Setup & Installation / eCS inside VMware (seinst problem)
« on: 2008.08.18, 00:40:32 »
Greetings to all.

I know this question has been badgered to /death/, but hear me out first.

I'd like to install eComStation inside VMware Fusion (1.1.3). Normally this would NOT be possible, *however*...

If you specify the following lines in the VMX configuration file:
guestOS = "os2experimental"
monitor_control.vt32 = "TRUE"

Then you can boot OS/2 4.52 or eComStation (as in, the kernel won't bomb out on boot).

I can get into the eCS installer just fine, and configure/setup the system. Upon installation, however, I get the following error:

"Installing the base operating system"
"SEINST install failed"

The log file that the following dialogue (basically stating the install died) points to says:
CID0004: C:\var\cid\SEINST.exe -
C:\var\cid\RSPINST.EXE could not be executed or terminated abnormally
CID0005: C:\var\cid\SEINST.exe -
REMOTE_INSTALL_STATE = '0',
C:\var\cid\SEINST.exe completed with return code 0x1604

If I attempt to launch a commandline here and execute C:\var\cid\RSPINST.EXE, I get the following message:
SYS1804: The system cannot find the file INST32

Interestingly enough, it does NOT say this if I execute S:\CID\EXE\OS2\RSPINST.exe (it throws me into a "OS/2 4.52"-like installer).

The CD is good, I let eCS check it before installing and it checked out.

I can repeat this error every time (so it's not random). Any ideas? I'd really love to get eCS booting inside VMware, and it *does* boot- simply by the fact that I can get into the graphical installer. It just doesn't want to install for some weird reason.

Hardware / Best OS/2 & eComStation Laptop
« on: 2008.05.06, 23:55:40 »
Greetings to all.

I'm looking for a moderately powerful laptop that is supported under OS/2 (4.52- though I'll likely run eCS). Obviously, I'd like to have full ethernet, audio, and video support.

From what I've seen, the T43P seems to be the last OS/2 supported Laptop by IBM (?) with the highest spec.

Can anyone confirm this, or offer any suggestions to what would be the best laptop for OS/2 && eCS these days? While I don't think I'll have to run 4.52, there *is* the possibility, so the system would have to boot it (with a minimum of video & ethernet support- don't care about audio under 4.52) anyways.

Cost isn't an issue. I was thinking around $800, which seems to be around the norm for T43P these days.

Cheerio.
