Internet / Unsigned Firefox add-ons
2010.06.19, 05:57:19
Back again-
Some days it is hard to win.

Suspect Adblock Plus was contributing to my earlier problem.  When it is disabled Firefox does not abend -

I uninstalled my add-ons and went out to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox  to get a new copy.

Now - Adblock - and everyother add-on which I selected is shown as 'unsigned' and I can't get my version of Firefox to install any unsigned add-ons.

I've cleared the cache, history and cookies, I've rebooted, etc. etc.and I still have no success.

I did about:config and find no options or overrides for unsigned add-ons there.

In all the years I've been on OS/2 - since 2.1 - this last month has been the most frustrating and difficult.

Hope this 'unsigned' solution is an easy one.  Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks

Need some advice.

I've stuck with Firefox 2.0.0.13 for a long time - it worked.

Now I seem to have mysterious failures and weird results (missing images, flashing screens, strobe light like effects, and abends) which encourage me to upgrade.

I've noticed that most, if not all failures take place after visiting sites which have popups (blocked by adblockplus) or Flash (which I can't view) .  These sites appear to cause the screen to blink and later on I start having more problems and sometimes and eventual abend of Firefox.

When I install a new version (after erasing the old firefox)  Firefox never downloads a screen.  No matter what I point to, I get an immediate "Done" but nothing has downloaded.  So I've not been able to proceed further.

This has happened last Dec., Jan, May and now June - so it is repeatable, but not desirable.

In each case I go back to 2.0.0.13 and it works with the problems already mentioned.

I've tried running in -safe-mode and so far it is more stable -

Sysinfo/2 reports:
Version: OS/2 4.00 US (IBM OS/2 Base Operating System)
Kernel: 14.103a (from WSeB CP#2/Warp 4 CP#2 PostFix)
FixPack: Warp 4 FixPack #15 US (XR0M015)

Where do I go from here?
Thanks

Hope  good news is appropriate.
Had to get off SOYO mobo - 2nd gb of memory wasn't detected and firewire miniDV wasn't working (XP project)

Primary Warp user and tad bit nervous about swapping out mobo and keeping HD with Warp, etc.

Warp  couldn't have gone easier - it booted first time and all I needed to do was swap to Realtek driver and everything worked (of course no miniDV firewire support)

XP?  A nightmare.  Required a install repair (2+ hours) plus fighting AGP software and sound - but miniDV did work.  Consumed most of a day resolving issues.

Just pleased as can be that Warp slipped in so easily -

Gosh - I hope the solar sunspot cycle returns to normal soon, and then maybe my systems would work.

My most recent issue deals with retrieving something as simple as:  www.alderhouse.org/index.html

Right now my system fails to retrieve that page or any page with a similar name length.

If I rename the index.html to, say, a.html it will work

If I rename it to something other than 4, 5 or 6 characters in length, it will work.

If it is left at 4, 5 or 6 characters - it will not work.

The value of the name does not matter - only the length.

What is wrong?  Surely I can't be the only one to which this has happened.  Or am I?

By the way this is on a different ISP - nothing to do with the one which was the subject of my earlier problem.

Running Warp, 4.5 - very inactive system - no maintenance since I upgraded to  VOICE PMmail 3.00.00.0981 (10968),    Apr  7 2008

Suggestions. laughter and criticism all welcome and appreciated.

Internet / tcp/ip isp changes?
2009.09.09, 07:49:15
Maybe it is the weather, or maybe it is the lack of solar flares - I don't know, but suddenly computing isn't fun this week.

Need some advice on why an operational OS/2 system should suddenly lose access to specific websites.  I've been maintaining them for years.

Two in particular are www.oakvilleschools.org   and/or www.oakville-wa.org

The isp admits they had a problem earlier today or yesterday.  It is fixed they say.

On my wife's XP system using the same DSL modem I can access either site.  On my OS/2 system I cannot.  I couldn't this morning before I installed a new firewire card and I can't tonight.  The firewire card is independent of this all, as I had a firewire card installed before, and things worked then.

By the way FTP access fails as well.

I've cleared my history and cache-  the DSL modem was reset.

I can access all manner of other sites - only those on dot5hosting.com give me trouble and I don't know how to solve it at my end.

You folks are my only access to OS/2 help and I appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Dave

Hardware / USB - Firewire conflict?
2009.09.03, 00:03:10
Greetings -

For years I have used my WARP system to download photos from my camera using a card reader (besides me, does anyone recall when cards had 80 columns?) to read my SD card via my USB port, (using  BASEDEV=CWUSBUHC.SYS)  - never have had a problem reading these FAT format devices.

Very recently I added a 1394/Firewire card to process some miniDV tapes (recall 2400 ft reels of tape?)  using XP.  I swap drives to boot XP - nothing shared.  That process worked and I was also able to read photo cards.

Today I went to download a couple hundred photos on my OS/2 system and I'm stuck.  Drive not recognized.  Nothing, zero, zip happens.

I've done nothing to add the firewire under OS/2 - as far as I know it shouldn't see the device at all.

Under XP I can use the USB port and/or the Firewire port - I didn't do anything special there at all.

I've tried different cards,  I've formatted them with XP and also with just the camera (both techniques have worked before) and the result is the same.

I've tried different readers.  No change.

Both cards and readers work on my wife's system - which happens to be XP -

I searched for conflict information and couldn't find any.  Maybe someone out there has some experience they can share to help me out.

I'd sure appreciate it.

Hardware / erratic mouse, SciTech Pro SNAP
2009.01.29, 07:01:17
Almost reluctant to post this, since my last couple of posts seemed stupid in hindsight.

Here goes...

Finally upgraded my video card to an 256 mb Nvidia and boosted my resolution to 1024 X 768 on a flat panel display.  Scitech Snap Pro recognizes the card and monitor correctly.

Now my PS/2 mouse (I've tried two different mice) is erratic.  Most often I'll find it over in the bottom left corner.

I've not changed the mouse timing, or enabled comet corsor or dynamic focus change.  Everything is as it was.

There's a similar discussion in the old forum and mention is made of the free smouse driver (which I have had installed)

This is not a show stopping problem, but it is an irritant.  Has anyone else encountered this and quietly solved it?

Thanks,
Dave

Strange performance problem has just started.

3 websites which I maintain are now difficult and very slow to access with my Warp system.  I have long delays using Firefox, and FTP clients (FireFTP, etc.) have difficulty signing in.

I've not made any software changes.

I have a companion machine, running xp, through the same ethernet converter, thru the same dsl modem and it performs normally.

I can and did swap (removable drives) OS/2 with another XP drive, and using the same exact hardware system  as OS/2 , XP accesses things  normally.

Back on my OS/2 system, all other web sites perform normally.  No performance problems.

What would be a reasonable approach to solving this?  I am stymied.

the three sites are theblackriver.net, oakvilleschools.org, fotloakville.org

Dave

Hardware / Printer - pci troubles
2009.01.13, 02:45:30
Greetings -
Argggh, a long ugly story about a melted motherboard.  I'll skip the udetails.

I replaced the mobo, with another from the same manufacturer - but a different model and chipset.  VIA instead of Intel

All is well except the printer - which now only form feeds and prints one line out of many.  It is the same printer, same cables, same version of Warp that worked before.  About every minute WARP burps and gives me an error message, but other than flashing lights, nothing really prints.

The mobo has a pci/parallel printer port, with the same interrupt level and address as before.  I've set up the BIOS to ECP, etc.

I am "guessing" that a pci-parallel card might produce different results.  If that  a good guess or not?

The same printer, on the same mobo, but under XP, works fine.  I can also attach it to my wife's system and it works fine.

I should mention that the USB ports don't work now, but I am using nonstandard USB code (Chris' USB mass storage kit V1.2) and I expected I might have trouble some day.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

(by the way - since just before Christmas  we've been  through 9 days of being snowed in, flood waters in the house last week - separated by the computer melt down- the new year
has to be better)

Thanks

Need some help understanding how I can get PHP to run on my Warp4 system when retrieved from a network attached storage (NAS) device.

I have a huge collection of photos.  They are assembled by year, by month within year, etc.  The directory structure is two deep, but years broad.

When hosted by the ISP  the  PHP script which retrieves the photos and puts them into a gallery structure for viewing.  No coding is required and the gallery reflects the exact content of the directory at 1, 2 or 3 or more levels.

I want to put the same material on a NAS (backup and accessibility)  and I need a way to process that PHP script on my system.

Perhaps if I'd paid attention over the years I'd know how to do this.  But I don't know how and I could sure use some help.

How do I go about achieving my objective?  Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave Palmer

Applications / PMVIEW capture broke
2008.11.10, 05:19:36
Seems like a dumb topic to post here - but I don't know where to start.

After years of working PMView screen capture stopped working today. :-\

Doesn't matter if it is window capture or part of a screen - in the cross hairs or not - there just isn't a copy collected or displayed.

Other than a Java album package and a PHP script for web development, I've not done any maintenance.  Neither of those touched PMView.

The problem exists over reboots -

Anyone have suggestions on where to start on something like this?

Thanks

I've just had a successful conversion to PMMAIL V3.

I've been a long time PMMAIL user.  Recent ISP changes forced me to either find a new mail package or convert.

I  installed Thunderbird. It worked.  It handled the security needs.   But I was turned off by the cuteness and coloring book appearance of the user interface.  My filters had to be redone, my signature processing would be different and I really didn't like the way address books were handled or the way they are used.  Most of all the it didn't seem to multitask.  Each email I sent required a new task window, and tied up things.  I didn't pursue why that happened.  It was a nuisance.

When PMMAIL V3 GA happened, I was ready to go.  But I have/had an older OS/2 Warp4 system, an outdated kernel and a 16bit stack.

Despite these hindrances, the OS2Voice PMMAIL team really provided support.  They made it possible for me to upgrade and I couldn't be happier.  I'm still sort of back level and still 16bit stack, but PMMAIL really works -

The new version has the same friendly interface and works like a charm.  I was able to keep all my previous mail folders, my filters, and even continue to use my home-grown signature swapping code.

The OS2VOICE team (Doug Bissett and James Moe) deserve kudos!  They're great advocates and supporters of OS/2.

Regards to both, and all,
Dave

Darn, I don't know where to post this or go for more help.

At some point in time I have lost the ability to access either www.bmtmicro.com and/or www.pmview.com

In the first case I wanted to register PMMAIL useage, in the second case I was looking for pmview support.

In both cases my system (Warp4, Firefox) times out and responds with a "taking too long to respond" error message.

I've switched to a different CPU and used my wife's XP and get the same result with Firefox and IE.

The only thing in common between the systems is our DSL (2701HG-D Gateway) with Qwest.

I've posted on the Qwest user pages, with no success.  Other users are able to connect to bmtmicro.

My modem has factory defaults.  The modem firewall is default.  Neither system is on a home network.  Each is simply a wireless connection to the dsl modem.  The XP system uses a Qwest USB modem, and the OS/2 system connects via PCI/Ethernet to a Buffalo AirStation (wireless).

Could I be on a blacklist with them?  How do you solve an issue like this??

Suggestions will be welcomed!!
Thanks
Dave

Setup & Installation / PMMAIL 3.0 Startup
2008.03.22, 02:17:47
This isn't a bug report.  Likely something I've done.  Stupidly.
Decided to download and try the release version of PMMAIL
Take the install options, everything runs, but PMMAIL starts and goes away.
No message.  Nothing.
Anyone else encountered and solved this?
Thanks
Dave.

Hardware / Lan - How to reset?
2008.02.07, 21:32:52
Hello -
I am maybe in over my head.  You can tell me if I am.
Running into problems when Win (98 or XP) tries to share a Buffalo AirStation with me (Warp4).  Both systems use hardwired LAN to talk to the Buffalo, which is wireless to a Qwest 2701HG-D DSL modem.

Sometimes we seem to run into a deadly embrace - other times we don't.  When OS/2 runs by itself, there is never a problem.

But when I get my wife to shut down her system, sometimes I don't get back control.  I am  lan  connected (Davicom DM9 PCI Series Fast Ethernet Adapter) and I can't get online  without rebooting.

Is there a software technique that will let me regain control?

I appreciate any suggestions, tips, etc.
Thanks

I'm a long term, happy :) :) user of OS/2.  Started out on 2.1 on a 386 with 16meg, etc. etc.

Now I am thinking about jumping into the future with eComStation Release 2.0 RC3.

BUT -
I've some old DOS apps that aren't going to be converted, ever - the developers have vanished and others I just want to hold on to.

One in particular uses a DOS - not windows - box to control a light controller for X10 devices.  It uses a com port.  It is online only as and when needed.

Another is a HOBO Boxcar application (remote data collection devices) which is a DOS or can be Windows 3.1 Win98 app.

I've extensive OS/ 2 DB's in old Alpha4 - and again, I'm happy and have no need to migrate to other DBMS.

Again, showing reluctance to change, I've many, many images/mods which entertain me with Siegfried Hanisch's screensaver.  Can I run it on eCS or am I forced to give it up?

Why go to eCS?  Primarily new devices (USB), new display support (when and if needed) and eventually the newer PMMAIL (which I guess isn't really going to work on my pre-Warp 4.5 system).

Any info or broad suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

I am showing my software age and slow conversion to DSL and networks.

Since OS/2 2.1 I've been a dial up user.  Long ago I REM'd out the numerous config.sys statements recommended by many.

DSL finally became available in my rural area.  It easily installed on my wife's XP system.

So now I want to leap into the present and get ethernet support for my DSL modem with Qwest (a USA telco).

I have Warp with:
mpts 5.12 16 bit fixpack
tcp/ip 4.o application fixpak
warp 4 fixpak 15

At a minimum what statements do I need to 'un-REM' to get ethernet support back?

I've searched around and gone back in the archive and I still don't know the answer.

Any pointers or suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards,
Dave

Where I live DSL and cable are not options.

A company provides 2-way satellite access.  The service is called 'Wildblue'

Storage / Rock Ridge mixed case filenames
2007.05.25, 00:52:24
Hello,

I think I should know the answer to this, but....

All along I've use lowercase filenamess  in my webpages and  uploaded to the ISP - and all is well.

After untold backups of data, I'm now dealing with filename compatibility  between OS/2 - files backup on CD - same files restored to OS/2 for use on ISP with Unix.

When I need to recover some files from CD the filenames are all converted to uppercase.  This creates a problem..

My searching reveals that RSJ CD writes various sets of filenames - including all upper case and Rock Ridge (Unix compatible mixed case)

Is there a way to read/accept the lowercase filenames?

My way out is to zip everything - which is workable, but sort of useless on graphics files.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave
