Thanks for the replies!  I so far (knocking on wood desk) have had no problems with PCPLUS on my current OS/2 Warp 4 setup.  Keep in mind that my machine is a Pentium 120 (not P2 or P3).

I am also considering repurposing one of my Amiga 2000's to be a BBS machine and if I can find a way to do it, run both BBS systems in a heterogeneous manner.  I am looking a DLG Pro for the Amiga and since I am a board member of my local Amiga Users Group, they have asked me to put the "club's bbs" back online if possible.  I am considering doing so and that would at least be a project that has a purpose whereas my other projects serve no other purpose than to keep me entertained :-)

Anyhow, I digress, I appreciate all the help on this topic and indeed I am very happy to see people willing to help.  My goal of course, is to make sure that all my platforms can talk over a serial link to a BBS.  This makes it the ultimate lab IMHO.

Unfortunately, My BBS is down right now (at least as far as public access).  Have been trying to decide if I actually have the time to put it back up and devote.

Yeah, I can remember back in the day too... our hobby (running a BBS) was touted as the only hobby that was almost as expensive as doing model airplanes.... so only model airplanes were more expensive as a hobby!

I am quite proud of my latest Courier acquisition which came from our local Amiga Users Group BBS -- I am an officer of that group currently.   It was one of the "not for resale" Couriers that USR gave to only a few BBS systems as a marketing deal.  You had to have quite a few members to receive one.  It is the original HST model.  They put this in my care just last month.

Thanks guys for the replies.  So far, PCPLUS 2 (which is my fav terminal program) runs fine under OS/2 (it is indeed for DOS) and my Major seems to run fine too.  I am still deciding on updating the BBS and whether or not to do dial up still or not -- do have quite a few modems lying around (all USR Couriers).

Will definitely report back if I do something OS/2 specific.

Greetings:

I am contemplating re-doing my my old BBS machine under OS/2 Warp 4 and I am still kind of a Noob when it comes to the OS itself.

My understanding is that it is 100% compatible to DOS programs (like MS-DOS 6.2x apps), but not necessarily for WIndows (95/98) apps?

The Comm programs that I have for DOS are Procomm Plus 2.0, Qmodem and of course can probably really easily find Telix.   My BBS software is Major BBS or I now have an Amiga alternative for the BBS itself.  SO this project is multi-layered in that I may be moving my actual BBS to the Amiga platform, but still need this old Pentium 100 (Gateway) to run DOS or OS/2 preferably.  It currently has DOS 6.22 and Desqview installed, and of course Major BBS.

So my big question is:  I saw ZOC listed a lot on a Google search, but I am wondering if there is a PCPLUS, Qmodem equivalent for OS/2.  I do have the Windows versions of both PCPLUS 2.0 for Windows (95+) and Qmodem Windows which I believe also was for Win95... but would like to find an OS/2 native program with the ANSI-BBS terminal emulation in it.  Am I right that my Qmodem DOS or PCPLUS 2 DOS will run under OS/2?

Sorry about the OS/2 101 questions, but a person does have to start somewhere.  :-)   My reference books on PC Comms don't seem to cover OS/2 very well at all, they gloss over it, if even to mention that there is existence of what I consider to be very much a "sleeper" OS from the same W95 era.  And naturally, I am learning that I am not the only one who is exploring the OS even now.  That is great.

Thanks for any help and please be very verbose if you offer any technical stuff as I am essentially learning OS/2.

Hope someone can help.

Pete, thanks for that info.  I am not sure how you would incorporate fp15 into your custom cd as well as the updated boot floppies, but the graphics drivers are definitely probably helpful.

If someone here would be willing to offer kind of a step by step of everything I need to do or be willing to make the CD and send the ISO (please PM me on this one).  That would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Greetings:

I am unloading a bit of my older IBM hardware and needed to put OS/2 onto a newer Pentium 3 box I have.  I have a Gateway Pro Series which the installer just locked up on right as you try to read the first install diskette which is from the newer install set at warpdoctor.com.

I am not sure the GW2K does not have some hardware issues and so I am actually donating it away and getting a Gateway E-4200 at some point.  I could use some advice on whether I need to fix the installer or whether I can just get to the 4.5 version and where I might find that CD and install floppies (eg: already slipstreamed with Fp 15).

Advice is welcome.

Thanks,

Mike Needham

@Robert Reed:  So USB support should be enabled with FP 15 on my PL?

Thanks.

Greetings:

I have become quite the IBMer in the past two months.  It started with my passion for vintage computers (like my TRS-80 model 4) and wanting to preserve the BBS culture of which I was involved in as a Sysop.  I am currently working on reviving my old BBS system and in the course of getting some machines to do the job (both IBM PC300 series, 1 PL 6562-86U and the other a GL 6282-58U).  The PL is the one I decided to install OS/2 Warp 4 on and I plan to apply fixpack 15 and the native drivers for the machine in the next few days as I have time.

The questions are:  What is a good terminal program (supporting ANSI-BBS) for OS/2?  Also, the official Lenovo support site where I found the drivers for my machine for OS/2 state that the USB ports are not supported, are there any workarounds or third party drivers for USB?

Also need a good FTP program and the ability to SSH into my *NIX boxes.  I am an avid Linux user and I am hoping I can do alot with OS/2 W4 since it still seems to have development happening.  I am actually also looking for a legit copy of the CD.  I think I found one on Amazon, but really don't think I want to pay $196 for the system, but if that is the going rate, I suppose I will break down and get it soon.

To that end, I want to learn all the ins and outs of the OS, I have ordered a book from Amazon that specifically addresses Warp 4, but wonder what other books I may want in my collection.

Lastly, there are rumours that IBM is thinking about revitalizing OS/2... are these purely rumours or does anyone know for sure?  I have been following the renewal of Amiga OS since they just made Version 4 of AmigaOS a year or so ago... since that was an even more "dead" platform, I would think a redo and modernization of OS/2 would be a good move at this time for IBM.

Anyhow, I digress, Hope someone is willing to be a bit of a mentor for me, just PM me with an email if you are willing to kind of do some hand holding for someone with 21 years in computers who knew DOS pretty well :-)

Otherwise, I welcome answers to my questions and any advice I will gladly accept, even if I don't end up following some of it ;-)

Hope all are having a good day!

Thanks in advance for the help.  Mike

Greetings:

May I first say that I am very impressed with your choice in Forums software :-)  http://www.jmikeneedham.net/forums

I am brand new to OS/2 and installed Warp 3 on my IBM Model 8595 at home just yesterday.  I am looking at putting a BBS system online (again) using OS/2 as the base OS and plan to use it via telnet.

I am currently stuck in the part where my NIC (the Microchannel 3Com 3C523MC) is not being seen by the system and I now have the drivers for the card but need to install them and I am not sure if that is straight forward or not?

Generally, I am a newbie (to OS/2) but an "old hat" in Linux/UNIX, Macintosh and of course DOS/Windows.

I could use a lot of direction and hope that this community will be a good resource.  If you would be willing to help me track down software I need and offer general help, feel free to PM me here or visit my Forums and utilize the OS/2 area of my board and PM me there.

Email me directly via the link on my blog which is http://www.jmikeneedham.net

Hope this community will be a lot of help as I venture into this part of my vintage computing hobby.

Please feel free to interact with me as you will!

Thanks in advance,

Mike Needham
