Hardware / Re: LCD Display StandBy
« on: 2008.11.20, 12:31:11 »
I had an ATI X300 in my old system. The DVI interface would not put the monitor to sleep, while the other interface did. ....
<snip>I never did find a way to put it to sleep, using the DVI interface on the X300, using either SNAP, or Panorama (I am using SNAP on the new system - I haven't tried Panorama, yet).
That's why I wrote my own blackout utility.

......It is best to tell the system what monitor is attached, so that it also knows what the monitor is capable of doing. If you attempt to do the settings yourself, you can get it into a setting that the monitor doesn't know about, and then you will have to try to get it working again, without being able to see what you are doing.
It seems to me, that in djcaetano case the 'system' thinks it knows what the monitor is able to handle, but the 'system' is not correct in his case. If it's a fault in the stored data into the monitor or a bug in snap, or a weird combination of switching between DVI and analog or a kvm between...., who knows.

On the other hand if I set the values by my own, I know that I'm correct (after a quick look into the monitors manual). The 'system' will never change settings even if I change monitors, kvms or when power or signal cord  falls out from the monitor or when replacing the monitor when it breaks up. Sure it helps if you have an old CRT or a vnc connection as a last resort if something goes wrong ;)

Of course it's kind of personal attitude to let some 'system' set things up by there own (and get lost if it fails) or to set things up to personal preference.

On thing I want to add - sometimes it makes a difference if there is a monitor connected to the DVI or Analog out at power up. It seems that the graphic chip (X300 in my case) remebers on which output a monitor was attached at power up. Primary and secondary out assignment changes with that. No clue if this matters too on other chips as the X300.

Usually I don't let any OS know which Monitor is connected. I choice default or standard monitor and select the resolution I like. Refresh ratio is set to 60Hz for LCD of course.

If you use DVI output on ATI X300 or built in graphic chip in GEODE processor, probably neither SNAP nor DSSaver will work. In this case you can use my build of blackout (black103) as a last resort.

Setup & Installation / Re: rc5 install

Maybe it helps if you describe what you did so far. Did the Boot-CD start? Have you installed RC5 (first phase) and now it hangs on reboot? Or have you copied this installation from another system?

General Discussion / Re: Theft - Punishment Idea

On Notebooks, and maybe some desktop systems too, you can secure your harddisk with a password. Without that, you can not access it. Drawback - it's not possible to get your data back if you forget the password or the HDD electronics die. Even for professional data recovery companies it not possible/easy to recover.

Anyway, a theft simple put in a new hdd and installs what he/she likes.

Maybe it helps if you post the applications name and error messages too.

There are some Win31 apps which do not work on OS/2 - eCS. I found out years ago that pspice (the now ancient DOS/Win31 version) do not work. Later on I even found in the OS/2 online help, that this application ist mentioned as do not work. There are others mentioned too.

One common problem is with Win32s support in OS/2 which is on level 1.25 where last Win31 version was 1.3x I think. It is possible to install some 1.3 support on top of 1.25 if I remember correctly. Maybe there's a package on hobbes.

Reverting to VGA is only litte work. Simply <ALT><F1> and <F4> I think. I've no idea if video driver is your problem and probably your right on that. But if I were in your situation and someone would suggest me to try it out, I would spend this <2 minutes at least to proof that I'm right.

I did noticed a little script some time ago regarding desktop problems -

/* REXX */
call RxFuncAdd 'SysSetObjectData', 'RexxUtil', 'SysSetObjectData'
rc = SysSetObjectData('C:\Arbeitsoberfläche', 'OBJECTID=<WP_DESKTOP>')
EXIT

No clue if it can change things for you. Or course you have to change C:\Arbeitsoberfläche to your desktop directory.

By the way, do you have more than on Desktop tree? f. i. \Desktop1, \Desktop2...

I tried the /d option ( checkini /d d:\desktop ), but it didn't help. Still can't find the dektop.

I used this option without space but don't know if it matters (checkini /c /DD:\desktop). If a directory tree named desktop on d:\ exists, it worked for me every time.

Programming / Re: Boot Times... does it really matter?
« on: 2008.09.24, 13:41:49 »
I don't either. XP is way faster than eCS to boot and to open things like Firefox, SIM, and OpenOffice.
Don't have any W2k or XP installation on my machines which is faster than OS/2 - eCS on the same machine. Neither boot, nor opening Seamonkey or Star Office. Not sure about OpenOffice cause I rarely use it. Slow starting applications are in most cases a harddisk and harddisk driver and file system issues. For harddisk speed, there's no difference which OS requests data. My Intel and VIA disk controllers perform very well thanks Danis drivers. And using JFS or HPFS386, there's no obvious speed difference even with big applications.

What's fast is with XP is hypernate as Robert pointed out well. I would like to have it for eCS too.  But with 4GB of RAM in my main machine this will probably never work for eCS. Only on the ancient Thinkpad 365 hypernate works out of the box. If there is a step by step instruction anywhere to make it run with eCS1.2 and a R52 (APM), I will test it on my notebook.

Back to the question, yes boot times matters. Unfortunatly eCS sometimes hangs cause of Realteak 8111 network driver, or uniaud or genmac. Or I simply want to try different uniaud versions which needs reboots in between. Or I messed up the WPS with my self programmed xwidget. It would be good if I didn't have to wait 70s but 30s instead. But much more important is a working ACPI and for my next system a graphic driver which supports 1920x1200 or more on DVI with newer cards than the now obsolete X300.

I have now gotten IP and IPX working so I can connet to my netware servers  :)

I had to do a lot of googling but with the help from hobbs and a  howto there on the subject I got it working with the ODI2NDI.0S2 driver.
I've made a quick search on hobbes but don't find the howto. Would you please give me the filename or explain the steps you have to do?

- VNC client
File commander - LarsenCommander, FM/2 (GUI), FC2 (? CLI)
VNC - pmvnc103_ow.zip on hobbes

Hrmm, having trouble tracking down a PM-GUI resource editor. Can you point me in the right direction?
GUI editor is URE, available at hobbes with installation guidlines. There are several versions of dlgedit too. But for this you probably need Iconedit which is on your OS/2 system anyway. And res....cmd, sorry forget the name, to extract und repack resources from and to .exe files. Maybe rc.exe too, but don't know.

Maybe you'll find some interessting infos on edm2.com. Especially in the developer section.

Setup & Installation / Re: Installation won't fix disk

....What puzzles me is that Mensys doesn't make an effort of including a foolproof, failsafe, *comtemporary* Bootmanager into the install process. They made a good progress regarding partitioning during install (if I look back at what it was before... phew) and I bet they just need to get concentrated on this topic to put the right parts together. Well, let's see.
....
I don't know if Airboot is open source or freeware, nor if Win does not deactivate or destroy (W2k < SP2) it. If it is so much better than the IBM one, maybe you should talk to Jan van Wijk about that. If he is convinced about the benefits and will eventually include it in DFSee, I think chances are great, that it can be included in future eCS versions. He probably knows more about partitioning stuff as anyone else in the OS/2-eCS community.

But a lot of eCS users I think, can live perfectly well with the IBM boot manager. And as with many other eCS related topics - too less people to work on solutions.

I simply cannot understand why people are -today,2008!!- still using the IBM BootManager ......

I you really want to understand why I use the IBM boot manger - it simply works on my machines. With DOS, Win (98, 2k and XP), OS/2, eCS and Linux. And DFSee can even install it and manage it's options. Till now, no reasons to try out another one.

Hardware phone which works with skype? I've nerver seen such a thing.

I've an old POTS but do not want that she have to pay the high prices for calls from Russia (where my doughter studies for the next months) to Austria where I live. She has internet, a WinXP notebook and skype installed. But I don't want to boot Win only to talk to her. I can chat (PSI) and of course email from eCS. But would be nice if I can talk too.
