One new tool that is the pipeline is tool that cleans out dead wood out of your INI files automaticly (please note this being developed and tested by people that know what they are doing!). As some people might be not happy if there INI files are kept clean automaticly. You will also be able to turn off this feature!
...

At last!

That is something that has been missing from OS/2 based systems since the beginning.

I'm looking forward to not having to remember to run checkinin and cleanini every few weeks  :-)

Regards

Pete

Same here, Pete!

I was looking forward to the new version of Unimaint that Jim Read was working on, but I was sad to learn that Fate was unkind to him; I sincerely hope that he is doing well.

But this is the next best thing WRT OS/2 and INI files, for while I have the cleansing process simplified and smooth after all of these years, I'd much rather not bother with it at all.

R.K. and this new thrust, gets my vote!! (I mean a real vote, not like the fake, political vote, pretending to get a choice between two pre-approved, stinkin'-rich, self-serving, candidates, both painted from the same can of sh*t, and sharing blood.).   :o

Down with Corrupt-and-bloated INIs!!!!

Heheh.

Are you saying you have a BA/2000 autoloader license? I need one of those to run my HP DLT 818 from OS/2.

What we need is a port of mtx (and then a nice WPS GUI interface).

What I'm saying is that...

... in times of distress... (or as the "honourable", cigar-smokin', drag-queen, politicians say... "in times of 'dis dress"),

... that the...

Alex,

Thanks again for the detailed instructions; It made things quite easy.

In short, I tried it and it works so far. I have not tried to back anything up, but all indications are that it will work.

I have to try and find out what is presently on the tapes that I have been given. There should be some navigational charts... that I can use. But I have not been able to find a means to list files... yet. Is that even possible?

If, in the end, I can not do that, then I'll just erase them and go from there.

Just a little bit of feedback.

Tnx for the good info, Alt, I appreciate it.

I'll have a go at that over the next few days and afterwards, I'll post the results.

I have Back Again /2000 installed; It does not recognize the drive...

I do have all necessary licenses installed... including for the Tape Autoloader... though I'm not sure that's applicable here.

Quote from: ALT on 2012.02.06, 10:13:40It's possible for mere mortals to piece together a working setup but it takes a lot of back-and-forth reading of multiple documents, careful experimentation, and swearing.  (That said, I wrote some simplified instructions way back which I can provide if needed.  I was working on turning them into a VOICE article before the newsletter went comatose.)

I'll give that a try, thank-you, if you can "provide" those instructions.  :)

Hardware / Tape Drive & Config.sys
2012.02.03, 16:27:55

I recently had a number of SCSI tape drives given to me.

My SCSI card recognizes my test unit and the Hardware Manager shows it and provided the expected data.

Nothing shows up in my Drives Folder however.

I am unfamiliar with Tape Drives, but distant memory from reading past news groups, tells me that a device driver is required... I don't know if such a driver would be brand-name specific or not.

I did a Google Search on OS/2, Tape Drive & Config.sys, yet nothing shows up of value.

I don't know if it matters, but I'm using an Exabyte drive, internal.

Does anyone here have a working SCSI Tape Drive and some information on the Config.sys necessaries?

Any help would be appreciated.

Personally, the reasons that I use OS/2 are its ease of use, its functionality, and, (here are the relevant bits), it's ability to operate independently, (and other related privacy concerns), and it's total lack of nagware of any sort. I don't need reminders. I'm not a child. I had enough of that sh*t when I was a child. One of the benefits of being an adult male is that I do not have to tolerate those intrusions any more. Constant, redundant password requests fall into this category. They are ridiculous, inane, needless, redundant, easily fixed and stink of Operant Conditioning, (don't know what that is? You should. It's used on you every day).

And good riddance to it all. May it, (as a whole), never infect good, ol', OS/2.

Some may disagree and say otherwise. However, being reminded of new updates is nag, nag, nag!ware as far as I'm concerned and anyone that says otherwise has modified the meaning of the word in their own mind to accept the otherwise unacceptable; They are weak. Soft. Malleable. If I want/need an update, I'll look for it and install it myself. For updates and bug fixes are always a double-edged sword; It can save you, and it can wound you.

Also, if an installer splays bits and pieces of a product all over the system in a way that I cannot quickly and easily, find it and remove it, (or whatever), then that's a step towards Windows and Windows is metaphorical, xeno-estrogen-laced junkfood; For the simple-minded and weak; Not for me!

Now as options there have been a number of installers for OS/2. I cannot say if they will suite the purposes of the porters/programmers, for I am neither. What I can do though, is list some of the ones known to me.

I shall do so now:

  • IBM Installer
  • GenInstaller
  • Others
  • WarpIn - (already dealt with, but here it is again)
  • ZIP file

Barring any workable auto-installer there is the "ZIP file option"; Simply dump it all in one directory and add the necessaries to the PATH statement(s). Not ideal, but there is only one significant problem that I can see; PATH statement enlargement. (Porn addicts: Don't confuse with the penis enlargement; They are not the same).

By "Others" there are lesser installers out there that have been used by OS/2 software companies over the years. I don't know if any of them are appropriate for any-or-all cases where installers are an issue, or if the source(s) is(are) even available. But ex-OS/2 software programmers have been known to be tracked down from time to time and thus, remain a consideration where no easy solution has been forth coming.

I know some of this has been covered before, but here I present it encapsulated, in one neatly wrapped package, not unlike an Xmas present, or for the children amongst you, in one big-and-swollen, gelatinous, teat for you to suck on, with pre-enlarged aureoles complete with elongated and pre-warmed, nipple!

That's my spiel for today.

Now I must go and kick the cat.

MEERRRROOOOWWW!!!! :o

That's it! I'm gone...

I mean, everybody knows, that's not how you connect your mouse to your computer!

Doh!! ;D

You plug in the end that has the wire, (tail)! 8)

Personally, I prefer to use the keyboard myself... hehe

I agree with you Ian... to a certain degree...

I do not have any problem with someone showing a little bit of personality every now and again, (or more often than that), else we'll all slip into the psychopathic style, that is rammed down our throats by every TV news reader out there, devoid of all emotion and caring and epitomizing the robotic-dead image that those that make TV have forced us to all emulate; a docile, take-all-without-a-word, drone.

Emotions are, after all, the thing that makes us human and empowers our lives. Else we might as well be robots... as life slips into a somnambulant state somewhere between sleep and death. (Look around you).

And there are always the insufferable idiots that I personally, refuse to suffer... and don't! 8)   Fortunately, there are none around today.  ;)

Also, I'm willing to bet that many of the ruffled-feather threads that so very, rarely, pop-up here, infuse a little life into the readers and get the very-much-needed blood pumping into the membership of an arena that is notorious for being desperately, sedentary. And of course, when such threads are active, the hit count goes up as they keep coming back for more!! :D

Yes, yes, I know, some are repelled, but for every one repelled, ten will increase the frequency of their visits, throughout the life of the thread.

Having said that, I come full circle and say that and some level of a sophisticated maturity and control must be shown and over most, (if not overall), present.

GAWDAMNIT!!!!

Networking / InJoy Firewall... Dead?
2012.01.10, 15:36:14

It has been a very long time since I've heard anything from the InJoy Firewall people... and their mailing list has been dead so long that I unsubscribed a while back.

... And their website hasn't been up dated in years.

Is the InJoy Firewall project still alive?

It would be a crime for it to have gone the way of the Dodo.  :(

Here's a copy of my inetcfg.ini file.

We're talking 98 technology here; It is hardly likely to be worth the effort to sell and the shipping costs for this monster would be prohibitive.

It is probably worth more to me for the power supplies and SCSI boards/devices, etc. Even the drives are only 4.5G, albeit in a RAID configuration. So it wouldn't even be a good server, any modern-day, off-the-shelf computer being superior.

It does have Digital Unix installed on it, but I do not have the name/password so I cannot even test it out, though it will boot to the logon window, devoid of serious errors.

Ah well... the fans will keep me cool on those hot days to come! Hehehe...
