With difference that you don't boot from the new partition but rather from the eComStation diskette. This could be the key !

I was also able to partially boot directly from the  eComStation CD. So you might not have to actually create diskettes (and boot from diskettes). Booting from diskette images on the cdrom is much faster and more reliable than using real diskettes.

The only problem for me with the approach you suggest is that it requires the destruction of the current system so that a new partition to be created on the SSD. I'd prefer to keep the existing configuration which would mean shrinking the partition in some way.

I also initially wanted to keep the pre-installed partitions. The eCS install did it's LVM-ification thing (assign drive letters) and rebooted a couple times. It even said it found and fixed partition errors. However when actually trying to do  delete/create of partitions using LVM it complained that the partition table was corrupt. Only solution I found was to delete all partitions while booted under Linux so eCS install started with an empty disk.

By the way - I presume you meant to write 1GB not 1MB memory key ??

Yes, you are correct.
It should have been:

1. create Linux USB bootable USB key
need one 2GB key OR two 1GB keys OR one 512MB key and USB cdrom
2. zip copy of eComStation cdrom to USB key (2GB key or 2nd 1GB key)
(also put eCS install key on USB)
** step 2 can be skipped if you have USB cdrom   **

there is another thread on os2world about installing on Eee PC - "Asus EEE PC 701 and eCS". I will probably post any further info there.

It might be easier to use eeeKubuntu to prep Eee PC for the eComStation install

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ubuntu:eeexubuntu:home

download and burn eeeKubuntu ISO

If you have USB cdrom then you can directly boot eeeKubuntu cdrom on Eee PC and use it to delete/create/format partitions on the EeePC. If you do not have USB cdrom you will need to boot the eeeKubuntu on a different machine (that has a IDE cdrom) to create a bootable eeeKubuntu USB key. See web page for how to create bootable USB key

partition the Eee PC SSD device using "fdisk" or "parted" commands

the command to format label the FAT16 partition would be similar to the line below:
sudo mkfs.vfat -n ECS_CDRUN -F 16 /dev/sdXn      (sdXn is partition ID, change as needed)

there are problems accessing USB cdrom during boot. Because of BIOS suport, eCS can use USB cdrom to do initial boot but once eCS drivers load eCS can not see the rest of the cdrom. So you can use USB cdrom instead of diskette images but not to do a complete cdrom install.

I have done eComStation install on Eee PC but have not gotten wired NIC, wireless NIC or sound drivers to work.

Below are some of the steps I used to get the install started:
1. create Linux USB bootable USB key
need one 2GB key OR two 1GB keys OR one 512MB key and USB cdrom
2. zip copy of eComStation cdrom to USB key (2GB key or 2nd 1GB key)
(also put eCS install key on USB)
** step 2 can be skipped if you have USB cdrom   **
3. boot linux with USB key
4. delete all partitions on SSD drive  (use fdisk or gparted)
        ** for steps 4 and 5
** depending on the Linux you use
** you might have to add Linux packages
**  gparted and mdostools (FAT16 filesystem)
5. create 800MB FAT16 partition at end of SSD drive   (use fdisk or gparted)
           label partition "ECS_CDRUN"
4. unzip eCS cdrom zip or copy eCS cdrom to "ECS_CDRUN" partition
5.  and eCS key to "ECS_CDRUN" partition
6. boot eCS using USB diskette drive or using USB cdrom
            "use own boot options"
              a.   change video to VGA

Hmm, I wonder If I made the bootimages into actual floppy disks and attached a floppy drive AND an external CD-Rom drive it might be able to work ... But the floppy drive would probably need to be a 2.88MB one ..

eComStation diskettes work fine with 1.44MB USB diskette drive.

there are problems accessing USB cdrom during boot. Because of BIOS suport, eCS can use USB cdrom to do initial boot but once eCS drivers load eCS can not see the cdrom. So you can use USB cdrom instead of diskette images but not to do complete cdrom install.

I have done it this way.
1. create Linux USB bootable USB key
need one 2MB key OR two 1MB keys OR one 512MB key and USB cdrom
2. zip copy of eComStation cdrom to USB key (2MB key or 2nd 1MB key)

3. boot linux with USB key

5. create 800MB FAT16 partition at end of SSD drive
           label partition "ECS_CDRUN"
4. unzip eCS cdrom zip or copy eCS cdrom to "ECS_CDRUN" partition
5.  and eCS key to "ECS_CDRUN" partition
6. boot eCS using USB diskette drive or using USB cdrom

HP and Dell are now shipping machines with SATA DVD drives. Will we be able to install eComStation?

DVD drives go seriously S-ATA

Bye bye ribbon cable

... excerpt  ...
THE LATEST ESTIMATES out of Taiwan suggest that S-ATA DVD drives will be more popular than standard ATA ones before the year is out.

That's down to the fact that big boys like Dell and HP are starting to ship all their new Vista systems with S-ATA optical drives.

Remote access to company network is only allowed using pptp VPN tunnel through their ms win2000 server. I would like to use my OS/2 system to access the network.

I would like to know what software could be used on OS/2 and instructions on setup.

Need help please.

Hardware / SATA DVD burner drive
2007.05.15, 17:09:22

SATA DVD drives with SATA data interfaces instead of IDE are become pretty common. Lite-On, Sony, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and even ASUS now sell SATA DVD burners.

Anybody use SATA DVD burner drive with eComStation or OS/2?

I know Daniela's S506 ADD driver supports SATA HDD but does it support SATA DVD drives?

Also how about RSJ, can RSJ work with SATA DVD drive?

thanks
