Setup & Installation / Re: OS2, ECS Boot
« on: 2010.05.28, 03:48:37 »
I just installed ECS 2.0 and it works great.  My problem is this.  I have 2 hard drives.  1 with Windows Vista and the other with ECS.  When both are connected, ECS won't boot.  I get the flashing cursor at the top of the screen.  If I disconnect the Windows hard drive, ECS boots with no problem.  I think that I have seen this problem before.  Both drives are SATA SSDs.

I was thinking about using two SSDs (eCS&Win7) and 1TB hard drive for data.  Have you worked out a solution yet?

If not, try Vista first and eCS second with Air-Boot installed. Then, you don't have to worry about hiding eCS. I like Air-Boot, because you need a partition for it. Just make sure that you never assign a drive letter to eCS from the Windows.

EVFS(GUI) aka The Samba Client is NOT a file sharing software!

Unlike the LAN-Requester, which normally includes IBM Peer, you cannot use the Samba Client to share files.

The Samba Client (which is EVFS + ndpsmb.dll Plugin + Samba Command Line Utilities + EVFSGUI) can only be used to establish connections to Samba (and Windows) Servers.

If you want to share files without LAN-Requester+IBM Peer, you MUST install a (simple) Samba Server on your machine.

The Samba Server WPI package (which does not come with eCS 2.0 AFAIK) can be found at http://svn.netlabs.org/samba.

1) The question was: What happen to EVFS in eCom 2.0 GA, I have eCom 2.0GA installed.

2) It was automatically install before (RCs), now its a sub-option under file and printer sharing (Some people don't use peer).

2a) If you deselect IBM peer it still tries to install NetBIOS over TCP/IP which is very bad to begin with and does not work with Samba server right?

3) I was trying to tell other where it is (it's not even labeled EVFS), and if they miss it, how to install it later.

4) Yes, it is a client, never said it was for sharing, but it is under the file and printer sharing option in eCom 2.0GA now,  some people may miss it like I did.

5) I think it should have been installed automatically. with or without IBM peer networking like before.

6) By the way great work on it, Thank you!

Try Air-boot:

http://air-boot.sourceforge.net/

It's does not need a partition and I have been using it for years without a problems.

Hi Greggory

Sounds like a sensible place to put the EVFSgui option as it is file sharing software.

Regards

Pete

It is a sensible place to put the EVFSgui, but it's not labeled EVFSgui.   It's a sub-option under file and printer sharing, something that I do not use. Also, eCom 2.0 tries to install NetBios over TCPIP, even after I removed file sharing.  This should not be installed if one is going to install a Samba server.

I brought this up just to make sure that others know this before they install their copy on eCom 2.0GA.  Previous RC versions automatically installed EVFS and some may over look this change like I did, or know how it install EVFS afterwords.

I was wondering if I missed something during the install of eCom 2.0 GA, what happen to EVFS and the GUIevfs files?

Greggory

Here is the location on CD#1:

Ok, I reinstalled eCom 2.0 GA on my maintenance partition and left the file printer sharing option ON.  Now the evfs client gets installed. There are two sub-options under the file and printer sharing option. The first option is IBMs file sharing and the second option is Samba GUI client.

I really don't like this, EVFS should automatically be installed with or with out the file & printer sharing.

Well, well,

the biggest uncertainty I'm facing now (and probably lots of other users) is that:
1) I have absolutely no idea how I will get the links and registration: email? my Mensys account? on eComstation.com pages as a software download?
2) I had a Software Subscription but that expired, but now I have my doubts whether I'm still eligible for 2.0 copy,
3) eCS 2.0 GA has been officially released, but I did not receive anything (even on my email) yet, nor have I seen any updates on any pages I would expect to show the download info.

...so regarding the above stated, I'm growing nervous a bit.

Any comments??

My Software Subscription expired too, but received my download link and info from Mensys.  So, I'm pretty sure that you are still eligible. Email Mensys with your info and hopefully you will get your download info the next day like I did.

The install of the OS went well.  Open Office installed just fine too.

On Disk 2 the smart guide would not start and many of the installs would not start.  It seems like it might be something like GCC library or something.  Has anyone had this problem?

I was able to mount and copy data from a Windows Vista machine now which I was not able to do before.

Same thing happen to me, but I used Paul Ratcliffe's ISOFS V1.0.3 to mount the image: http://home.clara.net/orac/os2.htm#isofs

Then the install program worked, this way you don't have to burn the 2nd and 3rd CD

Nice. Btw, is there a light but versatile torrent client like uTorrent for OS/2?
There is cttorrent, and  PM CTorrent Manager if You ask for GUI.

Don't forget about Qbittorrent, a open source client that uses Qt4. qBittorrent v2 is the closest open source (GNU GPL v2 license) equivalent to utorrent.

I did this a long time ago and it was pretty easy to setup, so I know it can be done.   Just make sure that you use two different NiC cards, it will save you from a big headache. Also, I would recommend InJoy firewall.

It works here but we have a slight problem - our add-ons don't work with it.  Now if that could be sorted it would be a good advance on the 3.5.

Get the Nightly Tester Tools add-on and then override compatibility!

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updating_extensions

OR go to menu on Firefox:  Tools => Add-ons => Get Add-ons,  then search for Nightly Tester Tools
