That sounds really good abwillis.

I'll probably go for the SDL variety.

You're doing a great job, you got some solid reviews up and I love the fact that you post the software with the review. Couldn't be easier.

Keep it up!

I see there is VNC Server with eCS and you can use VNC from eCS as well. What about connecting to Windows desktops, are there any RDP clients?

Regarding Flash, it doesn't matter as much as it used to. I have iPhone, iPad etc. and hardly miss Flash. It's not essential anymore but it is nice to have. Since I'm running eCS on an old Thinkpad T41 I don't use SMP either.

I'll be trying out your suggestions and compile a list of likes/dislikes.

And PMMail/2, it's nice to see it's still being developed but I rarely use mail clients nowadays, GMail is simply good enuff.

..nd to follow up - I do get a dhcp-address at home.

I'm not gonna waste more time on resolving whatever was wrong at work, I'm using eCS at home so I'm perfectly happy.

Applications / Recommended software?

I haven't used OS/2 for "real" for the better part of a decade.

I usually keep tabs on OS/2/eCS development though since operating systems is one of my interests and I stumbled across the BlueNexus website. I already had a license for eCS 1.2/2.0 but I found BlueNexus to be so infectiously curious about OS/2 I decided to get a license for eCS 2.1GA.

So now I have a eCS 2.1GA system and I find myself asking:
What applications are current and recommended today?

My usual host of programs on Mac OS X and/or Windows are:
Firefox (check!)
Java (check!)
Flash (?)
Adobe Reader / Preview on OS X (?)
AIR (for Tweetdeck) - I don't know the status of AIR for OS/2 but maybe there is another recommended Twitter client?
LibreOffice (?)
DropBox (?)
uTorrent / Transmission (?)
Evernote (?)
1Password (?)
Winscp / scp (?)
Putty / ZOC (?, maybe ZOC? I used to use ZOC for OS/2 and have a license for it)
Remote Desktop Connection (?)

I used to use these OS/2 programs:
GammaTech Utilities (horribly out of date?)
ZOC (there is an older version available for OS/2, I still use it on OS X)
Object Desktop Professional
Process Commander (not sure if I just remember getting it or actually using it)
SPM/2
Describe (?, word processor, maybe someone remembers if this was the real name)
MR/2 ICE
CDAD/2
PMMail/2
4OS2
Exceed

So, recommendations?

On second thought, cancel those orders. :)

I just set a hard IP on the interface and that works.

I'm going to take the machine home tonight and try it on my home network to see if I get a dhcp-address there.

Your syntax was close enough to correct:
dhcpstart -d 10 -i lan0
This gives me: DHCP client did not get parameters and Continuing to try in background.

Intiguing. I'm thinking now that although I have a light that I'm connected maybe there is something wrong with the driver for the card?

I get DHCP addresses for all flavors of Windows I've ever tried, Mac OS X 10.4 and up (I haven't tried any olde rversion) and any and all Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD etc. that I have plugged into the network.

In short, I don't think the DHCP server is the problem.

I had this exact same problem with a Thinkpad T60 when eCS 2.1GA was released but thought I'd start over on another Thinkpad because the T60 has a bad rep when it comes to OS/2 support.

I did run mpts and removed the wireless adapter.
I also moved tcp/ip up so tcpbeui became second on the wired adapter.

The wireless is now not involved at all, no driver.
There is no mac-filtering going on on the network.

It is puzzling. :)

Also: ifconfig lan0 brings me:
lan0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,LOOPBRD>
inet 169.254.240.190  netmask 0xffffffff  broadcast 169.254.240.190

lantran.log tells me:

Networking / TCP/IP in eCS 2.1?
2011.06.29, 16:34:57
It's been a long time since I last used OS/2 but now I tried my hand at installing eCS 2.1 on a Thinkpad T41 (2373-tg5). The install works fine, when done and telling it to strat networking automatically I can't ping anything. I get a sendto: No route to host.

This is with a wired connection, it says during startup that it can't load drivers for the wifi so thats a later problem. I have a green light on the wired etehernet port so I have physical connectivity.

Checking TCP/IP configuration it tells med LAN Interface 0 is enabled and should get an address via DHCP.
The DHCP client monitor tells me: DDNS hostanme not registered (normal) and IP address Not Configured (not quite normal). Status: Discovering DHCP servers. Linux/Windows/OS X hosts get addresses just fine via DHCP.
Looking at the Details view in the DHCP Client Monitor tells me:
Sending DISCOVER message.
Number of options requested=6
And it does this with three minute intervals (appx).

I'm probably doing something wrong at a basic level here but need some hints as to what's wrong.

I suspect that is an american Focus which is nothing like the european one. :)

Although I read you're getting the european Focus over there in the future.

So now it's half the price? I sure got told.  ::)

Seems to me you're just making this stuff up as you go along.

The EULA for MAC OS X doesn't allow you to run it on anything but Apple hardware but that is being challenged in a bug way right now: http://www.informationweek.com/news/hardware/mac/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=207801251

At some stations near Trenton, the gas prices is $3.73 per unleaded regular gas. The stations near me in East Windsor New Jersey is $3.69 per unleaded regular gas (for now it is). I fill up the tank about every other week to almost every three weeks.   ;D

Unleaded regular gas (95) in sweden is now 14SEK/liter, that's about 2.33 dollars/liter which makes the gallon price about 9 dollars. My car slurps a smidgen over 1.1 liter per 10 kilometers and I have to fill up the tank very week.
