DOSBOX emulates a version of DOS.

While Windows 3.1 runs on top of DOS, OS/2 does not, so it won't run in a DOS box.

You should note that OS/2 won't boot in an OS/2 DOSVM (ie DOS from Drive A:) either.

The preferred format i use is to use raw diskette images (.dsk), and raw cd-rom images (.iso).

Here's some things i use.

Floppy disk

Anything that can read diskette images of some kind will read and write raw images.  I'd rather use this format than some kind of zipped or partial image.  Some emulators have problems with particular extentions, so you might have to pick and choose here.  .IMA, .IMG, .DSK, .FLP, and .VFD are all used for images, the first two are also used for graphic images too.

1.  extract.exe (www.winimage.com)  This extracts and injects files from DOS.  version 2.00 seems to be better under OS/2, the latest version is 2.1, but OS/2 gets confused with the WinNT segment.  You could probably configure this as an archiver under some file managers (there's one for totalcommander/win), to read/write to the data segment.

2.  dskimage.exe:  i don't know where i found this, but it's a DOS proggie, that works under OS/2 and Windows NT.  [i've seen an OS/2 proggie 'image.exe' that works like DR-DOS diskcopy: ie copy to/from image file + DOS style copy.  Prehaps it could be a feature of the new OS/2.

3.  makedskf i think does full images.

4.  There's a DOS proggie hight 'os2hdd' that extracts a diskette image into a directory based on the diskette label.  (eg Diskette with label DISK_0 directory \disk_0 in the target). Its primary use is to copy OS/2 diskette images to a layout for install.

5.  Winnt proggie vfd mounts floppy images to diskette for the OS to hack.

CD-ROMS

I use .ISO files here, since many proggies work with these.  Some will even let you edit or mount the iso direct.  Some disks have funny formats, so we might need things like BIN/CUE etc here.  I'm no expert here.

1.  readcd (from cdrecord) does a good job of imaging cdroms and dvds.  I use this under Windows mainly, but OS/2 ought work too.

2.  proggies exist to allow mounting + editing of iso files.  Ultraiso and WinIso can both edit the ISO file, without destroying any boot structure.  For making ISO files directly, i use a batch file + rexx scripts + mkisofs.exe to index + produce iso files.  At the moment, i am using the russian version of mkisofs, which supports the --duplicatesonce switch.

3.  for compression / expansion, i use proggies with cross-platform support, such as RAR, ACE or ZIP.  I use fc2 / fcw as a shell for these, so that it's easier to pull files out of an archive.
