be "power users" (along with Linux-users) who are sandwiched-between the "casual Win-OS user" and the "programmer/developer."

Lotus WordPro should import a TEX-file => TEX is equation-friendly.  Perhaps an alternative formatting solution might be to employ an OS2 TEX/LATEX application to reformat your document => Continued improper equation printing, even on a simple equation-test basis, would certainly confirm a faulty driver.

Abandonware / Re: Lotus eSuite
2011.01.16, 22:14:12
I had Lotus eSuite 10 years ago as an "Easter Egg" find on a Linux Distro Utilities CD.  It was a nice app at the time, but it was also quite slow, and Lotus Smartsuite was just much easier to use as a native application.

cups.org does mention "KodakĀ® = lpd://address/ps" on its "Using Network Printers" webpage at http://cups.org/doc-1.4/network.html#TABLE1.

Are the cost-efficient & laser-like quality of Kodak printers supported under eCS 2.0 GA?

Here's a current link:  http://store.kodak.com/store/ekconinf/en_US/ContentTheme/pgm.67144800/pbPage.lp_esp3250?cm_mmc=Infomercial-_-TV-_-3250-_-PR1-_-LEN60-_-WEB

As of 2009, Parallels Workstation 2.2, is available for free (normally $49.99 U.S.) until the offer is discontinued. A full license activation key will be immediately sent to you via e-mail.

I learned of the Parallels Workstation at Gizmo's Freeware under Hot Finds...
http://www.techsupportalert.com/view/hot

I am hoping that eCS as a Guest under my Vista Home Premium on the new Acer Aspire Laptop will be a much friendlier install than under M$ Virtual PC 2007 or Sun VirtualBox. At any rate, the price is right, with a permanent activation key for commercial software, that will "talk nice" to either OS/2 and eComStation.

P.S.: Gizmo's is a good place to locate freeware, or free commercial software, to tame the fragmented files world of Windows XP or Vista.

"Burned by Chrome - Fire put out"

Update - Google amends Chrome EULA

(Updated 4 Sep '08 0830 GMT) Google has amended section 11.1 of the Chrome EULA so that it now reads:

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights that you already hold in Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services.

There are now no other sub-sections in section 11. What you see is what you get. Terrific. Google acted with alacrity. Great stuff. No worries. The points below no longer apply.

Original story

Astute Reg readers have pointed out a Chrome condition of service that effectively lets Google use any of your copyrighted material posted to the web via Chrome without paying you a cent.

Since the "Chrome" browser has a Javascript engine...

One wonders how operating system neutral will be the shine on the chrome.

Hardware / Re: need a new printer

You may want to checkout the Kodak EasyShare printer

The "secret" for Kodak Printers is that they use pigments.

Also, if can you locate an HP-compatible printer that uses the HP74 (black) and HP75 (color) print cartridges there is the extra potential:  HP74XL and HP75XL come with three times the ink.

Programming / V/BOX2 and Zipslack
2008.07.16, 22:20:00
Only "thinking out loud" here, and why this question is under programming.

QUERY:  Would it be feasible to engineer Slackware Zipslack as a guest install inside V/BOX2 as opposed to a standard linux distro guest install since Zipslack is designed to piggyback on top of a DOS/Fat16 or a Fat32 filesystem, let alone, with extremely low RAM requirements?

http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/

Could this be a "programming shortcut" for V/BOX2?
