For certain DOS programs, I made a C drive, with 496MB space.  This, I believe, forces OS2 to use FAT16.

I load OS2 (eCS) ON D DRIVE.

My goal, make certain DOS programs work, using OS2, that otherwise seem to have problem withnot recognizing  total allocated drive space.

Remarks?

Dave,

I found the MA401 by Netgear, not under D-Link.  Is this the one to which you refer?

On installing on big hard drives, I found OK with hard drives with upto 7.9 GB.

I obtained a 40 GB hard drive for Thinkpad 770Z.  I did successfully install WINDOWS NT.  But I don't want NT.

I tried eCS 1.2R, but get stuck on partition.  Always partition error.

How do I get around partition error, for larger hard drive?  If I could partition, what is maximum size partition for eCS 1.2R?

Well.  What a difference changing the partition makes.

I set a partition to 2GB.  Then instanned eCS 1.2R.  Almost all is OK.  The audio drives do not install, with error.

Now the the main problem.  I set the partition to 2GB since that is the maximum partition for DOS and WIN 3.11 programs.  These old programs cannot work with larger partition.

Two WINDOWS programs were installed.  With larger partition, I encountered previous problem.  Now with 2GB partition, installation went straight through.  On execution each of the two programs, I got different results.  One program works perfectly.

The other program starts a WIN 3.11 session, but I then receive a STOP and message, NOT ENOUGH SYSTEM RESOURCES TO START APPLICATION.  I am not sure what this message means.  I suspect some setting in CONFIG.SYS file needs to be changed.  But I do not know which one.

Thank you for the excllent response.

I wonder if 2GB volume would work?  I pick 2GB since this is maximum volume for DOS.  I shall try.  If not, I shall lower.  I shall report results here.

Also, with you advice, I can make the remaining 5GB+ volume a LOGICAL volume, for data, i.e., word docs, photos, pdf, etc.  Since I only plan using eCS on thinkpad 770Z, I can format all drives with OS2 HPFS.

Thank you for response.  I shall post results after experiment.

I got eCs working on my Thinkpad 770Z.

One problem is when I try to install a Windows 3.11 application, always the program, actually every Win 3.11 program I try to install, gets not enough disk space response.  The disk has over 7GB availability, yet the win says zero availability.

What do I do to install win 3.11 apps?

OS2 apps install OK.

I tried both, OS/2 v3  WARP, and OS/2 v4 WARP.  Seems major problem.  I cannot get any of my three TPs to allow partition, and then proceed with installation.

I just ordered today, eCS 1.2R.  But I would like to obtain update boot disks, if available.  Can I download from another site?

OK.  I am asking the forever question on installing OS/2 WARP 4 on THINKPAD 770 series.  Hard drive is about 7.8 GB.  Seems Warp does not want to partition.  I used F1 for setup, but not obvious what to do.

My real question, is this the case for all versions of OS/2 on most Thinkpads?  I did successfully install on TP 701C with 40 MB RAM, 2 GB hard drive, using Warp 3, and all 3.5 inch diskettes.

Does ECS 1.2 solve the installation problems on all TPs, having a CD drive?   I've not yet got ECS, but wonder if ECS is solution for TPs having CD drives.  If ECS makes easy installation, then seems way to go.

Which PCMCIA cards, i.e., brands, workd with OS/2 on Thinkpad?  I would like to have either (actually both) options for wireless and RJ45.   Problem with all that I see on EBAY, they support WINDOWS, including 3.11 and DOS.  I am not sure if enough for OS/2.

I appreciate advice on how to install and get running.  One is Thinkpad 770E.  Other is Thinkpad 701C.

Also, is there a way to install from Diskettes and CD in a 701C?  I do not have floppy.  Not sure if I remore HD, is easily can install in another Thinkpad and load OS/2 v4 w updates, then replace HD in 701C.

I did some research since last post.  The MCA Laptops  were 700 to 720.  After 720, IBM dropped MCA.

Robert,

Thank you for great reply!

You may have answered the quesiton that I had on Thinkpads.  I believe it was the 600, or so, that was MCA.  Is this correct?  Were there other MCA Thinkpads?

I believe I had one of the very first 600s off the production line.   I definitely remember having MCA Thinkpad.  I ordered almost the day they came out.

Just curious, and maybe if 600 is MCA, then mabe I shall find one on EBAY, or at the computer and hamfest in  Manassas VA, Sunday, June 3, 2007.

If IBM had made OS/2 an option for pre-installed software, as Micrsoft (MS) did. . . . .   Clever marketing by MS

This was one of my pet peeves. . . . .  I was a dedicated OS/2 user, and IBM PS/2 and MCA computer buyer.  I wanted pure IBM.  Not the problems with which I wresteled using Windows.

IBM made a good product.   IBM tried to have their own proprietary MCA 32 bit system.  If I recall, MCA 32 bit was the first on the market.  But the open aschitecture caught on, and end of MCA.  I had a lot of MCA computers, and the PS/2 MCA model 95 fileserver.  The MCA fileserver lasted from 1990  till 2001.  Used Novell 3.11 on it.  Still have the Novell 3.11 netware in original box, but since have upgraded to 5.1.  Wonder if 3.11 still could be used for something?

I would like to get a copy of OS/2 server, and try it.  But that is a longer term project.

Does anyone have and use any of the MCA computers?  I even had the first set of MCA Thinkpads.  At that time, the choice was DOS with WIN 3.11, or OS/2 2.11 and maybe 3.  I still have most of the OS/2 software, and shall proceed from there.  eCS is on my radar screen.  I shall get, but may wait till v2.0 comes out.

I shall download and open that file, since I still have the dock station version III.  I gave my Thinkpad 770Z to a young man (now age 16), who uses it daily.  But I can get another on EBAY.  I also can get the boy an improvement, to a P3 or P4, and offer in exchange for the 770Z, if I wanted my original 770Z back.  He is now upgrading OS to XP, and asked me to get him the XP drivers for the 770Z.  Wait till he discovers that the 770Z is slow, due to memory cap at 320MB.

Enough history.  Thank you for feedback posts.

Thank you, everybody, for the feedback.  Don't assume that I, or anyone else, already knows. . . . .  I learn from each post.

I've got a good feeling that OS/2, and eCS, will work in Virtual PC on my MAC powerbook.  I do not have the new version with the Intel chip.  But the older version, where Virtual PC is a emulation of a PC running in the MAC OS X.  When I installed, I recall that I could install any windows OS, and DOS.  The emlation is a PC, not particular to any OS.  Thus, I suspect that I can run OS/2 and eCS.

You also solved the issue of no floppy drive.  I actually just learning about eCS.  I used OS/2 a decade ago.  But seems most software was for WINDOWS, not OS/2.  ODIN looks promissing, and I already downloaded, from somewhere.

Drivers for hardware always seemed to be a major problem with OS/2.  Problem was finding them.  I happen to have some old installation disks, from the mid 1990s.  Thus, some printers, as I am sure you know, came with driver disk, which included OS/2 drivers.

On network, I used Novell Netware, extensively.  One of my earlier Novell supplied Client disks, has OS/2 client.  But more recent client disks seem to have dropped OS/2.  Nothing is wrong with earlier OS/2 client.

I recall problems with using Thinkpad 770z with docking station III.  Problem was no OS/2 drivers, or I had troiuble finding.  But I was able to get the station to work with Windows NT.

From a business point of view, I needed time to get work done, not searching for drivers, and non existant software for OS/2.  This was a key reason that I dropped OS/2.  But, as I mentioned, OS/2 is like an old girlfriend, still in love.

One of the major drawbacks of WINDOWS was often crashed, or simply stopped working. Kind of like driving down an Interstate highway, and the car stops  all of a sudden in busy traffic.  A crash.  My staff had option, back then, to use DOS.  They used DOS, and everything in WINDOWS was DOS compatible.  Nice compromise.

OS/2 has a lot of characteristics that my staff liked about DOS.  Basically, fast response.  My head secretary, ten years ago, could type faster than WINDOWS WORDPERFECT could handle.  DOS WORDPERFECT was no problem, however.  I suspect the DOS WORDPERFECT running in OS/2 would have had same fast response as DOS.

I recall using  OS/2 on my early Thinkpads around 1995.  OS/2 v3 and later v4, then was quite impressive.  I liked OS./2 very much.  But the same Thinkpad could not handle WINDOWS NT.  Not enough memory, or fast enough processor.

Well.  Some of my past experience with OS/2.

As I get back to using OS/2 and eCS, I recall asking, why didn't IBM make OS/2 drivers for all their peripherals?

I am reminded of this question, for the IBM ThinkPad Port Replicator with Advanced EtherJet - Files for the Thinkpad 770s, and 600s.  I now look at their site, and it lists all versions of Windows 32 bit OS, but no mention of OS/2.  I wonder if some in IBM had a death wish for OS/2.

Thank you for feedback.  I take it that ecs is replacement to OS/2.

On academic, I was years back.  But now in my retirement, I am taking courses at a local university.  Thus, I may be qualified.  I shall check it out.

But from the posts, seems that eCS is best investment.  I saw the price at 159.00 as upgrade to Warp 4, which I have.
